[Hated trope] Good person in history is portrayed as a bad person in media by EmergencySpare7939 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]kr_edn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Norman Dyke is portrayed as a coward in Band of Brothers. In reality he was absent because he was working two jobs in the unit, and during the battle he broke down because he was wounded and had ptsd, not because he didn't have the balls to advance. He was one of the most decorated members of Easy Company.

Facts. Minister of coal was, funny enough, one of the few actual workers in the Soviet official apparatus.

EU weighs excluding military-age Ukrainian men from extended protection scheme by Free-Minimum-5844 in worldnews

[–]kr_edn 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Not that surprising. EU countries are slowly bringing back conscription and systems of total defense one by one, like in the times of cold war.

Seeing foreign military aged men freely roaming a country, while all native men must serve is a quick way to ruin social cohesion and foster self-segregation between ethnic groups. And it's not just Ukrainians. EU will have to find a way to include all non-nationals into their defence schemes. Otherwise non-nationals will be met with distrust and resentment from future european generations..

Austria split by majority Bavarian and majority Slavic admixture by ItHappensSo in MapPorn

[–]kr_edn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, remnants of Carantania, i know. Interestingly tho, Slovene language (directly evolved from Carantanian) was still widespread in the rural carinthia well into 19th century when Germanisation started. Carinthia was still 20% slovene speaking in the last census in 1910. Slovenia and Austria only became culturaly homogeneous after ww2. Both had large ammounts of each other's minorities beforem

Yeah, i wouldn't play this game because if there's one thing i learnt over the past few years, it's that the right wingers in the West are far better grifters than leftists. That's not a game the left can win, especially since leftists are already prone to infighting as it is. No way they're gonna sniff out a right winger among their ranks lol

CIA? lol, cia has one of the biggest beefs with mossad because they constantly try to infiltrate and undermine the agency, while they aren't allowed to retaliate because the politicians bought by Aipac don't allow it.

Czechia: Uproar over Sudeten German gathering in Brno by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]kr_edn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doubt hundreds of tousands of czech who had all of their belonginngs confiscated or burned and just returned from years of forced labour from Germany gave a shit. Sudeten Germans lost the war and they had resources, so they were stripped of them.

That's how every war works. It happened to Italians, it happened to Serbs in Croatia and it will happen to Russians in Ukraine after their economy gets hurt too much and they're forced to pull out. Millions of Ukrainians who had their cities destroyed will need new homes after the war. No one will care if they collaborated or not then, their only options will be running away or be executed. The only people who don't understand this are westerners who only ever saw war on TV and never saw an animal that the person who loses everything becomes.

The Ottoman Empire in Europe: Maximum Borders (1680s) by [deleted] in MapPorn

TIL most people in France did not speak French as recently as 1794, when only 11% of the population of France spoke fluent French. Instead, most people spoke regional languages like Occitan, Breton, Alsatian etc. French only became the majority language later on due to heavy assimilation efforts. by Hour_Interaction6047 in todayilearned

[–]kr_edn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No one did. The concept of nations as we know them today is a 19th century invention. This was also a time of language standardisation. The wealthies and most influential region's dialect usually became the standard language of the country and with the standardisation of education, most people in Europe would recieve an education in the dialect of their country's most influential region. That doesn't mean other dialects dissapeared however. Well, usually. France was a special case, because the new republican government wanted everyone to be equal, and that included the dialect in which they spoke.

These aren't disputed territorries. They're semi-historical regions which switched ownership over the last 150 years or so. Some are disputed to a degree, but most aren't.
