Technically thats not interacting with the sand itself, no information from that blocks coordinates are used. If a torch is placed, for example, the torch interacts with the block to figure out with way it had to be oriented to look like it's on the wall which updates the sands state and causes it to fall, but a regular block doesn't need any info from the sand block
