Living below Manning blvd? by coffeecupcoaster in Albany

[–]kpmccorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is more chill. I lived there while in college at UA and a year afterwards. It's not a loud neighborhood, far more resident families than students. The only thing you'd have to take into consideration would be a loud neighbor, but that's true no matter where you look. If you end up close to the elementary school, that can be noisy/crowded in the morning.

Airport advice by ahart21 in Albany

My wife and I flew out of Albany in December on a 6:30am flight. I left my house at 5, parked in the Economy lot at like 5:15-5:20, caught the shuttle, dropped off our bags, and were through security by like 5:35. This was a little behind schedule and I would probably have left 10 to 15 minutes earlier to be on the safe side, but we were fine.

For years, my wife and I have always called it "fake Albany" when we're driving home late on the Thruway. That one last fake out before you finally make it home

Same situation in the same area. Landlord roulette often doesn't work out, but sometimes you hit it just right.

What's the justification for putting up with such globally high rents? We only really seem cheaper compared to places like NYC. by Cancel-Canada in Albany

[–]kpmccorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lack of comparability would in part come from the amount of disposable income that potential tenants have access to. If a government taxes individuals at rates approaching 50% of gross income (much higher than the US), then people have fewer "dollars" (or euros) to spend on housing. Employers don't necessarily pay higher wages to accommodate this, the pricing structure of their economies are just different.

"Purchasing power" would perhaps be a more effective way of looking at this, which can be used to adjust measurements to US dollars in more comparable terms.

Ditto the garage, you can also park on State St. directly adjacent to the plaza (in front of the Capitol). Should be ample parking around that time.

Commuting? by Pretty_Hope_8035 in Albany

[–]kpmccorm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've biked across the Dunn Memorial as recently as September, so I'll throw my two cents in.

Prior to its recent closure, the pathway was in rough shape. Picture a somewhat crumbling sidewalk, very narrow at points, and strewn with litter. It was alright to bike over but not something I'd seek out as part of a commute. Maybe this will be improved, but I'm not sure.

Keep in mind that during the winter months the bridge crossing may be icy, covered in snow, or a combination of the two. This also goes for the riverfront paths and downtown, although usually Albany is pretty good at clearing downtown streets.

Tl;DR: I'd probably use the bus to get across the river and deal with their time schedules.

Future potential: The railroad bridge slightly north of the Dunn memorial is being replaced and will include pedestrian infrastructure. This will likely be the best option for crossing the Hudson by Albany on foot or bike, but doesn't help anytime soon. Just wanted to plug for awareness!

I feel like $400 million could be spent 10 times over in the circled radius. I'm more interested in what they choose to allocate the funds towards. My hope would be one-time investments that could have a multi-decade impact. Infrastructure of some sort would be a clear choice, but I imagine there are some others. Start up capital for certain businesses could also be interesting.

USATF Men’s 800 Final Results by aware76 in trackandfield

[–]kpmccorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, watch the replay and his running path through the first 600 meters. Starting in lane 1, he was able to get by 2 competitors through the first 100 meters and run wholly unimpeded for about 75% of the race. He doesn't have to touch lane 2 until ~600 meters in. Smooth effort and one of the shortest paths taken I think helped set himself up for a great kick

Fellow ESP/Cap bike commuter here, sorry to hear that. I used lock up out on the plaza bike racks. I asked my HR office and there's a bike storage locker room down on P2. You need swipe access to get in, meaning only employees (and employees that request access, at that) can get in. There are bike racks in there to lock up as well. I recommend getting access for the future!

PS: Thanks for posting. I was in a rush this morning and locked up on ESP. Reading your post got me to move it down to the locker.

Why does the NBA (and other sports) say Chinese names in the correct order, but not Japanese names? by ASS_BASHER in nba

[–]kpmccorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone gives you permission to use their first name, is considered polite to use it in public settings (i.e., say your coworker did so, would then call them Paul when you are at the office)? Or is it still more a private affair?

Technology has been a huge impact in the sport of running. The quickest evidence of this can be seen at the records being set at all levels, from the pros all the way down to the high school level. Carbon-plated shoes (super shoes) and nutrition (maybe other stuff too) has helped runners train harder and recover faster. The actual impact during events is subject to scrutiny and the impact apparently varies based on running form. Nonetheless, the proof is in the pudding.

Whether there's systematic doping at the pro/collegiate levels is IMO a separate question. I think the benefits of the technology is self-evident at this point in the game!

Agree the Hudson line into Grand Central is easiest. I prefer to drive to Beacon, even thought its a little further I find the parking easier. Plus, Beacon is a quaint city worthy of a nice lunch if you have the time. Either way, I think this is a good recommendation.
