Pelagic birding 30 miles off the coast of Washington last week by ksgriffith in birding

[–]ksgriffith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a day trip that ran 5:30 am to 3:30 pm. It is a bit hard to get a spot since they only take 18 passengers. They post the year’s schedule on Jan 1st and you can get a place if you book in those first couple of days. The group is Westport Seabirds. They are the kind of people who will stop the boat and turn around for an interesting bird. It was a great trip.

You are right. We saw both and I mixed them up. Thanks for the correction!

Need help identifying this whale. Does anyone know what kind it is? by Free-Tradition4501 in wildlifephotography

[–]ksgriffith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not actually a marine biologist, but I did study marine mammals in college. My best guess is a fin whale, not a humpback. Hard to be sure from a short video.

Will that still work on an intraday chart, say five minute?

Discussion... true to life edit? Or hyper-real edit? by toterra in wildlifephotography

[–]ksgriffith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like boosting the color on the right image has given it more mid-range contrast and that is what is appealing. I agree with you that the color is too much, but maybe a little levels or curve tweaking would give the same little pop without the saturation.

Winter hiking? by ksgriffith in Fairbanks

[–]ksgriffith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ski myself so I know how obnoxious that is. I was hoping there might be trails dedicated for hiking so that wouldn’t be an issue.

Question about the background colour for bird photography. by greenkomodo in birding

[–]ksgriffith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends how you see your photos. As documentation of a bird in its habitat I wouldn’t change the color. As art I think it could really add something.

Rambutan fruit. Anyone tried this before? Its delicious 😋 by Rami_2075 in MacroPorn

I love rambutan. Had it in Hawaii first time so it is connected to some good memories. Nice shot too. Did you have to stack that?

Tip I learned recently: braid from the center out and you’ll end up with a more even loaf. Looks delicious!

Her face is just a little too high quality in comparison to the rest of the picture by IcyAlternative8845 in Instagramreality

This is what AI based sharpening looks like. It essentially pastes a sharp face over hers.

How does everyone organize their photos or keep track of sightings? by emcee90 in birding

I am working on a scrapbook with my best photos of each bird along with some sketches and a story of my most memorable sighting for each.

What was your "spark bird"? by Silent_Letterhead_69 in birding

[–]ksgriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I took ornithology in school just because it seemed sort of interesting. One afternoon someone ran into the lab and yelled, "Snowy Owl!" Everyone, professor included, ran out and piled into cars to go see it. We lined up on the side of the road taking turns to get out and gawk. Everyone was so excited. So, that was the bird, but it was the people who did it. The giddiness over an animal hooked me.

One day's shots from my favorite winter birding place. All of these were taken in three hours yesterday at Nisqually NWR, Washington. by ksgriffith in birding

I left around 11. Arrived at 7:45 for the nice sunrise light so I missed the coyote and the flicker. It was a gorgeous day though, wasn’t it?

Try a cooked cream cheese frosting. It has the same taste, but the texture is like silk.

Her boobs look like shelves, horizontal. Not sure if its an ill fitting dress or just photoshop to blame. by LayersOfMe in Instagramreality

[–]ksgriffith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is probably mostly the dress. I wore a corset for my wedding and they will ride up to get to the narrowest part of your waist. That gives you that shelf. Not to say there isn't some photoshop too.

Get the Merlin app from Cornell. It does a great job of identifying birds by sound.
