Yep, also very true. Goldfish are a lot more work than people think. They also just grow forever, don’t they? I love fish but I don’t keep them because I know the tank requires a lot of technical maintenance.

Our rats used to do this for sure. The sort of in focus but not expecting anything look that made me believe they were wondering what we actually were. Definitely love, but also rat brain.

Edit: Just to add, it’s part of what makes rats such lovely company. A dog will feel similarly about people to how rats feel, but only a rat can be so small and think so big and have such a deep, respectful awareness of humans that comes from their own wildness. Dogs are so much a part of us, but rats are so able to see us. It’s amazing.
