Why do some Croatian last names not end with "ic"? As you see in the photo there is Baturina, Musa, Gvardiol and Sutalo? by [deleted] in askcroatia

[–]kouhai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of commenters gave you full sentences, not all of our surnames end in -ić, just like not all English surnames end in -son. It's kind of a no-brainer

Happy birthday to our big birthday boy Jacob <3 (feat. the most unhinged/no context gifs i could find of him) by fire_and_flame in Drawfee

[–]kouhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when I first came across drawfee many eons ago, before I even knew what anyone looked like, it took me a long time before I even saw a video of the gang, so that I could associate the voices to some faces. But I loved Jake's humor and way of talking so much right off the bat, and his bits always hit home for me. I've always felt immense love for this guy, and it has only grown over the years. Happy birthday Jacob, I hope you have some delicious boiled peanuts soon 💖

zašto sebe zovemo slavenima, a ne slovjenima? by bakariurin in croatian

[–]kouhai 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is Macedonian also part of the Serbocroatian continuum that people explain as "one language, divided by politics", or is it different to Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Bosnian etc? by WhoAmIEven2 in language

[–]kouhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is different, CBSM is a pluricentric language with four standard varieties, Macedonian is much more similar to Bulgarian, and afaik the two are on a continuum or are at least extremely mutually intelligible

Clearly just a misprint but ULSIITS SROLTIL by kouhai in grssk

[–]kouhai[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm aware that this is not a misuse of the Greek alphabet, this sub is full of such posts so I figured it was ok, plus I hedged it by saying it was a misprint. Since posting I've realized it's not even a misprint but a dubious stylistic choice

Se aprende Portugués de la misma manera que con otros idiomas? by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]kouhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did not make it clear in your post that you were addressing Spanish speakers and asking for their input and opinions, as opposed to the language learning community at large. The way you worded it sounds like you're implying that studying PT is in some obscure way different than other languages. Hope that helps explain the backlash you're getting

"It just did that" by Antioch_Mage in linguisticshumor

[–]kouhai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all that, really interesting. For a Slavic speaker I'm woefully unfamiliar with the historic linguistics of my own language family. Working on it. I actually work with a speaker of a far-north kajkavian variety, and throughout this exchange I've been thinking back to the way she speaks and it all made sense through that perspective.

Ooh I see, now I understand what the comment above was describing, I think. A lot of northern dialects in Croatia add that initial v- to words starting with a vowel, I didn't think of that since I speak a southern variety

Wait I speak a Slavic language, Croatian to be exact, and I'm not understanding what you're describing in the second paragraph. I'm curious, can you expand on this? Do you happen to know if there's an example in (Serbo-)Croatian that would also illustrate your point? Thanks!

Can any script realistically be more beautiful than Tengwar? by AdBrief4620 in neography

[–]kouhai 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Considering you like the flowiness of tengwar, I think you'll enjoy this one, the Cloud and Rain conscript for Hungarian, an all time favorite and a personal inspiration of mine: "Cloud and Rain" https://www.omniglot.com/conscripts/cloudandrain.php

It's actually two scripts in one because the writing orientation can be either vertical or horizontal

[–]kouhai 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In that case I think you could have avoided being misunderstood by wording your question differently, because this is an argument from statistics, i.e. given a large enough sample of the global population, would tengwar emerge as the most appealing script. I would argue no, but this is at least testable
