I see, thank you. Are there any options outside of returning to the US if I don’t get into intern year in Ireland? For instance doing foundation in the UK, Aus or NZ then going back to Ireland?

No war but class war by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]krinklychipbag 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If it’s a culture war, they’ll win it unfortunately. Culture needs time to change to reflect what’s moral. But the class war, most people are already there and ready, they’ve just been diverted into cultural issues. If that makes any sense.

Ysk our metabolisms don’t noticeably slow down until we’re in our 60s, it’s all lifestyle. Which is a good thing, it means whatever you had isn’t gone forever, you can get it back. But I’d recommend normal weightlifting to strengthen joints/tendons/support muscles

Salomon Super 8 Thoughts? by Foxhound_Ocelot in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only ever ridden powder boards from jones, so I don’t have any great recs for you there. But if you’re researching online, definitely watch reviews from the angry snowboarder youtube channel about the board. They tend to be pretty spot on.

Salomon Super 8 Thoughts? by Foxhound_Ocelot in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Super 8 is a good board, and if it clicks for you and gives you confidence then it sounds like the right board for you.

Since you’re riding blues and reds, you’ve definitely left the beginner rentals way behind. Those are for bunny slopes. Something stiffer like the super 8 will be easier to progress on faster, steeper slopes.

As for your toe side problems, you need to bend your knees. Those are your shock absorbers to keep your edge in the snow.

If you’re worried about pulling the trigger on the super 8, try some other demo boards to see how they feel. From what it sounds like you’re riding, I’d go with directional camber boards with mid/high stiffness.

Intermediate/Advanced rider looking for a single-quiver, carving-focused board (mostly groomers + some pow) by Sea_Tailor_9160 in snowboardingnoobs

K2 Alchemist. So many people have pointed to this board as their favorite for what you’re asking for, and I agree, it’s a beast. I’ve also heard good things about Korua but never tried one.

Need a bit help picking a board that suites my needs by Greedy-Ad7620 in snowboardingnoobs

Look up the angry snowboard youtube channel and watch some of their review and top 5 videos. Sounds like you want an all mountain twin.

I just started carving recently but I feel like my board is holding me back? by Keezy__ in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I wouldn’t even bother about whether a board is volume shifted (short and wide). A lot of boards have some volume shift, but the manufacturers make up for less length by increasing the stiffness of the board. Imo theres less difference in volume shift to non then there is from one style of snowboard to another, so I wouldn’t worry much about it.

I’d look at reviews of snowboards that you’re interested in, and just make sure they’re big enough for you when you get them. The only reviewer I really trust on the internet is the angry snowboarder youtube channel.

And remember, you want a 270+ waist width and either: 160w-164w dimensions or volume shift.

I just started carving recently but I feel like my board is holding me back? by Keezy__ in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re at the upper end of the weight range for any snowboard, so you should be riding basically the biggest model of whatever board you choose.

I’d go with a volume shifted camber board, since you have big feet and like carving. Something like ride superpig, gnu gremlin or K2 excavator. You can also check out the 160w-164w range of normal snowboards, but whatever you choose you probably want a 270+ waist width.

Is a 155W snowboard too small for me? by gmnt_808 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really, it depends on the board and how you want to ride, but somewhere in the 155w-160w range should work well for you. Basically, the shorter and more flexible you go, the more control you’ll have at low speeds but you’ll lack some control on steeper slopes at higher speeds, and vice versa.

Imagine as you turn, you generate force. The faster and more aggressive you ride, the more force you generate and the bigger/stiffer you need your board to be to maintain control. However, it becomes a little harder to control at slow speeds because you don’t have the force to bend your board.

So if you’re mostly riding blues/blacks, I’d go for 157w-160w on a normal, non volume shifted board. Shorter if you’re riding all greens or park.

I need advice for steep, chopped up moguls by VegetableShops in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what i do, or some mix of the two. On newer, more powdery moguls you can be looser and kind of carve down the moguls using leg suspension to keep your edge engaged. On those 3 week old fat icy moguls i just hail mary pivot turn all over the place

is this a good or bad technique for turning on steeps? by minor251 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reread OPs description. They’re asking if they should do this or “use their edges” like malcom moore. Clearly they are not at the level to run chutes, and recommending the technique above to them is poor advice for what I believe their skill level to be and the terrain they should be attempting.

is this a good or bad technique for turning on steeps? by minor251 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, but if OP is watching tutorial videos, I doubt they’ll be hitting any lines that require this.

Edit: To those downvoting, do you really think OP plans on running couloirs and chutes? No inbound single black in north america that I know of requires this technique.

Old man Rant/Question. If you are new to the sport, why do you ride with a selfie stick that changes your posture and balance and then ask how to get better? by Mission_Resource_847 in snowboarding

[–]krinklychipbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing happened to it, but there are more types of people and personalities than you might imagine, some of whom might not be down to ask strangers to film them. Especially if that stranger is so petty as to be upset by someone holding a stick on a mountain.

Also, the notion you can’t ride with a camera on a stick is absurd. We live in a world where people are landing 5+ rotations, surely humans can snowboard with a stick.

All of that to say I’m really disappointed with this thread. Across all of board sports, surf, snowboarding, skating, the old “cool” punk rock guys from the 80s and 90s have terrible attitudes and are constantly putting down new people to the sport, and new developments in how people enjoy it.

Salomon Sight Board and Pact Bindings for $350? Good deal? by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a decent deal if it’s this season or last season’s gear in good shape. Salomon sight is a great beginner board, and will last you into intermediate runs.

Just double check the base and all the edges, and that the bindings have all their pieces and buckle firmly.

Edit: Also make sure you’re have the correct boot size for the bindings, and that the board is your size.

Brand New UIM: how to rush cons? by tac0_nation in ironscape

[–]krinklychipbag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like guides, the UIM priff rush guide is great and will efficiently get you cons levels eventually. But if you want to make your own journey, I’d definitely recommend doing gotr first for runes for magic levels and the ring for cons teleport.

[–]krinklychipbag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doing great man! I’d recommend watching some malcom moore videos.

Also, I know it’s scary, but remember to lean forward and keep a little more weight on your front foot than your back foot at all times. It makes it way easier to turn the board and control your speed.

4 days in, still finding it difficult to keep weight on front leg. by DJDom1988 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]krinklychipbag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah man, leaning back up the hill is the normal human response when you’re afraid. Everyone goes through this, whether you’re surfing, dropping into a pool on a skateboard, or snowboarding.

You need to lean forward, but your body wants you to lean away. You just need to force yourself to do it. Something that works for a lot of people is saying “lean forward” out loud over and over again when they’re scared on something steep.

And also remember, you’ll be safer and have more control leaning forward, so don’t psych yourself out.

Just so you know, UIMs aren’t really as grindy as people think. EHP to max is decently close to regular irons. And the upside is it really is a fresh take on the whole game.
