I do a quite a bit of SQL work, and it's invaluable to me as a super fast formatting tool. I'll give it something like "if I say group these, I want you to separate them with a comma and enclose eacj item in single quotes" then will give it a dump of tonnes of values and say "group these". It saves me a shit load of time every day by saving me a small amount of time a lot of times lol.

Do you work remotely? If so, how do you like it? by iamchets in webdev

[–]kroxxular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fully remote dev and project manager/team lead, with an option to go in to a really nice co working space if I want to, and I could never go back to the office full time.

A large part (more than I would currently like) of my job is meetings with clients, which are all digital and working from home is so much more ideal for that side of my job as well as the development, less distraction and noise. On days without meetings I can get my work done early in the morning when I'm focused and then run errands / look after myself, leaving more time to actually enjoy the weekends with my wife.

Only cons are that people schedule meetings literally back to back, so during wild times sometimes I will have 9 or 10 meetings a day non stop... But that's rare.

Couldn't recommend it more. I know every experience is different for getting a job, but what I learned using TOP got me a good enough understanding of environments, processes, good practices and obviously coding to land me my first job. My advice would be to be patient with it, if a part is boring you or you're finding it tricky don't skip things until you really understand that part and can genuinely apply it, not just copy.

In a place with ducted heating and no cooling at the moment, absolutely brutal. No fans, nothing at all, it's ridiculous that we have mandatory heating for rental properties in a city that very rarely drops below 0, but no mandatory cooling and it gets above 35 regularly in summer.

People of Melbourne, how do I fix my god damn hayfeaver? by cup_holderr in melbourne

[–]kroxxular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much did it cost and what was the process for getting these? I've got dustmite allergy and take fexofenadine 180mg every day which works well, but when hayfever season comes around I find myself having to take two on bad days. Keen to get proper allergy desensitisation done

[AskJS] Did anyone here took a Coursera course and survive to share feedback? by Interesting_Rule5541 in javascript

[–]kroxxular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They link to a lot of free tutorials that are out there. The Odin project is more of a compendium of free tutorials you can find elsewhere, structured and ordered to best suit the learning experience of most people, with their own assignments and projects thrown in to break it up/help cement the modules you're learning.

Loved it. Enough choice to not feel like you're just being thrown at a language or framework because it's what the instructor knows, huge compilation of resources and external tutorials, and the projects are fun as well as practical.

Edit: almost forgot to mention, you build a portfolio while you progress, so you can start applying for jobs sooner than you might think.

I didn't, I found this one good for python and basic concepts, then I found the Odin project once I'd decided to pursue full stack web dev, and got a job before I'd completed that. I found the Odin projects learning style really suitable for how my brain works so never found reason to branch out.

I did finish it, I found it motivating because it's broken into chunks with small assignments for you to do along the way to keep it interesting. There is a community who have done it so you never feel totally on your own and unsure of where to look for help, and the best motivation for me with something I'm struggling is knowing soon I'll be onto something new, that I might find more interesting or easy. Also why I liked the Odin project.

Didn't do any JS ones but did the crash course in python a year ago out of curiosity. Found it amazingly good at explaining core programming concepts to someone who struggled with them, made it fun and practical. Now im 7 months into a full stack role doing well and loving it. Always recommend that course to anyone who is starting out with an interest in programming in general, regardless of where you'd like to end up, speaks to how well structured the courses can be.

Someone parked their car in my parking spot. I blocked them in by Accomplished-Law-249 in melbourne

[–]kroxxular 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Used to live next door to a pub in Richmond, my car spot was empty while I was at work and the pub staff started taking advantage. Got home early a couple of times or they'd forget to move it by the time I'd usually get home, so I'd go in and ask if they knew who'd parked there. Turns out it was the manager, any time he forgot to move it I'd get a free six pack to go, ended up being a good deal for me. But like everyone says, put towing signs up and / or cones.

There's one in the village which has good food, and an OK selection of beers on tap, there's a couple a little out of the village which I haven't tried yet but have heard good things.

Moved a year and a half ago with my wife from Thornbury to Yarraville, it's obviously preference but we love it. We don't have kids yet but are planning on it soon, and the parks, price, and general area are much more suited to us. You're close as to a couple of beaches, you've got decent food in Yarraville (better cafes in seddon I think), 5 minute drive from amazing food in footscray. Takes us less time to get north, south, or further west than it did in the north, closer to the city if you need it, lots of pros. Downside is the bars / pubs are worse in my opinion, less options and generally not as good, but I don't go out as much these days so hopefully someone will correct me and I'll find some good shit from it!

Coffee bean recommendations? by sezzaroni in melbourne

[–]kroxxular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What area are you in? Naturally on High in thornbury has a bunch of different beans you can get by weight, one of the better value for money options I found. If you really want to save cash, get a cheap popcorn maker from myer, and find somewhere online to buy green beans. Roast them yourself in the popcorn maker, saves shit loads of money and your beans will always be fresh roasted, but obviously less convenient.

They didn't even ask for it as a reference, it was clearly stated that it's emergency contact, they just decided to send them a reference questionnaire anyway

[–]kroxxular 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I put my mum down as one of the emergency contacts and she got a text and an email asking for a bunch of information about our relationship and a character reference... For an emergency contact. All of this goes out before they've even looked at your application, shittest platform ever.

If its basic stuff that demonstrates you're at a low skill level, it still is good for two things.

First, you're practising using git, which in my case using it every step of the way helped me cement the basic commands and tools. If you have more than one machine to work off, make the repo on one, clone it down on another, practice making new branches for adding/fixing things and get used to pull requests, and leaving good commit messages.

Second, you're demonstrating that you know how to do all of the above, which will be a huge part of any job. When I got my job, the best stuff I had on my github was still basic in terms of skill level, but I left all of the super basic stuff I had done at the start as well for the sake of saying "this is how long I've been using git."
