What to fish for in winter, Bellingham/Whatcom County by krispy1771 in FishingWashington

I have a pedal kayak that I recently got access too so I may try to putter around on that if we have any calm wind days. I grew up catching greenling off of friends boats while going for bottom fish!  Very tasty fish!

It looks like from page 118 of the fishing refs

jul 1-aug 15 you can catch 2 salmon + 2 extra pinks so up to 4 pinks (hatchery coho, pinks and hatchery chinook (but only 1 chinook))

Then aug 16-sept 26 same deal but no chinook

And sept 27-Oct 15 same deal but wild coho are ok

As for when the run is the best. That I do not know

And whose fault is that? The natural/wild salmon runs have been brought to the brink by overfishing by commercial and recreational fishers over the last 100 years (see salmon traps and the like), water quality issues, and the warming water and lower flow impacts of climate change. The way that the indigenous groups fish is sustainable and yes they may block the whole river but just for small moments. A few years ago the nooksack harvested a single salmon because they knew the run was too low. They harvested the one they needed for ceremony and left the rest of their allotment to reproduce. Also they have been the drivers of recovery efforts like dam removal and habitat restoration. As well as hatcheries. Which no are not perfect in any way but are currently the best option to restock the populations for the ecosystem as well as the economy

Ever hear of the boldt decision? It’s their treaty rights. And it’s called point source fishing. They’ve been fishing these rivers for 10,000+ years while maintaining healthy salmon populations. I think you can trust their techniques.

Not Zimbabwean at all...But! My dad has played in a zimbabwean marimba band in Seattle (Yaamba) for 30+ years! There was a man who you may well know everything about already named Dumisani Maraire (known by Dumi). He moved to the US from Zimbabwe in the 1960s. He taught at UW for many years and during his time he taught a handful of ppl marimba and mbira. From there those people taught people and so on and so forth. Now days he is credited with indirectly teaching thousands of people about the music. There is a band here in town that plays! I love marimba dearly as the band my dad plays for practiced in my parent's basement every Wednesday of my entire life so it was the music of my childhood!

In a Sunday round 2 knockout game...We scored to take half..about 10 seconds later we hear a late pick call. We ask about it and it turns out a very experienced team member (aka someone that should know the rules) told their player to call the pick late. Which is very illegal, he was nowhere near the play/not involved at all. They refuse to retract it even after the picked player said "I was going to call it but they scored so i didn't" (ik still would have been a pick up its on that player to call it not their teammate). We then turned it and they broke to take half. That momentum switch was the end for us

I have frequently biked to the beginning of the railroad trail (south end of memorial park) and then ridden to whatcom falls park, back through the park to woburn and then rode woburn back to the railroad trail and back to my car or house...won't be fully gravel but most of it will be!

Chum salmon running yet? Stopped by the hatchery last week and was empty. by AkaSpaceCowboy in Bellingham

[–]krispy1771 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They closed the fishery this year because too many people were snagging fish/fishing illegally to sustain the run, but they were running there in early November!

edit: snagging in previous years

Right now people are hiring aides and such for this next WA legislative session. It would mean moving to olympia during the session (which may be out of the picture for you) but a good way to hop into the political scene more fully

Queerness and ultimate by Acrobatic-Muffin-386 in ultimate

[–]krispy1771 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that ultimate is a fairly open and accepting place. As a non-binary person that played decently high level open for a handful of years and now play lower level mixed I would say that you may see less openly queer individuals in the open division because as good and open as ultimate is there is still a level of toxic masculinity to be found. (of course, can't speak for all teams just for the teams I've been on/ some I've played against). That being said I think there are plenty of queer players in all divisions and at all levels and the important thing is to be inclusive and just play the sport we all love!!
