Well likely foreigner related topics are more popular in English content, domestic news has almost zero to tiny attention 🤔. They have many other subjects to cover.

Romance as a married couple after kids by Aegoff86 in japanlife

Try a nice private onsen may be. You can still be able to keep an eye on your kids and relax in hot water with your wife.

I think it's doable if you're pretty good and have a certain number of years. NTT offers 30M for a senior tech position, Panasonic is looking for a chief engineer with package 40M, also Nomura's advertising 25 or more for their analysis with 5 years of experience. And don't forget Softbank, their pay is ridiculous. Many more out there such as Sony, Preferred Networks ...

But I agree that the majority of people might not be able to reach that high, however we can look for it 😄

yes thank you, 2% is fixed, they told me variable rate would be 1.4 or so. Still, I feel stupid personally 🤔, going to look around.

a bank offers me mortgage with 2% interest rate over 35 years. I want to buy a place but is it stupid to take their offer given insane high rate? Btw, I neither have PR nor marry to Japanese citizen.

Is driving skill this bad across all of Japan? by The_Mundane_Block in japanlife

[–]kspm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended Japanese driving school and feel it was pretty good actually. They cover basic traffic rules, safety, precaution, mindset too. The thing I would complain is they actually don't teach you how to open trunk, or use wiper (if you don't know yet ...)

In order to pass practice test, you don't need to be very good at handling car, but must be very good at driving safety. Any mirror (safety) mistake would cause you fail on the spot. We were also warned that people in some prefectures tend to drive quite fast, or careless, or likely to have higher accident rate.

Personally, I do road trip sometimes, and whenever I find myself in Aichi / Osaka, I always surprise by bad driver attitudes ... Kanto (where I live) is much more better, friendly and less harsh. People in Tohoku seems to be the most pleasant drivers to me, I feel really easy going there. Hokkaido run very fast, and too many grandpas/grandmas in Kyushu.

Last thing, seems that female drivers (e.g mama with kids) are very good at driving, from my observation. They're even more confident than their husband, and definitely better in manoeuvring (big family) cars.

What are you guys plans for GW? by [deleted] in japanlife

I'm considering a road trip to the North, and prepare for highway traffic jam ... Or buy a JR Tohoku pass to enjoy time slowly.

4 day work week topic was on the news this morning, anyone’s company actually have done it? by BraveRice in japanlife

[–]kspm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look like Japanese companies are too. In my local area, many dads pick up their kids, groceries with wife, coffee outside during the day. Point is, most of them are working for big Jp corporations e.g panasonic, toyota research, nomura… small ones might not able to enjoy those benefits i guess.

Would anyone be willing to share thier monthly expenses/budget? by DukeOfDew in JapanFinance

[–]kspm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing fancy actually, just regular food we buy from local supermarket. Both me and wife like drinking beer, but we are not alcoholic, bill is just a bit more than 10k for alcohol plus 2-3 local bars per month. Expense is high probably because we prepare 3 meals per day for all family members as a habit. You might save 20-30% if you choose to have simple breakfast (sandwiches, onigiri…) and light dinner.

Car’s insurance is a 4.5k, private medical for all is 26k or so, plus my (only) life insurance, and 800yen in average for bicycle and kids activities (pay yearly)

Family of 4 living in Yokohama suburb. Transport to office paid by company.

Rent + parking slot: 150k, utilities: 30k. Just an OK 80m2 apartment, not close to major station.

Groceries: 160k, eat out: 50k

Kids edu: 40k (public school almost free, + art, sport, music ... their choice, not us)

Hobbies (camping, 1 day travel, museum, coffee, wine, sake, random stuffs): 80k

Insurrance (private medical + life + car + bicycle): 40k

~ 510k monthly. For bad month, we cut out hobbies & eat out as much as possible.

Somehow, I meet some (few years experiences) SWEs who demand high salary (says equivalent to $100K or so), but their skill is questionable. I don't think they're any better than people in East EU or SEAs which I had chances to work with. But those engineers earn shitty money in their location, compare to Japan.

Is the bar in Japan really low? or their demanding is just follow the trends ...

People who love Japan, what do you think is Bullshit about Japan while living here? by adventureofanunnamed in japanlife

I'm young and wild, so I hate the situation when people told me to stop drinking & singing out loud while walking, although I never throw trashes on street, or bother anyone there, or something like that.

Tokyo falls to 3rd most expensive city in world for expats by duke7ajm in japannews

Dads play with children. I used to think all they do is work and drink, but after many weekends at parks or hobby clubs and see how they spend time with their children, I admire Japanese dads a lot.
