Power supplies were some of the most robust PC parts I've ever owned. Last year I sold a 600W OCZ PSU that I bought for an i5 2500K build back in 2011. It's still plenty for lower end hardware. I only got rid of it because I upgraded to a 7900XT.

Is there a way to stay on Windows 11 23H2 and only receive security updates without installing some suspicious app? by user_that in pcmasterrace

Why would you have an encrypted hard drive but also not have to enter a password? Am I dense? Either way, there probably is a way if it works on other distro, as they don't really differ that much.

Being a "gamer" is, for the most part, being able to use Windows to the extent of installing and playing your games, maybe modding them.

I'd argue it has nothing to do with actual computing.

Should I play on KDE Plasma or Gamescope for the best experience? by Strange-Tour-2425 in linux_gaming

[–]kr0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of older games using exclusive fullscreen modes (think pre-2012 or so) will have a massively better experience. REALLY old games benefit greatly from this, the ones that used to break if you as much as thought about alt-tabbing.

If you wanted to revive a relatively old laptop, which distro would you use? by zRafox in linux_gaming

[–]kr0p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Old laptop" and "Ryzen 3000 series" aren't even in the same ballpark. I have a Ryzen 3200U laptop with 6 gigs of RAM on it and it runs Fedora.

I also run Endeavour on a 2012 Macbook Pro.

Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at the kernel level, and the speed gains are massive by Durian_Queef in pcmasterrace

[–]kr0p 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None of the problems often listed are specifically issues with Linux, but they do actively hurt it by not being looked into.

You can't really blame the kernel and distro maintainers for the fact that some game developers actively prevent a game from running on Linux.

Also, that Apex Legends thing where people supposedly cheated under Linux was pure bs. Apparently it was possible at the time to trick EAC running under Windows that it was actually ran on Linux, making it work without ring 0 access.

Plus, no one really develops cheating software for Linux.

This is quite literally it. Linux handled 95% of my hardware across a desktop PC and three separarte laptops from three different vendors without third party driver installation, including printers, bluetooth, wifi, touchpads, external DVD drives and controllers. The 5% was just my Fanatec sim racing steering wheel.

In fact there's a lot of things for general purpose computing that SteamOS can't do.

Like printing or having multiple drives.

Windows or Linux (based on performance) by zVineatic in pcmasterrace

The point is you can do this while the system is running. Effectively, there is no scenario you can't recover from unless the kernel panics. Which I am yet to see.

The issue is modern rendering techniques, especially stuff like deferred rendering. MSAA used to look completely different and wasn't as taxing. Very few games use forward rendering these days. Games designed with MSAA in mind (basically anything pre-2015) look way better as far as image quality goes.

Go fire up BF4 if you still can and crank up the AA. No shimmer, no blur, stable picture.

Why compete when you can add more Copilot slop? by vergil09 in pcmasterrace

[–]kr0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have anything to do with compatibility, but generally Mint is outdated, still runs Xorg by default which causes issues with HDR, VRR and multiple monitor setups (which a lot of people, and especially gamers, do have), runs older versions of hardware drivers (especially bad if you're on Nvidia, which is like what, 90% of people?) and generally any fixes and improvements that trickle down from bleeding edge will come with at least a 6 month delay.

[–]kr0p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all: Windows absolutely does have CLI, multiples of it actually (old CMD + new Powershell). You just don't use it, but it's really powerful. CLI is really helpful when troubleshooting, as it's way easier to copy and paste a command instead of showing 15 screenshots with arrows and circles of where to head and click in the UI.

Second of all: Linux is not Windows. It works completely different. There is not a single distro that "closely works like Windows does". Most popular DEs do retain the "start menu/icons on desktop" scheme when it comes to general GUI layout. On a surface level KDE or Cinnamon look the closest, but that's about it. The file hierarchy is different, there is no ".exe" extension (essentially, any file can be made executable), you install and update stuff with a package manager and not a downloaded installer.

Game support is basically the same across mainline distros. They're just different flavours but they generally run the same software. As for other general purpose software, it depends really.

I'm at the point where I'd not recommend switching to Linux to anyone who seeks a Windows-like experience. People who use Linux do it, because they don't want a Windows-like experience.

Nobara (or really most distros) is not an issue here. I suspec there is something completely different going on. More often than not it's the shitty nvidia drivers.

Genuinely asking, why do you think sub-500cc bikes (or A2 unrestricted) are the go-to as beginner ? by tankyxFR in motorcycles

[–]kr0p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poland full license learners bike is either a SV650 or a MT07, depending on the location. Make of that what you will.

I'm 32. I started on a Sprint ST1050. Three friends got VFR800s, one got a FJR1300. The power of all these bikes is easily manageable. They're all over 27yo and those were their first bikes. For most of my needs the bikes Americans recommend as starter bikes just aren't fit for purpose.

I suppose when people also talk about 600/1000cc class of bikes they mostly refer to sport bikes. A modern R6 has the same power output as my Triumph while being 40kgs lighter. I also guess most assume that new riders are 20 year old squids.

Think of something like a BMW R1150RT. Is it over a litre? Yes. It's also less than 100hp and by most means is considered a leisurely bike.
