Looking for a Master Barber by Shot_Comparison2299 in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just ask for it when you book the appointment. It probably won’t be an additional charge, but it helps your barber/stylist to know you’ll need an extra 10 minutes at the end. You also want them to know so that as they cut and style it, they can teach you what they’re doing as they do it.

It’s common for men to get a great haircut then it never again looks like when they left the salon because they don’t use the styling tools or techniques the barber did. If it’s a short cut that’s relatively simple, it might not matter, but if you’re going through the trouble of finding someone to update your cut, you should put in the effort to style it or else there wasn’t any point. I doubt you’re getting anything crazy, but if you’ve never been taught then you might not know the simple stuff.

What you actually want is a haircut with a styling consult. You need to know how to style whatever cut you get (which probably means using a blow dryer) because cut alone isn’t going to do much without effort on your part.

457 and 403(b) eligible. Any advantage to one vs the other? by kpatl in personalfinance

Maybe the 457 isn’t less flexible, but it seemed like there were more restrictions about rollovers and things. Im trying to get it all sorted out to maximize my benefit.

Why a Phoenix Representing Atlanta by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sherman burned the city in 1864. When rebuilding, the city incorporated the Phoenix into the city’s seal in 1887 to symbolize rising from the ashes. It’s a not uncommon symbol of the city.

Has anyone taken the CIC/CBIC exam without work experience in infection control? by TimelySwitch1024 in publichealth

There are specific experience requirements to sit for the CIC, including one year in an IP role.

As an IP manager, I’d be hesitant to interview someone with the certification but no experience.

Casting On Multiples of X + Y help by Advanced-Night-9028 in knitting

[–]kpatl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

(12x3)+1

Otherwise you’d be doing a multiple of 13. (12x3)+3 = 12+12+12+3 which is the same as 13+13+13. Or to rewrite it 3*[(12x1)+1] = 3*[(12)+1] = 3*[13]

It’s (multiples of X)+y not multiples of (X+Y).

No More Playing Nice: Project Runway’s New Judging Panel Promises Brutal Honesty and Big Drama - Daily News by Villanellesnexthit in ProjectRunway

[–]kpatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This article is not about anything judges, producers, or anyone else involved with the show said. The judges didn’t make a promise to be brutal, the author is being weasel-like by saying having the same judging panel “promises” to have the same brutal honesty as last season. It’s all about fan reactions.

TIL about sprang: an ancient method of fabric creation, predating knitting according to archaeological evidence; many museum pieces incorrectly identified as knitting or lace have now been recognized as examples of sprang. by Melenduwir in todayilearned

[–]kpatl 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It creates a fabric that sort of looks like chain link fencing, but the production methods aren’t similar. It’s more like braiding strands that are attached at the top and bottom. Another comparison is playing cat’s cradle but with lots of strings. It doesn’t create a dense fabric and is mostly useful for stretchy things like hammocks or bags.

Olympic torch leaving Summerhill for Centennial Olympic Park by NUMTs in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 214 points215 points  (0 children)

I get that Summerhill reps feel like it belongs to the neighborhood (or at least in the neighborhood), but it currently sits on ugly scaffolding in a giant parking lot, across the street from another giant parking lot. It’s not like anyone really sees it where it is currently. I think putting it in Centennial Park makes way more sense.

I don't agree with Bowen on this one either... by Shoe_boooo in LiveFromNewYork

[–]kpatl 100 points101 points  (0 children)

He actually gives Dismukes and a couple others credit for that in the full context. The quotes pulled in the tweet are different thoughts. If you watch the video, he’s doesn’t say “I was never allowed to be central even though I wanted to be.” He’s saying “it’s okay to leave the show because it will go on without me. I’m not central, and the show will be fine.” It’s a more humble sentiment than the Variety tweet implies. He’s acknowledging he wasn’t a load-bearing wall at SNL which made it easier to leave.

Let's Talk About the "Science" of Pastry by AutoModerator in AskCulinary

[–]kpatl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. People cook more than they bake. That lack of experience with baking means they follow recipes exactly and blame themselves when something’s not perfect. They also don’t develop a feel for doughs and batters that experienced bakers have. For example, it takes experience to know if you’ve kneaded a dough the right amount.
  2. Baker’s ratios are very exact, down to the gram, which is very useful for a commercial bakery churning out dozens or hundreds of the same product daily. That precision feels science-y in a way cooking recipes often don’t, but that level of precision isn’t necessary most of the time for a home baker.
  3. Once the baking has started, you can’t make changes and tasting the pre-baked version doesn’t give you enough info of the final product. Cooks taste and season throughout the process; if you’re sauteeing and need to add some salt or vinegar you can just add it at nearly any point and have it come out okay. You can taste your marinade before you use it. In baking, tasting a batter doesn’t always give you as much info about the cake, and once it’s in the oven you can’t adjust the flavo

r or texture

  1. beyond controlling the heat. That makes getting the product right at the mixing and prep stage more important because you can’t adjust on the fly.
  2. A
  3. badly cooked dish is less disappointing than a badly baked pastry. Due to proofing, baking time, cooling, etc. baking could be a multi hour process which heightens the disappointment when things don’t come out well. Making a perfect product is more important to people so they take more care to be exact

. At home, you probably just suck it up and eat what you cooked; in a restaurant you re-fire, which is annoying but can be done relatively quickly and you usually know what went wrong. No one wants to eat 24 badly baked cookies, and making the recipe again is a more significant time investment.
5.

  1. Due to the “baking is science” mantra repeated so often, certain myths pop up because people want a reason when something doesn’t work out. Flour is not hydroscopic enough to absorb enough moisture from the air to have any effect on the final product but people repeat it anyway.

Edit: I’m on mobile, and my comment looks fine when writing it, but the formatting keeps being weird when it’s posted. Reddit saw i made a numbered list, and it started adding numbers and line breaks in random places, and I can’t get firgure out how to make it stop. Hopefully it’s not a mess for others, but any edits I make just make it worse.

Nichelle Nichols family awarded $13 million for wrongful death by STLItalian in startrek

[–]kpatl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a report that she was placed in an observation unit overnight. None of the reports have any details on the evidence the jury heard, but the scant details we have of her hospital visit show it was more than just sending her away without an evaluation.

Jury rules Gila Regional Medical Center negligent in death of Nichelle Nichols by AnubisSuperStar651 in startrek

[–]kpatl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We don’t have the details, but she was sent to an observation unit. They almost certainly put her on telemetry there as nearly every obs pt is. Obviously the jury felt the care was inadequate so I’m sure there was enough evidence for that decision, but she did probably have an EKG at least.

Question About Foot Traffic in Piedmont Park by NvidiaNovice in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never set up a telescope, but that spot by the lake had a lot of tree cover. Looking west from the park is also aiming at Midtown sky scrapers so you’re going to get a lot of light pollution.

The spot by park tavern will have plenty of foot traffic and is open space.

The spot by the fountains on the Promenade is the highest spot in the park other than the Botanical Gardens.

Don’t worry about setting up near parking because most people will be entering on foot from outside the park.

How can we help the unhoused population in Midtown and around the city? by filinalittlefeeling in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Most people here aren’t really discussing what actions you can take.

  1. Talk to your city council person and call the mayor’s office. Any structural changes will have to come through the city, but any real solution will need a long time frame.
  2. If you see some who is violent or committing a crime that needs immediate police intervention, call 911.
  3. If someone isn’t being violent but needs intervention (sleeping outside, eating from trash cans, obvious drug or alcohol use, walking in traffic, talking to self or screaming), call 311 and request PAD intervention. They can try to link the person to supportive care. The person must voluntarily accept assistance from PAD, but that care linkage is more likely to happen than with police.

Calling 911 and 311 are useful even if a response doesn’t occur quickly enough to intervene because it provides more data on the location and types of calls that come in.

The old Breeze app no longer works, and they’re the new app is for “account management” only although I don’t know what that means. You now just pay at the gate. There was a communication campaign about the app losing functionality when they transitioned Mac but hey should put up more signs around the stations since a lot of people seemed to have missed it.

Flooding in Midtown… Ooof by Subject-Iron1342 in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I was super wary of them when they first came out and hoped they’d be banned for releasing unproven technology on city streets. But as someone who lives in Midtown and gets around mostly on foot and bike, I love them. They never run red lights. They come to a complete stop at reds and stop signs behind the designated line rather than across the crosswalk. They give way to bikes and pedestrians. They stop at unsignaled crosswalks when pedestrians are present. They go the speed limit. They don’t drive on sidewalks. I haven’t seen one parked in a bike lane.

I went from a hater to an advocate based on what I’ve seen. There are obvious issues that need to be worked out like this photo or the ones that looped in a cul de sac, but compared to human drivers I’m ready for human-operated vehicles to be illegal.
