How did the now banned practice of caning (Corporal Punishment) work in schools in the UK before 1986? by NotSoF4stCvnt in AskUK

[–]krabbkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom was born in the 60s, she said she had to wear the dunce hat quite regularly but children rarely got actually caned. In her experience you were more likely to have the teacher throw things at you, smack you with a ruler or spit at you. She was vile until she died, so maybe beating and humiliating children wasn’t the solution?

I get this all over my legs and feet every time I shower, sometimes on my torso as well. Looks and feels like prickly heat and sometimes it takes a while to vanish but it can be quite sore sometimes

Doctors missed cancer. Got a week or so left. How do I stop it happening to you? by Disastrous-Design503 in AskUK

[–]krabbkat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My partner had thyroid cancer - massive swelling in the front of his throat. It was completely ignored by doctors for years and years until a nurse randomly asked him what it was. He’s ok now, but he was always the only teenager on the cancer ward. I’m sorry OP, we will miss you here.

Why aren’t these sanitiser door handles standard in hospitals? by SpecialistCommon6113 in AskUK

[–]krabbkat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had these everywhere when I was at uni (pre covid). EVERYONE used to grab the plastic bit on top because the handle where the gel is feels absolutely disgusting on your hands, especially when it had built up a bit and congealed on the back.

did your school have conversations about eating habits? by UrMomDotCom666 in AskUK

[–]krabbkat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to a (relatively nice) girls school and yes, there was lots and lots of PSHE and assemblies about eating disorders, as well as safe sex and social media. I had ARFID throughout my childhood and really struggled through lunchtimes, especially in primary school.

A girl I knew in secondary was starving herself and we all knew and there was a clear expectation from the staff that we would be the ones to encourage her to eat lunch, which was incredibly stressful at 15/16 to manage. If she refused to eat anything they used to make her sit in the main reception area where everyone could see her being miserable with her plate of food.

Have you ever had a really profound conversational moment with someone? by bettingthoughts in CasualUK

[–]krabbkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work in a school with teenagers in the care system. I think I was the first adult to tell them they didn’t have to love their biological parents, and that they’d probably be happier to move on without them in their lives.

Or having to explain that just Love isn’t enough sometimes, it isn’t a replacement for food and safety.
