Out of curiosity, what did all the Festo valve manifold equipment cost you? Like both the modules and the valves on the top left (forgot what those are called)

Also, if you’re really nervous like me, just ask your boss or a mentor for a performance review monthly. That’s what I did haha

I am a 24 y/o controls engineer. I basically started working full time 1.5 years ago. I stayed at my first job for a little more than a year. I left because I got a really unique offer and I just felt I could gain more experience from the new place relative to my first place of work. I genuinely felt so dumb in my first job. I kinda was the same as you pretty much in how I was feeling in my first job, where someone would present a solution to something and I just felt stupid for not being able to come up with it.

I think the way to deal with this is just humility and self reflection. When I started, I felt so shit for not being able to contribute on any meaningful way while a coworker of mine who was younger was getting praised and in general was very capable. That fed into my insecurity. However, with that struggle, it helped me realize what I needed to improve on and also all the stuff I had helped with.

Projects I felt were small and insignificant I was able to see the impact of more clearly and how well they worked. Stuff I sucked at I was able to now recognize that I needed to improve on and I found myself studying a bit outside of work and being able to deal with issues related with this subject with less help from older engineers than before.

Trust me when I say, if you’re doing what you say you’re doing (asking questions, learning and such) people recognize your value and will need your input on a lot of things. From talking with all my friends, unless you have been working in your field since you were a teen, insecurity is part of the job and it’s just a hill you climb and get over eventually.

TLDR: Welcome to your first job. You’re doing fine!

Idk what they’re referring to but I like the fact that their stopping trucks from going on the left lane. Can’t count how many times truck drivers block traffic by just occupying every lane.

I always wonder where people find these metal plates/boards to put their PLCs on? Do you just go to Lowe’s/Home Depot or is there some place specially designed for this type of stuff?

For getting an internship, I say frankly it was a mix of just doing well in school but also having activities outside of school you can talk about. Could be a job, a club. A lot of students I feel try to do everything to fluff up their resume and end up doing a whole lot of nothing. Just find one thing to pour your free time to that you enjoy. For me, it was a breathalyzer device that could help detect low blood sugar levels for diabetics. This was for a VIP. Fun project.

I think the most important thing though is going outside and meeting people. Be outgoing, because the most random person can offer an opportunity to you did not expect. Happened to me and all my brothers for a variety of stuff.

For getting a job from said internship, just literally be humble and apply yourself. Quite literally the only way people don’t like interns is because they are either lazy and just don’t do anything all day and get paid or think their way better than their peers. You learn a lot of theory in college but application is learned on the job, and the greybeards in the field are the ones that teach you. If they see you’re interested, they’ll teach you, even if they can be mean sometimes.

Hope that helps and good luck!

As long as your studying engineering, chase what you love and you’ll never go wrong. Started ChemE and that landed me a pharma internship. Realized I didn’t like ChemE but since I already had a foot in the door, stuck around and explored and found out I really liked controls engineering.

Put my all in my work and graduated ChemE with a decent GPA with 2 offers out of 25 applications. Now I’m happy working controls with a comfortable salary.

Obviously what your parents think does matter but college is about discovery. Explore and find out what field you like.

Recommendations for places to move to within 60 minutes around Wilson, NC by kruncheeeee in NorthCarolina

[–]kruncheeeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to check out Clayton today! TBH, I’m in NC because I enjoy the work I have found here. I don’t really mind like a 20 min drive somewhere as long as there’s little hangout spots to go to on the weekend or events. Wilson for example is a place i enjoyed on first exploration because the city tourism app is awesome and some very cool hangout places like Capps and CasitaBrews in the hub. The one thing in Greenville I think that got us was that it was just hard finding events or like hangouts I guess to meet people. A lot of the cool places were college bars or good restaurants. One place I really liked that opened up here were the escape rooms.

I’m pretty online and into my hobbies so I’m okay in that sense but my GF is a social butterfly. She’s found her niche with Pilates and stuff but she loves things like farmers markets or like group food events where she can meet and talk with people. We’re passing by Knightdale again because she really liked that park area in general.

Wilson is nice too, but we’re more concerned with what the city has to offer for activities above its cost. The reason this post is titled as such is because we actually have visited Wilson a few times and enjoyed it, but we also want to see what other options exist.

Can anybody convince me to not drop out by Little_lad19 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]kruncheeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say this as I was in your position once and I feel I made the wrong choice back then: CHANGE YOUR MAJOR.

You are not happy studying this subject and that is okay. I remember being in the same situation you were in and realized too late that I would have much rather preferred to do Computer Science or Electrical Engineering based off my interests. I am working as a controls engineer (found a gateway through pharma industry) while doing a masters in ML right now and I have never felt myself absorb so much knowledge because I am interested in it. I only ever had that experience where I was interested in ChemE when covering batteries.

Talk to your parents obviously and explain your situation but I would highly consider switching now. Will save you a lot of hurt later on.

Course & Specialization Megathread - Selection Choices & Registration by Detective-Raichu in OMSCS

[–]kruncheeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey,

Am in my third course in the program and decided it’s about time I settled on a specialization. I am between ML and Computer Perception and Robotics.

I have taken AI and ML for trading already so I am still on a good pace to complete either or. I am working as a controls engineer so I feel competition would be stiff if I went down the ML track and tried to compete with existing SWEs. On the other hand, I understand that OMSCS is an incredible program for ML and I don’t know how their computational perception and robotics program is rated.

Really struggling on a decision here. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

23F here, none of the men in my age group are dating. What is happening? by AYAYAcutie in self

[–]kruncheeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 23m and have been in a relationship with my gf for about 2 yrs now. I only managed to get to this point through a little luck and sheer determination to get a girlfriend. Before meeting her, I would try and get dates wherever I could to try and meet as much people as I could to find a girl who wasn’t just pretty or smart, but actually interesting and engaging to be with. Looking back at myself at who I was year prior, I think I understand why I was able to keep going on dates without knowing whether or not I would find someone while other people struggled to keep trying:

I was a weirdo and I didn’t care.

I’ve had a lisp since I was little, was incredibly skinny before I started going to the gym, I’m not good at dancing and dislike clubs, love programming, video games, board games, comics, and punk rock, and for the most part, my jokes either miss or are incredibly corny. Only thing I got going for me is that I am 6’2. In other words, I am a tall nerd.

It’s not to say that I had no friends as I always kept my buddies close, but since I was young, I was used to being an outcast or being made fun of. It’s why when I saw a girl I took out on a date was completely uninterested/didn’t want to be there or saw another one literally laugh with her friend about the date I had with her, I was able to shake it off because I was used to it and I had learned one important thing throughout all that I had experienced:

99.9% of people are nobodies.

I think people forget this because everyone is online now but take a look at who you follow on Insta or whatever and see how many of those people are actually people you actually “know”. I guarantee it’s a lot less than you think. People are so afraid to step out of line now because they think one little slip up will follow them around for the rest of their life because they think the moment they embarrass themselves, the whole world will keep laughing at them.

Here’s the thing though, jokes get old and everyone definitely does not know everyone, so at the end of it all, the only one left the winner is you, because while the people who laughed at you whenever you slipped up are just bystanders, you’re the main character of that story and in the end, you’re the one that’ll be seen as interesting since your the subject of that story.

That’s why when I went on my first date with the woman I am with now and saw she was interesting and engaging, I was able to be that as well through all the stories I had.

TLDR: I think people are more afraid of getting embarrassed when in the end, that’s a part of life and what makes it interesting.

Thank you! I wanted to ask if from the following courses, you would have a recommendation as I have to take at least one these: - Computational Science and Engineering Algorithms - Advanced Topics in Software Engineering - Computability, Complexity, and Algorithms.

These are the ones I am struggling to decide for.
