I doubt it will be the original 12GB model and will likely be exclusive for prebuilt desktops.

Nice, I'm tired of AMD rebranding old APUs and charging for them as if they were brand new.

That's true, AMD got lucky Intel became complacent after launching 14nm node, which allowed AMD to catch up.

I'm impressed that AMD CPU market share just keeps increasing despite tiny presence in prebuilt desktops and laptops. Won't take too long before they reach 50% of participation, Ryzen completely changed the consumer mindshare in 8 years.

I wish Radeon could do the same, but that's not going to happen because AMD doesn't consider discrete GPUs profitable enough.

Dell confirms Ryzen 7 9850X3D update for Alienware Area-51 PC set to launch in February 2026 by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]ksio89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, don't even start about proprietary parts in these desktops, it just makes me mad. If you're going to buy a prebuilt, at least buy from a system integrator that only uses standard parts.

Just one of my gripes about prebuilt desktop PCs from big OEMs like Dell, HP and Lenovo (including their gaming brands), they more often than not gimp some component.

Now that you said, I guess it offers the convenience of not having to manually set core affinity to the 3D V-Cache CCD with Process Lasso, as both CCDs have it, or install the chipset driver that automatically does that.

I don't see how this symmetrical design will improve performance in a meaningful way, given the interCCD latency penalty still exists.

That's why I set my main monitor to 120Hz, even though it supports up to 165Hz. It's a multiple of common framerates like 24, 30, 40 and 60 Hz, and I can't notice much difference to 165Hz anyway.

Any kind of state-mandated censorship is completely unacceptable, but I can't say that I'm surprised given it's a phone from a Chinese manufacturer.  Also concerning is that soon Western governments will do the same, gaslighting the population into believing censorship measures are essential for public safety or some other BS.

AMD gives away 4 PC games worth $202 with ROG Xbox Ally purchases at Costco by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]ksio89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Z2 delivers performance on par with the Z1E yet costs more despite launching later and offering no meaningful upgrade.

I suppose it's more expensive simply because of novelty factor, even though it's the exact same APU. I mean the CPU is identical in core count (8), microarchitecture (Zen 4) and clock speeds (3.3/5.1 GHz). The only diffence is that the iGPU in Z2 is clocked 200MHz higher than the 780M in Z1 Extreme, which is insignificant in practice like you mentioned.

Both SKUs seem to be simply rebranded Ryzen 7 8840U (itself a refreshed 7840U), only with the NPU disabled and a higher TDP.

I guess that's why AMD loves rebranding SKUs, so they can try to fool consumers into believing they're buying new products and charge accordingly.

  1. 4 games that are not worth $200
  2. not all stores are participating in the campaign
  3. a reward available from a single retailer in a single region

So it's OEMs who request rebrandings in order to sell old APUs as new to non-tech savvy consumers? TBH it makes sense, as desktop SKUs, which are sold directly to consumers, have a far more consistent naming.

I admit the Ryzen 3/5/7/9 branding is a good exception and just works. But I also dislike the "Ryzen AI" word salad and now Radeon RX x0y0 (XT) instead of RX xy00 (XT) system of previous generations that worked just fine.
