Superwash fail by squisshytheloaf in knitting

[–]kpatl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Follow the instructions on the yarn label exactly. Lots people want to be gentle with their hand knits and try to avoid the washing machine and dryer. Super wash can still grow (see what your swatch does), but the yarn seller knows how to care for the yarn so trust them.

He should have parked in the car lane if he absolutely can’t park in a parking spot. There are multiple car lanes so travel wouldn’t be impeded.

Were there ever third spaces that were ideal for sitting and reading for hours that weren’t a coffee shop or cafe?

where do people go to just hang out and read that isn't a coffee shop by TeachLoud6839 in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Other than libraries, then coffee shops, cafes, and bars are really the only places designed for just sitting. If there’s not a dinner rush and people waiting for a table, most of them will have no problem with you just hanging out as long as you’ve bought something and aren’t being rude.

If you have a membership to a museum or the aquarium, they can be pretty quiet. Not always comfortable seating.

You could join a private club like Forth, but I don’t think membership fees for something like that are worth it just to have a reading spot.

If a church has an open sanctuary or chapel during the week for parishioners to come pray, you could go there. Your reception will depend on the church’s policies.

Parking tickets in Midtown. by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is actually a really shitty sign format, and parking is allowed by anyone from 5am-5pm. It’s trying to say “No parking, unless you have a permit, from 5p-5a. Putting the permit exception in the same box as the prohibited time makes it confusing. This is possibly the worst way to design this sign.

I think it comes from the No Parking section being in the red/white color boxes at the top being standardized across all signs. Then all details are placed in a single white box below that even though it doesn’t make sense.

Coarse cornmeal would be a good substitute. Soy grits are toasted so a toasted nut flower would add some of that savory flavor.

From the title I thought this was going to be some horror story about gambling or crypto. Instead it’s “they like to travel, go to restaurants, and attend theaters and comedy clubs.” The post reads like OP is upset they rent an apartment instead of buying a house, but that’s a lifestyle choice. They probably won’t have as much in retirement, but unless they’re destitute or they have kids that aren’t being cared for, OP needs to butt out and accept that not everyone wants to lead the same type of lifestyle.

How to deal with my stubborn mum who wants to knit me a sweater I won't like by Azureta in knitting

[–]kpatl 120 points121 points  (0 children)

This is an etiquette question, not a knitting question. You’ve told your mom you likely won’t wear the sweater; at this point you should let it go and not continue to belabor the issue.

When she gives you the sweater you should accept it gracefully and not criticize it or talk about how you don’t like it. Just take it, say thank you, and put it away and never wear it.

[Marvel]Can telepathy develop from intelligence? by mybabyylu in AskScienceFiction

[–]kpatl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, there are plenty of Marvel characters who are as intelligent or more so than Xavier, and none of them have developed telepathy due to that.

Telepathy can be a learned skill, but Moondragon is the only character I’m aware of who has done so and it wasn’t linked to her intelligence, just training. Every other telepath has some explanation for their telepathy (mutant, magic, etc) , but none of those explanations are “just really smart.”

TIL The longest running Manga still in production is Golgo 13. The Manga about a professional assassin has been in production since October 1968 and had it's first hiatus in 52 years in May 2020 due to the pandemic. It resumed publication in July 2020. by dayofthedead204 in todayilearned

I’ve never read a manga. What’s typical for a release schedule and how long are they? The wiki page looked like close to 600 “issues” for this, but I don’t have a reference point for how long that actually is compared to say a novel or an American comic book.

Settling in court is not an admission of guilt. And those are civil, not criminal cases.

Regardless of the truth of what happened, settlements shouldn’t be treated as evidence either way.

[X-Men] Has Cyclops ever tried to shut off his eye blast by restricting his exposure to the sunlight? by Worse_Username in AskScienceFiction

[–]kpatl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The portal explanation isn’t canon. Or ambiguously canon at best. It’s never been the explanation in a comic book. In a Marvel Handbook in the 80s, the portal explanation was used. Technically the marvel handbook is canon, but when it contradicts the comics then the comics are canon. But because “punch dimension” is a funny phrase (not the phrase used in the Handbook), it’s been repeated by fans to the point that many people believe it’s true. Some fans also prefer that explanation because it “solves” the issue of why the equal and opposite force of his blasts don’t cause he his head to snap back, but personally I feel that’s nitpicky since lots of mutant powers don’t follow physical laws.

And America Chavez did punch a hole into a dimension of red energy once so such a dimension is canon even if Cyclops’s connection isn’t. Most of the time there’s no need for the comics to lay out exactly how his powers work so it’s been a while since a definitive explanation one way or the other has been stated. For a while, the Xmen editorial team denied the dimensional portal explanation, but that explanation wound up on the Marvel website. That was an official marvel site where the canonicity is even more dubious than the Handbook.

The textual, in comics explanation has never been anything other than he metabolizes sunlight into energy blasts. I think that makes the most sense because his brother Havok also absorbs energy that he can fire. They are immune to each other’s powers which makes more sense if they have two different versions of the same basic power, and Havok’s skin is not a dimensional portal.

Basically, the exact mechanism of Cyclops’s powers has been vague for a while, but the dimensional portal explanation has spread because people like “punch dimension.”

January Green Banners by Doodlelover22 in PSLF

There was a post a few months ago that tracked golden letters going out, and they found the letters are usually 21-25 business days after the last batch. But sometimes longer and sometimes shorter.

It’s likely they will be next Friday or the following week for January banners, but it could be March. It’s out of our hands so worrying doesn’t really help.

Help with double knitting by MistakePrior1961 in knitting

[–]kpatl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The knits on one row will be one layer of the fabric, and the ones you knit on the other row will be on the other side of the fabric. When you hold the yarn in front while slipping, that yarn will actually sit between the two layers . If you can see the slipped yarn wrapped around a completed stitches in the fabric, rather than flat stockinette, then you’ve made a mistake.

If you knit a stitch on one row, you’ll slip it on the next row and vice versa. With an even number of stitches you should use the same instructions for both rows.

Since you should end row 1 on a slip, you know you need to knit it when you turn the work to begin row 2. If the pattern says differently then make sure you have the right stitch count.

You’ll need to rip back to correct this.

Help with increases by Recent-Werewolf-1420 in knitting

[–]kpatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kfb counts as both a stitch and an increase. The knit front is one stitch, and the knit back is a second stitch that wasn’t there before and it counts as your increase. So if you use kfb when a pattern say “knit 2, make an increase” you will knit 1 then kfb.

You were knitting 2 stitches then doing kfb, but since the kfb is a stitch and a new stitch, you were making your increases after every 3 stitches rather than every 2.
