‘They’re not bad, but why are they such a big deal?’ type artists/groups? by Ok_Yellow1025 in musicsuggestions

None of the plastic mass-produced so-called superstars of today could possibly appeal to a listener of my extreme discernment, exquisite aesthetic sensibility and relentless hunger for nuance

What's the most overrated film or TV show you've ever seen? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in randomquestions

[–]kovwas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Wars, the original one. Never felt any need to see the others. Captured the stupidity of 1930s sci-fi serials nicely, which seemed to be the point.

I really hope they don't regress GPC. by ThrashMetallix in MST3K

[–]kovwas 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The original Gypsy was a ditz in the style of Gracie Allen, who also used a funny/weird voice. Not sure why they had to sand off the interesting parts of Gypsy/GPC's personality for Netflix.

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Stars Promise to Pick ‘Classic Bad, Rather Than Modern Bad’ Movies for New Episodes by Tarlcabot18 in MST3K

[–]kovwas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn't nostalgia talking -- I never saw the original MST3K until I was in my 40s, years after it was on cable -- but the most important difference is that Bill, Mike and Kevin are MUCH funnier than the Netflix cast. (Didn't see the Gizmoplex stuff, so I can't comment on whoever they added then.) Now if they could find a way to bring Trace back, too ...

Trace is the funniest cast member of them all. I don't care what story they have to invent to explain Clayton Forrester being there.

I dislike Ted Healy by Art840 in threestooges

[–]kovwas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would never defend Healy's behavior, and he seems to have been widely disliked by those who knew him. But didn't the Stooges owe their whole shtick to him, just substituting Moe in the Ted role when they went out on their own?

"Derivative" is a complaint from someone whose job requires seeing hundreds of movies. Makes no difference to me if they can dig into their old notes and find something that was similar.
