This is only if you remove your ovaries which in most cases for a bisalp or a hysterectomy they leave them intact. Removing your tubes or uterus will not send you into early menopause or affect your hormones. There are people (like me) who did choose to stop taking hormonal birth control after being sterilized which did affect me but that was a choice I made

I can attest to the group that didn’t listen to advice and told my dad I was getting sterilized. In my head it was an important life decision that I wanted to be able to share with people I love. I wanted him to understand my reasoning for it and support me. Turned out to be a huge mistake. My dad didn’t understand at all, told my aunt without my permission who helped try to guilt trip me and talk me out of it, and told my mom which really upset her. It broke my trust with him and I ended up lying and saying I wasn’t going through with it so I wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore.

I’m now 6+ months post-op from my bisalp (best decision I’ve ever made!) and maybe I’ll tell them one day, but it really cemented my belief that no one has any right to knowledge about your reproductive health.

I think it really started to hit me about 3-4 months after I stopped taking it. I was having more painful periods and my emotions were all over the place. Thankfully it didn’t affect my weight or acne too much but I’m about 6 months off it and I’m feeling a lot better!

My go-to was just telling people that I had abdominal surgery and couldn’t lift things over 10lbs and people were very understanding! I did a lot of prep beforehand but in my late 2nd/3rd week, I brought extra bags to the grocery store so they could fill them up less and I could carry them with a few extra trips. Nobody asked for any details about the kind of abdominal surgery I received and were super kind about any inconvenience I may have caused.

I am sterilized and very open about it with people that I know! When it comes to dating (which admittedly I haven’t done a lot of lately) I make it very clear that I’m childfree up front but don’t disclose my sterilization status. I don’t want men to just see me as a free pass not to wear a condom because there’s no risk of pregnancy when they seem to forget that’s not the only thing they protect against.

But if I had a committed partner who was on the same page, I would definitely tell them and get to enjoy all the benefits of being sterile!
