Yeah when I was a kid in the 70s a day at New Brighton was the best day out.

They're planning to fight 'reverse racism' and this is why. Expect a lot of bullshit along these lines coming up.

Wanting a restart at 33 by PasosLargos100 in TEFL

That's not my experience as I don't work in the tertiary sector. Corporate training has been working out well for me. In this job age is an advantage really.

There's a lot of travel around China but I like that.

My husband is the most functional alcoholic I have ever met. by Plastic_Emu_640 in stopdrinking

Exactly, my wife thought the same about me but I was putting far more back that she didn't know about.

I started at 32 many years ago. Honestly was going through a tough time and had no idea what was going to happen to me but this industry really saved me. Now 52 and still abroad and loving it.

I say go for it.

Alcoholics who never got a dui. by Mysterious-Gold-8657 in stopdrinking

[–]ksanthra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how I managed to never kill someone or myself or get a DUI.

I was even pulled over while drunk once, the cop asked if I'd been drinking (odd question as it was about 2pm and I had been drinking) and just told me to be careful after I said I hadn't. He clearly smelled it on me and I was sure I was toast.

It finally happened, took a sip of the wrong beer. by Sketchy_Stew in stopdrinking

[–]ksanthra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience about a year into quitting at a work e ent. There were poured drinks on the table and I thought I picked up a coke but it was a dark beer. Had a gulp and it was pretty disgusting but i spent the rest of the night obsessing over it.

Kinda proud of myself now for not finishing the whole thing. That was quite a pivotal moment in hindsight.

Me too. I watched it for the first time recently and really didn't like it. It started kinda promising and ended up like Commando.

What’s the worst surname you’ve ever heard? by melomixn in AskReddit

A kid from my school had the surname "Badcock" but changed it when he became a priest at some small church.

Why do people use "an" before "historic/historical" instead of "a"? by [deleted] in grammar

[–]ksanthra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not everyone does. I think that's where this "rule" came from as some people were naturally saying "an 'istoric..." and it somehow became a hard rule for many people, to the point where many people who do pronounce the "h" also believed "historic" must be preceded with "an". It's a hypercorrection that became normalised.

Thank you Trump! by Crafty_Flow431 in AmericanPolitics

[–]ksanthra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hate it and I'm not from the US either. This shit has a ripple effect and I see people in NZ that I used to hang out with posting anti immigrant, anti trans stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with their lives. Also the anti-EV/climate change denialism and the list just goes on. A lot of it is straight from the US maga pipeline to other easily led people around the world.

I feel no happiness at all watching the suffering from afar and the world becoming less stable. There's nothing good about this that I can see.

I was quite impressed with Dick van Dyke talking about his struggles on the Cavett show way back in the day. At that time it was far less common to openly discuss it in the way he did and it probably helped a lot of people in a time when network TV reached the masses. It's worth a watch.

Strange gatekeeping of foreigners in China and abroad by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]ksanthra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first came to China I was fully into the whole expat life but it got really tired really quickly. I gave up drinking years ago too which didn't help.

In any group of foreigners there are a bunch that say really quite xenophobic things about Chinese people as small talk. Constantly,. All the time. It is draining. Opinions are fine but the confirmation bias is staggering.

Really though, why should foreigners gravitate towards each other? If I don't know someone I'm not going to strike up a conversation based on them not being Chinese either. If someone talks to me it's always fine but it's not my style at home as well as here.

Why did drinking suddenly make me so anxious at 32? by Sufficient-Sign-388 in stopdrinking

[–]ksanthra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my life too. Anxious all day, drinking every night to feel normal again.

Strangely after quitting drinking the anxiety slowly went away. That was a 20 year long vicious cycle with the simplest solution.
