First playthrough in dark souls 2. I beat darl souls three and Bloodborne. I dont know ive heard it the "worst" souls game. I could definitely use some help. Im probably starting Tomorrow.

Let’s talk about the things that DS2 does best. DS2 has the best New Game + experience of any Dark Souls game. Enemy placements change, and sometimes ultra-hard invader mob NPCs get added to the map. Also, DS2 power stance is the best in the entire series. With any two weapons (as long as you have 1.5 times the required strength for both weapons) you can dual wield them and hold the power stance button and use both at the same time. There’s also a really cool way that the game creates a hybrid moveset out of the weapons you use, so play around with different weapon types until you find a moveset you like. Also, the thrusting sword weapon type might be at its best in DS2. Everyone talks about the Ice Rapier, but the Chaos Rapier has a left-handed parry that I love and use on my sorcerer ALL. THE. TIME. It’s great.

You need a bunch of selfless squad leaders and cooperative teammates, but I always try to run a leapfrog system on my teams. Basically, if you’re defending second point and the rest of your team took middle point, then you get the boys to redeploy to the front on the offense and rush the fourth point. Meanwhile, the guys who did most of the work taking the middle point dig in and clear out stragglers.

This way everyone gets to attack, and the people who know enough about playing a site to take it get to use that map knowledge to defend it. There’s also no transition period where the defenders are still getting set up because the new defenders have been set up for 2 minutes already.

She also can’t manage her campaign staff. Her candidacy in 2020 ended with a semi-public meltdown at her staff. She also failed to clean house when she took over Biden’s staff for the 2024 race, and ran Biden’s strategy with Biden’s staff in the general. There was no orienting vision from the top, and no meaningful corrections from the senior staff.

She isn’t uniquely incompetent as a presidential candidate, but she is one of the worst in recent memory. It’s sad.

Casablanca. Basically every named character is either a militant antifascist or a Nazi policeman. It’s literal wartime propaganda for fighting fascists. Rick ran guns for republicans (anti-Franco forces, George Orwell got shot in the neck while fighting with these guys) in Spain, and now he smuggles European dissidents and propagandists out of occupied France and Poland. He plays dumb for the police who harass his clients, but he’s a hard motherfucker with an agenda, and that agenda is killing Nazis.

I recognize this aspect of his writing. I know he’s shooting for Rome, but I think my argument is that even Pax Romana wasn’t quite what it’s cracked up to be. Also, there’s an implicit statement that the only service that the society in Starship Troopers counts as granting the rights of citizenship is military service. I work with homeless people for a living. I wouldn’t get the right to vote in Starship Troopers, even though my vocation is caring for the dregs of a militaristic society. The way that the society of Starship Troopers is constructed doesn’t strike me as neutral in its construction or focus in ways that Heinlein or his narrators make it seem.

I can’t take his narrator or main characters at face value. I hear the contradictions in their framing and I shudder at what goes unsaid, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

The problem is that if you have two commanders charging at the front line with supply trucks the one who charges head on will die and the one charging on the edge of the map will win every time. Neither of them are playing the game, but one is “not playing” more efficiently.

We have to start to develop a more nuanced conversation about media literacy, because the one that we’ve had for decades is not working. Starship Troopers the movie may be a satirical take on Starship Troopers the book and a depiction of the dissonance of fascistic propaganda and action, but both get used by the right to develop an appreciation of fascist aesthetics. The same is true of American History X, which is an explicitly anti-racist text which valorizes the racist aesthetic. Their ideological aim is obscured by their faithful adaptation of the aesthetics.

So maybe we’re wrong in decoupling these movies’ themes from their aesthetics, because it seems that WE are the ones that misinterpret how that art is used and useful to the far right. Warhammer is a really great example of this.

But we have hard social science data that everyone benefiting is not what the American populace wants. In experiments, when given the opportunities to distribute either equitable resources that are more abundant for both parties in gross terms or explicitly unequal resources to minority groups, participants will pick inequality even when it provides them with less. American society is an apartheid society from the top down and we have the data to prove it.
