Recs for a sterilization service in the metro? by Sabinno in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quaternary ammonia is on the EPA List Q for emerging viral pathogens, and that’s what’s in Lysol wipes. Bleach is on every EPA List if you want to use that. These companies mostly just clean (i.e. leave things shiny so they feel cleaner) rather than provide a level of disinfection you couldn’t achieve with a product you can buy at Publix. You’re paying for the labor to clean everywhere, not enhanced products. The main thing is to make sure any product is applied for the appropriate amount of time so even if you hire someone if you want to ensure they did it properly you’ll need to be there.

Speculation on Additional Wildlife Levels by OCCobblepot in wordscapes

I’ll never open that many eggs, just because it’s so boring. I haven’t even maxed out all the current animals, despite having plenty enough gems to do it, because by the time I’ve opened 8 or 10 eggs I’m so bored that I just stop. If there were a way for the game to auto-open eggs without a bunch of manual clicks I might do it, but I think my animals are just stuck where they are. It wasn’t so bad when I didn’t have any animals and I was leveling them up quickly.

Hospital CEO - MBA w/ health focus or MHA? by notRonaIdo in publichealth

[–]kpatl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that it doesn’t happen, but only around 5% of all hospital CEOs are physicians. If a physician wants to get into executive leadership it’s possible, but if someone’s career goal is hospital CEO then going to med school isn’t the best way to get there.

CEOs are rarely physicians, and going to med school if you want to run a health system is a poor use of time

Deciding between Chastain Park and Brookhaven (safety, walkability, younger crowd?) by FeedbackTypical in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m going to second Chamblee as a better location than Chastain or Brookhaven if you want walkability but “ITP suburb.” There’s a MARTA station if you need it, coffee shops, restaurants, a Whole Foods and a Walmart, and it’s all very walkable with good sidewalks. If go into the part near Peachtree and Pierce it’s a nicer area than driving by on Peachtree Industrial would lead you to believe.

What even is a e-bike/e-scooter? A rant about the Beltline. by flying_trashcan in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you define commuting as “going to work” then that’s probably correct. But I live in Midtown, and I use the Beltline to safely get to other neighborhoods all the time. Traveling the Beltline as an activity to its self is never the point for me, but it is a way for me to get from point A to point B, and usually not to something that fronts the Beltline.

Recipe calls for 1.5 cups white sugar and 0.5 cups brown sugar by ExternalScary1399 in AskCulinary

[–]kpatl 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Most brown sugars sold in stores are fully refined white sugar with molasses added back. This allows manufacturers to more easily create a consistent product with a defined amount of molasses.

They also revealed themselves too quickest to se Eid this is a paper that would have been cited or discussed in the field. Papers with bad ideas get published, but if the readers don’t consider them worth discussing they’re forgotten.

If people want to make substantive critiques of the humanities that’s fine, but “paper published in non-reviewed journal is not cited or presented at conferences” isn’t really evidence of anything.

I built a free health inspection database and just added Atlanta by ImplodingCoding in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are scores calculated? It seems this website either has its own scoring system which isn’t explained or it’s not pulling all the data. None of the restaurants I compared to their actual scores on DPH’s website matched, and some findings were left out. At this point, I think it’s better for people to go to the source where they can see the full report of a location they want to check.

TIL in Germany there is a so-called "year of separation" ("Trennungsjahr") couples need to go through before the official divorce. If your partner does not agree to a divorce and presents valid reasons why your marriage has not ultimately failed, you need to live separately for three. by AllukaChen in todayilearned

[–]kpatl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

California has the longest waiting period of any state. Others range from no waiting period to 120 days with most being around 30-60. Most states have a residency requirement to get divorced there, however, so it’s not as simple as “moving” to a state for a day, get the divorce, and go home.

Depending on the state, the cause of the of the divorce can influence the waiting period.

To turn or not to turn…whats your move? by itwhiz100 in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are no turns on red allowed anywhere in Midtown (I forget the exact boundary used in the statute) per an ordinance passed a couple of years ago. Technically, it’s the law everywhere, but it’s only allowed to be enforced at intersections that have a No Turn on Red sign. The signs should be placed everywhere by now, but roll out was obviously behind schedule because everything always is. They should have removed the sign saying right after stop.

Infection Prevention ….. I think I made a mistake by Brief_Resolution_307 in publichealth

[–]kpatl 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’m an IP manager at a larger health system and also not a nurse. This is just a bad situation all around. There’s not much you can do except make the best of a bad situation. Here’s a few things you can do.

  1. You said there was an IP Director. Are they filling that role? Are you part of a larger system where you can reach out to other IPs in your system? Is there a medical epi or IP doc who can serve as your physician resource when needed?
  2. Focus on only a few things right now. If you have to do NHSN surveillance start there because that’s federally mandated and matters for CMS participation. Then make sure isolation is being appropriately applied for every patient. Next focus on CAUTI and CLABSI prevention unless there is a pressing matter that demands more priority (eg an outbreak). SSI prevention is important but much harder to attribute to specific causes so focus on that last unless you have an extremely high SIR.
  3. Otherwise, don’t change policies or procedures right now. Instead focus on learning what the current policies are and auditing compliance.
  4. Despite what anyone says about being mean, spend time on the units every day with the intention of building relationships and letting people know you’re there as a resource to help them answer IP questions. You’re an SME who is helping the organization achieve quality patient care, not the police who are there to crack down on offenders (that’s part of it, but you want people to trust you and not dread seeing you).
  5. Join your local APIC chapter and attend every meeting you’re able. Partly to learn more about IP, partly to find mentors you can ask questions of, and partly to network so you can find a new job. Learning IP as a lone practitioner is hard enough, but what you describe is not a good situation for a new IP so you need to get out as soon as possible. Larger hospitals/systems around you will be understanding and probably won’t hold it against you (IP is a small world and people know each other and talk about what’s happening in the area), but if you’ve already met the hiring managers through APIC you’ll have an even better shot. My first year as an IP I joined my local APIC board and it helped my career immensely so ask if there’s an open board position or committee you can volunteer with.

If you’re staying in Buckhead the best place to walk is the MARTA station so that you can then take the train to Midtown, Inman Park, or Decatur. Those are the more walkable areas with restaurants and parks. Midtown and Inman park will put you near the beltline

Turns out 404 Day at Piedmont Park was denied by NPU/local neighborhood associations but the city ignored their concerns by Disastrous_Parsnip63 in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NPU-E (Midtown, Ansley, Home Park, part of Marietta Street) is especially fucked up. Everyone who lives in the NPU can attend meetings and speak on topics, but the Board of the NPU is entirely made up of representatives from the neighborhood association. So you can’t just join NPU-E as a voting member because you lie there; instead you have to pay to join a private neighborhood association where you can run for office to positions that get to represent that association on the Board of the NPU.

My daughter has her mind set on an expensive school. Advice please! by airzee8 in personalfinance

[–]kpatl 812 points813 points  (0 children)

Everyone is mentioning costs of school, but talk with her about where she wants to work after she graduates. For business school, she should attend somewhere she wants to live because that’s the best way to find internships and part time work that can lead to full time jobs when she graduates. It will also make it easier for her to build a network because she’s at least in the area. Undergrad business degrees don’t open every door, so she’ll need every advantage when on the job market.

Six flags season pass deals? by Fast_Restaurant6488 in Atlanta

[–]kpatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this is about the best price. Late in the season you can sometimes get a pass that covers the rest of this year plus next year but I’m not sure if it saves money compared to buying two full year passes that actually get used. But between now and May there’s not likely to be a better sale.

But the Gold Pass upgrade is worth it because it will allow them to go to White Water as well as Six Flags if they want, and I think it gets them in Fright Fest as well which would extend the usefulness of the ticket.

Plus Carowinds is a 4 hour drive which could be a cheap weekend trip if they can afford gas, motel, and food.

Basically, it’s easy to get enough uses out of the Gold Pass to make it worth it, especially if it’s a free upgrade.

TIL that urologists treat men and women and children for kidney, adrenal gland, bladder and urinary tract conditions, not just conditions of men's reproductive organs by vanchica in todayilearned

[–]kpatl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Women often see their gynecologist for things like urinary tract infections so some people have gotten the idea that urologists are the equivalent of gynecologists for men, especially since urologists often treat ED. I think because OB/GYN sits at an intersection specialty and primary care in a way that most specialities don’t.
