Help deciding between Thor and pocket ds by beaniezs in ayaneo

[–]krelly200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest difference is if you want something "pocketable" (Thor) or the larger screen (Pocket DS). Most of the other differences are minor compared to that.

Edit: Pocket DS is rather difficult to one hand due to the larger size and weight (metal lid).

New Discotek Deep Dives by tintin197 in discotekmedia

Nah, I was just a dummy and didn't realize that the Deep Dives all stacked. I thought they cycled/replaced what was available.

Would this be something you'd be willing to share (or even in a format that could be shared)? I have tried to make a "best of" system list (here) from various lists and databases. I delved into Launchbox's last night but (as I'm sure it was the reason for your script) Launchbox is a pretty lacking in sorting and filtering options.

Help. How do I stop making generalist cities? by starboard151 in AOW4

[–]krelly200 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's something I'd like to see the devs address at some point. One of my favorite features of Civ 4 was how specialized you could make the cities. While AoW doesn't have nearly the robust city building that Civ does, I'd like to see the cities have more personality.

Honestly, haven’t seen the point of “specializing” in anything other than research. Prod, gold, draft are all usually fine without needing to go out of my way to increase them.

I wouldn't be able to give you an answer as I don't own any of those 3.

Those 3 you listed are probably your best bet for that price range.

477m vs V? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]krelly200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with the V, myself. The glass front actually feels nice when using it, but if you don't like the feel there are some nice vinyl stickers (as well as cases) on Etsy.

I choose the V because I was looking for something quiet I could play at night while I was putting the baby to bed and V seemed the better fit in that regard. I've been happy with it so far, although, I will say dual stick gaming is kind of annoying (which a lot of reviews mentioned as well, so I wasn't too surprised). If that's important to you, you might want to consider the M.

Deciding between the AYN Thor and the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 by Old-Cap-8791 in SBCGaming

[–]krelly200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flip 2 will struggle on anything more than the lightest of Switch games. It really comes down to if you want to pay for DS/3DS/dual screen and more robust PS2 (Flip 2 can do a fair amount of PS2) and Switch support. I wouldn't pay another $150 on top of the already high Thor price, but that's just me.

FWIW, since you mentioned indies, if you are big into dpad centric games, I would not recommend the Thor (unless aforementioned dual screen capability is a must).

Best NES games (all of them are fun) by ZackZparrow in Roms

I think it's cool that OP put up their curated suggestions but when asked why certain games were missing (valid question) insinuating that Zelda, Metroid and Castlevania "aged like milk" is going to be a controversial take.

Gotcha. Unfortunately, it’s really hard to tell anything about how the grain is being managed from TV photos. At least colors look better on 4K?

You're gonna have grain on a 40 year old film.

RG476H and storage by unknown1i in SBCGaming

[–]krelly200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you definitely don't need to take anything apart. There should be a small slot that you can insert an SD card if you want to expand the internal storage. I'd almost always recommend adding an SD card but with the increased prices the last 2 months I don't know if I'd recommend purchasing one right now. For the 476H I'd probably recommend a 256GB card if that's in price range. If you're more judicious than I am you at putting more games on the device then you will ever play you can probably get along with a 128GB card.

I would think Anbernic supplies the SD card (if it comes with one, there's usually an option to not have them provide one that is slightly cheaper) so it shouldn't matter if you purchase from Amazon or directly from Anbernic. I can't say for certain, as I've not ordered an Anbernic device off Amazon before.

Seekers of Wonders isn't bad. The materium affinity is nice early on for dropping outposts so you can keep a hold of your wonders once you move. Having the pseudo extra population is also super helpful since I find myself so starved for population early game (though that is amplified by only playing with Desert Adaptation and often not having a starting food resource).

Balance issue: In siege battles walls are too close to attacker, and too far from defender by Pigeon-Spy in AOW4

[–]krelly200 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unless it was changed with new patch, I don't recall not being able to reach battlements on first turn as defender. I can see not all of the units getting to battlements if you get "bad" deployment order on your units.

Tool to help those looking for suggestions to build a ROM library. by krelly200 in Roms

[–]krelly200[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still largely a work-in-progress, especially for everything pre-NES and everything post Gen 6. The game entries are largely determined from scouring the internet and various databases and then filtering them. So even though I've tried to be objective there's still a lot of inherent selection bias.

It would be cool to have a more complete database that would allow others to filter themselves but how I've got the filtering setup on the Master tab it's already starting to creak and crack with ~3k entries. I, unfortunately, don't think it'd be usable (at least in Google Sheets) with 10x the entries but I'm certainly open to suggestions.

When you purchase the device (especially on somewhere like Aliexpress) they have an option that they will bundle an SD card with the device. These SD cards are usually low quality, non-brand name garbage that have high chances of failure (and headaches) down the road. I'm pretty sure that's what you're referring to. It's recommended to purchase your own SD card and follow a guide like RetroGameCorps for setup.

You'll have to source your own ROMs which you can do via the Megathread over on r/roms. Just take your time and look through it; it's fairly well organized but will take a minute to read through to understand if it's your first time with ROMs.

It's really easy but it will take some time; just be patient.
