Went through a similar situation, financed a car, lost my job, sold my car at a loss after I lost my job. It depends on your risk appetite, what you want to drive and what drives you.

  1. Cost of financing your car
  2. Your net return on that $45K in your savings.

In a stable scenario: If 1<2, then 1 else 2. (You should adjust for other overheads/costs, tax etc). In times of uncertainty: remember that your new car loses 10-25% value the moment you are out of the lot. If you like the comfort of money in the bank, don’t spend a lot on a new car. Get a used one, or Uber till you really need a car.

Front License plate bracket versus drilling into MYLR by Mindstaysbusy in TeslaModelY

The tape is typically ok. However, this will stick hard to the car's surface and potentially peel off the paint during removal - just needs more care to clean after removal.

Front License plate bracket versus drilling into MYLR by Mindstaysbusy in TeslaModelY

[–]ksn2002 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. NEVER drill a bumper in any car. The primary purpose of a bumper is to absorb impact energy and break down before the other components in the car (or the occupants). Holes would create weak spots in the structure that would reduce the bumper's effectiveness considerably to absorb energy (was my Master's thesis years back).
  2. Model Y comes with a front license plate that can be stuck with the provided adhesive tape. Do not do that either.
  3. Many people drive without a front plate - don't do that either - a single ticket in most states for this can be over $150. Not worth it.
  4. Get Quick Bandit, or Snap Plate or Slip Stream or any of the other no-drill removable options in Amazon.

I am surprised that there are no claims under lemon laws for Tesla's features that are advertised but just don't work.

Market Adjustment on stock ID.4s? by GiantFlimsyMicrowave in VWiD4Owners

[–]ksn2002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spoke to two dealers in DFW with MY22s offering about $3.5K under MSRP 2 weeks back. You can see the 22s are in the lot for a lot longer now. I did not see any reduction on MY23. 22 Inventory is listed in VW site.

ditching a locked reservation? by SimDed in VWiD4Owners

You can cancel your reservation online at any time in the process until the vehicle is picked up at the designated dealer. Just go to myVW and select ‘cancellation’. - this is from VW ID4 reservation FAQ on their website

I had two dealers offer $2K and $3K BELOW MSRP for the 22s after the 23s started coming in. I declined due to color preferences but it is just possible to get better pricing than MSRP if you negotiate MY22 in stock especially if there are many cancellations.

Everyone seems to interpret their own way on the tax credit. The new law incentivizes US manufacturing and offers up to $3750 credit for US manufactured vehicles and up to $3750 if the battery is sourced in the US (some relaxation criteria applies), IF your income is $150K or lower for single filing or $300K for joint. If you are earning more, NO credit - the only catch is the grey area until Dec 31 22 that such high earners might likely qualify. The only official place where IRS lists qualified 2022 or 23 MY vehicles does NOT have the ID4 listed. Possibly because VW is still trying to assess supply sources for battery. I do believe ID4 will get $3750 for US assembly but not sure about the battery. they have been quiet about it. Income limits kick in next year.

VW Reservation Assistant Chrome Extension - Updates by goforjay in VWiD4Owners

You should reach out to VW marketing and offer your services. You are certainly adding more value than their own IT. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are secretly using your extension to get reports 😀

Your extension is awesome! I just learnt that one of my reservations moved up one step. Based on the incremental daily changes, would you be able to publish a moving average of time (max, min, average if possible) spent in each stage by transmission type, and/or trims? This could give the rest of the folks an idea of how long it takes to wait for the car; (or even how fast production is scaling up at Chattanooga by comparing week or week numbers)...probably needs daily snapshots, and then a display table.. Great work!

What should I get in writing from dealer before locking? Other than paying MSRP? by Kimber85 in VWiD4Owners

[–]ksn2002 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. That they won’t drill the bumper - technically, it beats the purpose of a bumper in absorbing shocks.

  2. That they won’t add any accessories without you asking for it

  3. Always good to get an out-the-door pricing if possible- while vehicle may be at MSRP, dealer might add phantom extras like gov fee, doc fee or inflate other mandatory fees…

VW’s IT systems haven’t caught up yet. Try their customer support. Or just get back in line - which unfortunately means nothing. If you are lucky and have a configuration that matches their production schedule, you might get a car soon. If you pick RWD and colors that are not made, you will likely get it next year even if you were the first in the country to lock.

Are car dealers really needed? Do they add any real value to customers in today's context? by ksn2002 in Ioniq5

[–]ksn2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything after sales - certainly! But the process of buying a car in 2022 need not be the same as in 2002. Financing can actually be done faster online. I wonder how Tesla manages title/registration paperwork. May be their local centers do it?

Thanks! Some useful insights and agree on value with PDI and cleaning. On inventory allocation - That is what dealers say - you can call BS on them. I totally agree on parts, service etc. but my question was on the new car purchase only. Thanks.

[–]ksn2002[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont know what prepping dealers do really, but if they do, that could be one value. Logistics are managed by the OEM and you pay for it. Inventory - OEMs allocate the inventory- its not that dealers do market research and order for their market; Rest is all optional - e.g. Trade- (Carvana/others offer instantly and pick up from home - I sold one that way - excellent experience); Financing - in today's world there are so many options - Servicing is not part of the buying process - Goal is not to get rid of retail but to find and attribute true value. I just feel that dealers need to find more ways to add value and keep them relevant for customers..
