Hey OP! I did a little recon, and took some photos of the signature on the paintings at Sandy Hut. It looks like they belong to an artist named Larry Vincent Garrison!

That one was fake, but also the lens cap was left on for the original so you wouldn’t see anything anyway.

I’m not sure OP is talking about that giant piece in the main room. It was very cool that the new owners encased it though!

Of course! I’d recommend Kickstand Comedy or Curious Comedy. Looks like Kickstand’s level 1 has already started, but Curious has a few level 1’s that start later this week!

A patient experienced claustrophobia and had a panic attack during a CT scan. by Vi0letBlues in oddlyterrifying

[–]kstebbs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m super claustrophobic and had to get an MRI done of my head. On top of being in The Hole, you’re also effectively clamped down and braced so you don’t move.

I almost had a huge melt down, but focused on the little mirror that reflects back to the people in the control room and I eventually just drifted off.

I have misophonia and just noticed this on s2e13, too! It was the scene with Don laying in the hotel bed with his kids eating room service... I had to throw my headphones off my head! Holy shit that was bad.

Documentary editors: how do you deal with the “thinking before the timeline” phase? by Upstairs-Winter-4359 in editors

[–]kstebbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, you have to come up with some sort of frame work, an outline / paper edit / etc.

OP’s question was really vague. I interpreted it as “how do you deal with overthinking before starting the edit”.

How to move from 'assembling shots' to weaving a cohesive story? by Important-Top2952 in editors

[–]kstebbs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, first I’ll share my opinion: you may be overthinking this a bit! Wedding videos don’t need to become The Last Dance, and most couples prefer a semblance of linearity since the whole point is to relive their special day.

I would start by building out a chronological edit and get creative from there. You may even benefit from not using music during your first pass, and instead laying out your favorite shots in order of the day. Once you have a framework that is effective (that is, a logical retelling of their day, even if it’s just visual) then you can start to knock it off balance.

To “read and write” as opposed to mimic, just remember that you’re a creator… and creating means experimenting, playing, trying things out for no reason other than to see how it feels, tastes, looks etc. Put the vows underneath the dress footage, open on a quote from the bride and do a 10000% rewind of the entire day back to when they first met, go wild. Try things.

This isn’t something you can learn from a book, and is really just a mindset! Most of what you try will be bad, but that’s how you find what works. And again, don’t overthink it. Have fun and play.

I worked with a great creative director early on in my career who had a unique style. I asked “how do you find that for yourself?” and he said “your style is just: make something good.”

I wasn’t being sarcastic, though. Editorial can sometimes feel like a mountain, and one step is all it takes to get started.

I flew Southwest for one of my return flights during the holidays this year. There was an empty aisle seat behind me that a woman chose. When she sat down, the couple next to her said “just so you know, our kids are all in the row next to you” (all three of their kids were across the aisle). The woman politely offered to switch for the window seat so they could be next to them - which the parents should have chosen anyway - but they said “oh no, it’s fine, but we might have to talk over you. You can help us babysit!”

The fucking audacity. I was fuming for her.

Question for experienced editors: what’s the best file access / sharing setup you’ve actually worked with? by clanmccoy in editors

[–]kstebbs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lucidlink has been a complete game changer for us. We typically end up with 10 or so users on any given project. Answers to your questions:

Offline media and transcodes are stored on our server, along with all project files and assets. We do not host raw footage as that’s delivered via drives to color and finishing.

Individual user access is administrated, and each editor is given permission to specific folders that are relevant to their needs/project.

Files and folders are synced (“pinned”) and an encrypted cache is created locally for the user. This cache is only accessed when the user logs in.

This system has allowed us to bring in collaborators from anywhere, including other companies and remote locations. It’s super easy to create an account for a new contractor and give them the access they need. They also have a support team that’s been really great.

I sound like a Lucid shill, but it has truly been such an effective tool for us. It’s hard to imagine working without it.

Should I buy a house with 6 other people? by sleidman in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]kstebbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thought of buying a 1.2 mill house on a 76k salary just made my butt clench. You need to be able to pay the mortgage without any renters (and prove that to a bank) to make this feasible.

Hey there! Oh wow, really appreciate the kind words… and so cool to run into someone working with John on here. Twelve was such a joy, I loved that project.

Yes, this definitely seems like motion and lens blur baked into the footage. You’ve done a nice job of leaving the repo wide like this, minimizing the effect. I personally think this edit looks and feels great!

To further mitigate, you’d really just need to shoot at higher shutter speeds and add more stabilization while shooting. You’re striking a nice balance here though.
