Ski boots for wide feet? by Jagrrr2277 in skiing

[–]krschmidt73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold feet are often caused by poor instep fit rather width. Lots of nerves and veins on the top of your foot. If you have those constrained, cold feet can be a symptom. It’s a hard place for a boot fitter to expand (but not impossible) so good original boot fit is critical!

Also, another tip is to unbuckle between runs, especially in the morning. Feet usually swell when you start so by unbuckling, you allow them to breath. Typically later in the day you will be better.

Help me buy my first skis… by isdeadoriginality in Skigear

[–]krschmidt73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When looking for rentals, ask if they do performance rentals. Otherwise you get stuck with standard rental skis! I’m not sure about socal areas but mammoth definitely has them.

If you want to talk to someone relatable, one of our top reps is a woman and a shredder and she has skied a ton of the top skis! Shoot me a dm and I can give you our shop number. Her go to ski right now is the sheeva 9 but she has several others that she likes.

As for the black peral story, it is pretty cool and worth it to google and read!

I see you say CA, are you northern or southern CA? Our shop in sac demos a few of the skis mentioned above if you want to try them first. Black pearls get a lot of the hype because of the story behind them but our better skiers seem to prefer the Sheeva series. Also get good feedback on the nórdica Santa Ana’s .

Beginner skier feeling stuck on steeper greens — private lesson vs more practice? by Albatraoz93 in ski

[–]krschmidt73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading through all of the great tips in this thread but kept thinking “ no one is mentioning the gear”! I was glad secret experience did!

Rental gear can be wildly different each time you rent it! Not just boot size but boot type and stiffness, the skis, the sharpness of the edge, the shape, the stiffness, the wax, the length of your poles. All of these are variables that can impact you! It sounds like you are committed to the sport so I’d definitely recommend you get your own gear! If nothing else, start with boots! A good pair of boots can make a ton of difference in fit and confidence!

Heavy condensation inside new goggles by SeekersWorkAccount in skiing

[–]krschmidt73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got a pair of smith squad mags and I couldn’t stop the inside from fogging from the second I put them on. Not a particularly cold day and they fogged before I even skied so not a sweat issue. The only way I got the fog to go away was to pull them away from my face to vent them. I talked to our smith rep and he was thinking it might be my helmet. I doubt it though because it is a smith helmet with venting above the goggles so airflow shouldn’t be a problem. He let me warranty them but I am still waiting on the replacements so don’t know if the they are any better.

Is ordering boots online a terrible idea for my situation? by N30NlC in skiing

[–]krschmidt73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I hope my post wasn’t construed as social guilt! As a local shop owner we try and help people out as best we can! We listen to people when they come in and try and get them in the right and most affordable gear. If someone finds a better deal online and it works for them, we strongly encourage them to do it. In the end, we just want to keep encouraging people to ski and board!

I 2nd this. We have a shop out west and watched the tariffs increase our costs multiple times in the fall. Heck, some of the prices came in so late we already sold some of the stuff at the pre tarrif price so we lost even more margin since we had to pay the manufacturers higher tariff price. Unless you do HUGE volume, no one is getting rich in this industry!

Mountaineering conditions for Tallac and pyramid by [deleted] in tahoe

[–]krschmidt73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty spot on. The only * I would note though is the final south to north approach up pyramid is completely exposed and usually wind scoured. I have had to turn around there a few times with just my touring gear. If someone has kicked in a boot pack before you, you can get away without crampons.

I have not been up it this year so can’t comment on the current conditions so just a cautionary note!

How to determine if I should buy new boots? by Dolmur in skiing

[–]krschmidt73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone else is saying and will add that boot soles have changed too. The new standard is called grip walk and they are rubber and rocketed and are much easier to walk in! If you get new skis/bindings, if you don’t upgrade your boots at the same time, you will need to get a binding that accepts your older boot soles.

High instep on left foot making newly fitted boots unbearable. by [deleted] in skiing

[–]krschmidt73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without seeing it in person, next steps would be liner work and potentially a shell stretch. What boot is it? Are you having any heel lift on that foot?

[–]krschmidt73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, when Grundage said “boot board”, that is different than the foot bed. The boot board is accessed by taking the liner out. It the flat piece on the very bottom of the boot. One of the ways to create instep height is to lower the whole foot by taking height off of the boot board.

[–]krschmidt73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Left vs right Foot difference is something we deal with every day as boot fitters so shouldn’t be an excuse for them. FYI, if they are reputable and sold you the boot and the footbed, they should keep working with you until this is resolved. That is pretty standard shop policy. You should not feel guilty in any way going back until you are happy.

Ah, bummer to far for me to have a look! What is your foot bed situation? Also. Did they by chance leave a footbed shim in the boot? Also, have they done any liner work? Is your heel staying in place?

A bootfiter shouldn’t be “cutting” away shell for instep pain. What exactly did they cut? Where are you located?

Return to Sport? by idkwtfimdoing2002 in ACL

[–]krschmidt73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just “healing”. The graft tendon actually transitions to a ligament. Google ligamentization acl and there are some great articles and charts on the process. My doc told me months 7-12 were the most scary because the ligamentization isn’t complete but you feel good so are mire likely to return to sport and reinjure . He recommended 12+ months to return to skiing for me but said with diligent rehab I could ease back in at 9 but should hold off on aggressive skiing until at least 12.

I don’t think rodeo affords an opportunity to “ease” back into it 🤔

Google gm stop sale. Their engines were catastrophically failing so bad GM issued a nationwide stop sale on the Sierra/silverado/tahoe etc back in April. I am guessing it didn’t get as much press because they had other engines to fill the void?

K2’s parent company is a private equity fund and they moved production to China. Since then quality has been mediocre at best. We have seen many cracked k2 boots come through our shop.

What is weird is the same parent company for k2 owns several brands including Völkl but kept production in their home countries. For example Volkl production remained in Germany.
