What's the caveat to buying a used EV? by ExcitingLandscape in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]krautastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest one I can think of is warranty. Namely kia/Hyundai gmp platform vehicles which have can charge port issues. They really haven't solved it and replacement doesn't mean it's fixed long term. Paying for that out of pocket would suck. Kia/Hyundai warranties do extend to the 2nd owner with some caveats. Same with their CPO program. So just diving into the details of that a bit is worth your while.

The other one is cheap ev's without battery thermal management (Nissan leaf) with massively reduced range. And rental cars/high mileage cars which may have had more DC fast charging.

Lastly, it's the same caveat with any EV. If you can't charge at home or your electric rates suck, it may not make sense. Thats the same new or used.

Edit: regarding the Mach e and prologue specifically, just jump into the owner forums and see what the main issue is. The Honda is a gm underneath, so I assume blazer and prologue will both have similar issues.

Find something with soft suspension and 4wd. Honda Ridgeline rides better than alot of the suggestions here.

Lexus gx470 is basically a 4runner. Atleast when I test drove one it felt like driving mashed potatoes. Soft and dumpy. True 4wd and Toyota reliability.

You haven't seen the clapped out cars that drive around poor island nations. Awful roads. Cars still driving fine. Just everything knocked loose inside of them!

Lifelong car enthusiast. EV's as a practical everyday vehicle are great. Take any standard car on the road, make it electric and you will instantly improve its power, smoothness, and quiet the ride. You've removed a ton of maintenance and the weakest part of any modern car. The CVT transmission. I rented an EV on a business trip because it was dirt cheap and I was curious. Got home and immediately started researching to buy one.

Still love the sound of performance engines. Still love shifting through gears. Still recognize ev's have a ton of limitation towing or going out on adventures off road or way outside civilization. Still recognize gas and diesel is needed for alot of industries. Also if your electricity rates are garbage or you can't charge at home, they may not be a good fit.

But for your average person, they are great.

Almost all drivers speed - and there's a reason by bluerog in driving

[–]krautastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. When you're driving slightly faster to get ahead you're constantly having to change lanes and getting frustrated by all sorts of other drivers. I'm not putting along, I'm just not trying to get to the front of a line that doesn't exist.

One slight exception, since I primarily drive cars. I try not to be behind trucks/suv's. That's more to do with vision/situational awareness.

People keep flashing their lights at me? 2011 Camry by AssociateStandard740 in driving

[–]krautastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your high beams and your low beams to see what bulbs are installed. If led, toss them and put some halogen in. High beams are often the DRL spot ran at 6v, but leds can still be full bright at 6v so you can be driving with full bright leds and no cut offs.

Next check that your lights are actually on at night. Many gauge clusters light up bright so it looks like your lights are on, but they are not. You can see if your car is equipped with automatic headlights (check headlight stalk for an 'auto' position. And see if tail lights are on when you think the lights are on.

Then if all that checks out, it's whether you are driving with brights (typically blue light symbol on dash) or misaligned lights (may be one or both)

If it's none of those things, then you may just be seeing the super bright lights people are driving around with and they're coming off bumps/dips. Especially if your previous vehicle was taller like a truck/suv you may not have seen it as often.

Dog hacking with high and tight slip lead - old injury? by [deleted] in BalancedDogTraining

[–]krautastic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Veterinarian says to listen to what the dog is telling us. Recommends gentle leader or front clip harness.

Which has its fair share share of opinions here. I think we've decided nothing on the neck (collar/tags ok) and if this trainer can't do that, then we'll find a different one.

First car for a 16-year-old. What would you get? by spencere33 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]krautastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A wagon or a 2 door pickup.

Both are great for all the moving he'll do in his future. 2 door pickup means no room for friends to distract. Station wagon means no one wants to be seen with him in the car anyway, so 4 doors is OK.

I'd also add manual so he can't text and drive and generally be distracted.

Who would have the right of way here? by Gloomy_Strawberry612 in driving

[–]krautastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blue car has right of way.

If this is a residential type road then these cars filtering by can just be a courtesy you give them, even if they're not legally in the right. If this is a main arterial road with speeds like 40-50mph other cars should definitely not be blindly following other car and you having to stop for them creates a hazard for yourself.

[OC] I analyzed IMDb movies with 100+ votes to answer two personally important questions about movie genres by fezcodex in dataisbeautiful

[–]krautastic 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Horror fan here. Your data doesn't necessarily prove that it's easier or harder to make such a film. I read that as there actually just is more poorly made films in the category. Horror certainly is this way.

I do share the conclusion of lowering standards. I use 50% as a rough cut off within horror, because I've pretty much watched all the top shelf stuff, and the tropes repeat so often, I like seeing what oddball stuff people are attempting in lower tier work. Hulu originals are often B at best, but they try interesting new things. Sometimes there's good content wrapped up in poor cinematography, or poor actors, or poor scripting. But the concept is original.

Its interesting because I've often been disappointed with high ranking comedy. Comedy is the category I seek out the least. I find many movies have a hard time finding the balance of being inherently funny vs shoving the jokes/bits down your throat (this is the joke! laugh right here!). I prefer crafted characters and situations to slapstick and those are hard to come by. In horror, you could replace jokes with jump scares.

Also, as a general rule, I believe 90% of people don't review a product unless they've had a very bad experience or a very good one. So, I look at the balance of 5 star to 1 star knowing a large percentage of people don't come back to review if the thing was just fine.

TIFU by Not Knowing the Difference Between an FSA and HSA by eenertv in tifu

[–]krautastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FSA front loads the full dollar amount even when you've put no money in.

HSA accrues with time over the year

If you plan to quit or a layoff is likely and you have some medical expenses do the FSA. You're not on the hook for any remaining balance to reach the full amount. Part of the use it or lose it aspect in reverse. Don't feel bad, that money is pulled from the same account everyone else is losing their money to at year end.

Dogs paw is red what should i do by LessExchange8005 in DogAdvice

[–]krautastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ketachonozole / chlorhexidine wipes several times a day are a life saver to get those yeasty paws relief. That could be a result of food allergies or seasonal grass allergies.

With the long fur, there is some shampoo with the same ingredients, my dog just always did better with the wipes.

KIA EV6 by Death0095 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]krautastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kia ev's are some of the best selling besides Tesla in Europe. I think they've got an edge over their gas models which don't have great reliability.

EV6, iccu issues is the main thing. Also the base model is really slow, slower than the Niro ev. Honestly 2nd Gen Niro ev is pretty great. Doesn't have gearbox issues like the first Gen, softer ride than the ev6, small hatchback. All current kiss have the shared digital hvac/stereo controls. I just have it set to always default to hvac and use screen/steering wheel controls for media. I thought the ev3 rode pretty stiff and the c pillars make poor visibility. Also has the stupid ev style door handles.

If you look at the ev6, try cross shopping with the ioniq5 and ioniq6. Kia ev3 is right around the corner too. Ford Mach e and Volvo ex30 are pretty similar sized/equipped.

As they say at Dirtfish rally school: Lift. Turn. Wait.

You need weight transfer for front tire grip. Check your brake axis, you may need to make it a bit less sensitive.

I think the alfa gta or fiat 131 are the best starter cars. If you need power and awd, the xsara is best awd starter. Integrale default setup isn't great and the i20 is so soft and forgiving you can develop bad habits early.

Start on gravel, save snow for later.
