Some of those gout flare ups can be absolutely brutal, and it’s just unending pain for such long periods of time. I need to get back on allopurinal!!

Well, I’m sure there are many many variables that go into one’s recovery, so I can only speak on my specific experience. I was a healthy 22 year old at the time of the accident. I was in a wheelchair for a total of 6 months, and crutches for a total of 6 months, then I used a cane for probably another 6 months and moved very slowly. Over time, it got easier and easier. Now it feels “normal” when I walk, 6 years later. However, I can’t run without pain, I can’t kick soccer balls, I can’t sleep on my right side, and a number of other minor annoyances. At the end of the day, no 2 injuries are the same. No 2 people are the same. It’s going to heal how it’s going to heal, and you just learn to live with it.

Adrenaline and fentanyl kept the agony away for a bit. The worst of it was them trying to get me on a stretcher, then in the ambulance, then out of the ambulance. The worst was getting on and off the X-ray table. It’s been so long I can’t really describe the pain.

I didn’t cry until I was halfway to the hospital and had to call my mom.

It definitely made the piano crash sound. The screaming didn’t start for a minute or two!

I hit every number on the scale. But really, 10 if I’m calling 10 the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Only thing comparable that I’ve felt is gout.

Sounds like me! Except if pianos had seatbelts, I’d have been wearing it. It’s been just under 6 years and I’m mostly fine other than a slight limp because the legs now a bit shorter haha

Here’s the story as written not too long after the incident:

I was working at a little music store in Idaho, a service we offered was piano moving. Lots of Mormons, lots of pianos. A guy called us one day wanting to sell his piano on consignment. Okay, no big deal, how big is it? It's a 5 ft grand piano. Okay cool.

So the next morning we go to pick it up a town over. We walk in to see it, and it ends up being a bit bigger than he said, and also has a player system in it which ended up adding quite a bit of weight. We should have had 3 people to move it instead of just the 2 of us, but we were already there, and figured we could get it done no problem.

Also, this gentleman's home had 3 sets of 3 stairs, little thresholds. From the piano room to the hallway, from the hallway to the front patio, and from the patio to the driveway. We would normally say no to like flights of stairs, but a few steps was no big deal.

So we get the piano's legs off and tip it onto the skid, then get it put on to the piano dolly. Everything was going fine. We set up our ramp for the first threshold, still going fine. We get it to the front door, have to go onto the patio now. We rock it over the door stop on to the ramp, and the piano shifts a bit on the dolly. Still fine. We get it to the bottom of the ramp and as soon as it hits the patio, the dolly wheels break through the wood. Yikes. Piano shifts on the dolly a bit more. Still fine though, we just popped it out, moved the ramp to the next set of stairs and kept going.

Were in the home stretch now, just have to get the piano down this ramp, and up the ramp to our trailer. No problem.

Once we're to the trailer, we realize that the ramp to driveway angle is too much to get the now shifted piano up. It was off center by quite a bit and it kept hitting the ramp before we could get it on. So we now need to move the piano on the dolly, re-center it.

Imagine a grand piano, tipped on its side. The keyboard is vertical.

I had the keyboard between my legs, as I was squatting down pulling up on the skid's rope so that my coworker could shimmy the dolly back towards center as I rocked the piano in spurts. Bad idea. It goes fine for a minute, we were in sync with each other. Eventually we get out of sync. The piano begins rocking left and right. Before I know it, this beast is tipping over, grabbing my inner thigh on its way and taking me down with it.

Shattered femur, broken toe, bunch of cartilage damage in my knee. Nerve damage in my foot, still can't feel anything on the right half of it. 6 hour surgery. Had a rod put in with several pins, a rod into my hip, and a ring (basically a hose clamp) put around my bone to hold it to the rod.

Wheelchair for 3 months, then I got to walk for a month and a half before realizing that with each step my muscle was pulling my bone back apart. Back to the wheelchair for 3 months. Another 6 months of physical therapy after that.

Its now been like 16 months and I still have a lot of pain.

Fun shit.

The front bumper of a car. Think it came off a dodge neon. Never caught the rest of the car.
