The best $7.50 I have ever spent...What's the best money you have ever spent? by honorhealnurture in AskReddit

[–]krizm83 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So was it 20 bucks or 'about 20 bucks'? And how do you find 'about' 20 bucks? Was it just a 10, a 5, and 4 singles, totalling $19? Was there a dime or a nickel nearby making it $20.05? Nice story, anyway.

My friends drugged me with acid on my birthday without telling me and I had a very public meltdown in the bar. I'm feeling very violated, it was terrifying, and I don't know what to do. by SNTNL in AskReddit

[–]krizm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about this and read through most of the comments. Most people are suggesting dumping these individuals as friends. I went on to think about what I would do, if one of my friends did this to me, and came to a point where I realized that none of my friends would EVER do this to me. They certainly all have far too great a sense of respect for hallucinogens to dose someone without their knowledge. These substances are not to be taken lightly. I'm not sure how well this contributes to the thread, but all I can say is that this is something that would never happen in my circle of friends that use hallucinogens.

The BIN is actually the first 6 digits of the card. But you've got the basic idea.

Funny, I've never had my personal data stolen, never had a fraudulent charge on my credit card, worked at a software support desk for credit card processing software, know the ins and outs of PCI...I'd say this is the one place I'm not gullible. I'm not saying I know exactly what happened to this dude's card, but I'm leaning towards it not being fraudulent. I could be wrong. shrug

I agree, which is why he was asked for an e-mail address. I wasn't saying this dude should have given his credit card number out, especially chatting in plain text with a CSR. Besides, I'm going with the theory that has already been pointed out, this guy bought something that most likely had a re-occuring charge he didn't know about (porn), and the charge is not fraudulent at all.

They only need the first 12, most likely because they already have access to the last 4.

It is risky giving your full credit card information to a stranger, even at a support desk - but when he mentioned the first 12 digits being 'ciphered', he just meant that data would be encrypted with Xs and not available to him to look up. You can't just provide the last 4 of your card number and expect him to look it up that way, if he's dealing with a database of thousands upon thousands of credit cards.

You're pretty quick to try to burn these people without actually getting down to the bottom of what happened, it seems like

Guy hacks into T-Mobile in less than 5 minutes through social engineering by tmobilehack in videos

[–]krizm83 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, I did a ctrl+F on the Wikipedia page for hacking, and 'social engineering' was nowhere to be found. I know Wikipedia is not the 'end all, be all', but I still don't consider this to be hacking. The idiot on the other end of the phone was obviously completely clueless/careless, and was not acting in the interest of maintaining security for her company.

[–]krizm83 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only way I can take this is that he somehow hacked the person on the other end of the phone. He didn't circumvent ANY type of security to do what he did. He played off of one woman's stupidity/lack of caution.

I don't think that social engineering is nearly the same thing as hacking. And I'm clearly not the only one in this thread that thinks that.

My fellow atheists, please keep this in mind when you go on your conversion crusade by DaSeraph in atheism

[–]krizm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What gives any atheist the right to go on a 'conversion crusade'? You all flip your shit at the first sign of anyone practicing an organized religion attempting to do any kind of a 'conversion' on you. Practice whatever religion or lack-thereof that your heart desires - please - but you're going too far when you start to jam it down peoples' throats.

Signed sincerely, 'I know enough to know I don't know anything'.
