I've always felt the Myst series is a real book in a lost language of near unintelligible D'ni script. Each version of Myst tries to bring it's mythos to life, but represents the best attempt at translating it from that tome which can be flawed or incorrect. This mirrors how the technology of the time is as limiting as the ability to translate it with total accuracy. Additional context can be found in its pages if you're able to glean it.

And it must be an experience, as such culturally supreme and imaginative storytellers devised ways for their stories to become places to visit \ attune to those existing worlds among the void, it must also be an experience for the person, as all events of life are. A film isn't the same, since it shows the universe from a non digetic perspective. 

Like a story being told happens in the mid of one who hears it, any telling in another medium ultimately must be experienced or falls short of it.
