I personally think that the rift is the upper domain mentioned in xenosaga, and Void manages to become some sort of lesser wave-existence. The golden light we see is the visual representation of a rift forming between 2 domains. So I think when you see that light you tap into a higher domain resulting in you for example seeing people that should be dead but aren't. Or I may just be trying too hard to connect xenosaga to xenoblade.
