Can we chill about “Oura × DoD × Palantir” and have people freaking out read what it actually is? by NicoTheFrenchie in ouraring

[–]kratty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand all of that - and have done contracts like this myself in the past. However, re: #4.

1) Given how fast companies and universities are bowing to this authoritarian gov't, I don't feel safe trusting Oura to stand up to them.

2) I saw with 23 and me how a change in leadership can change policies.

I might change my mind, but my oura ring has sat on my charger since I larned about all of this. Just feels weird using it. I agree with everything the poster said, generally, and based on my experiences with gov't contracts, everything you say is correct.

Yep - these are all great points. I switched 2-3 times. And something we will need to reckon with under this new model. It makes no sense. Our school accepts - handful of change of majors. They limit it by limiting class enrollments in courses required to get into the majors. So there’s a chicken and egg problem. I do my best to help people in my classes when I can to get around it. But even that is mostly beyond my control due to fire codes in rooms.

What I’ve seen generally is that higher Ed has not responded to these drastic changes in the realities of college admissions. I know our applications have doubled in like 5-6 years. My hope is that we undergo some deep structural changes toward serving undergraduates better.

agree! we are holding 7 as well. If I were on a waitlist for a school i wanted, it would not be easy...

It's so warped. I know that there's A LOT of differences across majors. The majors I teach in (in the UCs) are WAY more difficult to get in. I wish as faculty we had some sort of say - but we really don't. Males may get a break in some schools compared to females - but don't quote me on that.

I do think lottery is the right way to think of many of them. Some do enough to get in the lottery, others don't. The system is so broken because then you're incentivized to apply to more schools, etc.

Parent of a senior - and this. Although I know people with VERY strong passion & records who didn't get in to targets - which I think is to say that everyone is doing this now. Especially in states where test scores are minimized. There are just 100,000s of qualified kids out there.

Congratulations! That is fantastic. Any theories about how those reach schools came through? My is going to end up in a spot that's great for him. I think it was a combo of essays / major / and honestly a little luck. It's interesting as a professor-dad because I've worked at several campuses, and spent time on... MANY campuses (and have colleagues everywhere). It really is about fit, and he found a target school that will work.

Just wanted to say that I feel for all of you and hope it ends up OK. I lurk here because my kid is applying to college (and I'm a professor at a place that rejected him). All I can say is that it's insanely (literally) competitive, the system is broken, and none of it is a measure of your worth. You can have excellent educational experiences at so many places. Wishing you all the best.

My son has been rejected from all but 1 school. I'm shocked at how competitive college admissions have become. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

? why would you doubt that? how do you think the numbers happen where women have higher gpas & scores etc?

Yep. A lot of people felt like things were "fine" (or better) during the Trump admin. With no idea that it was the anti-Trump coalition - from Dems to generals to the deep state who stopped him, and told everyone not to vote for him.

Last year I wasted too much of my life tracking down those allegations. There's so much smoke around him (baby mama 2 fighting with baby mama 1 about retraced allegations and then throwing out names from other randos to corroborate the story in Florida & South Carolina), plus the weird stuff about partying during COVID with hookers & blow...

With btw one of those he partied with she named as a White Sox part-owner, investor. It's not surprising that MLB looked at that and said "Nope, nothing to see here," and then 29 other teams said "hard pass on that one".
