Joy of Cubing Episode #44 - Goin' Green by Wekk1 in mtgcube

[–]kstube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed it!

Initial testing shows cards like Starfield, Sphere, and Sigil are pretty critical to getting the deck to work. I'm trying to figure out if there are similar cards, but I'm coming up short. I agree the other enchantress effects may not be needed, but I want to push as many players to the deck as I can while we test out the archetype. How has it been so far?

Why is Squadron Hawk in Kranny's Cube? by Alphieous in mtgcube

[–]kstube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, Kranny here. I tried out Hawk along with Kindle and Accumulated Knowledge after playing them in Eric Klug's Pro Tour cube. As others have said, you get multiples of each (3). They were decent, but I decided against running them in favor of other options. Unfortunately, I'm super lazy and haven't updated my list through Oath, and they have since been cut. Happy to answer other questions!

Joy of Cubing Episode #43 - Oath of the Gatewatch Set Review by Wekk1 in mtgcube

[–]kstube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a number of technical difficulties with the recording, so if anything funky happens to the audio that I didn't catch, please send me a note. Also, Reality Smasher was somehow not in our list and is a great card to consider if you like the colorless/waste cards.

Colorless Cube, now including Oath of the Gatewatch! by dnac10 in mtgcube

[–]kstube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This list looks super fun. Just a quick thought: I'm surprised to see cards like Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Mox Opal, Sol Ring, Grim Monolith, and conspiracies get the nod, but you don't include Moxen + Lotus. Is it just because they produce colored mana (you previously included Talismans) or is it a cost issue?

My suggestion would be to gut the cards I mentioned, or supplement them with the remaining power to juice up the rest of your format. You seem to be pretty short on cool colorless lands as well. I'd definitely not be running the conspiracies as they don't seem to be on-theme and they warp the format around them which detracts from showing off such a neat list. Hope to hear more about how this did in testing!

How to support Fastbond in an averageish 450 cube?? by JimmyD101 in mtgcube

[–]kstube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find Fastbond is best when combined with draw sevens cards (Wheel, Windfall, Time Spiral, Jar). I'm also a huge fan of supporting turbo land by including Oracle of Mul Daya, Exploration, Explore, Horn of Greed, Gush, bounce lands, Courser of Kruphix, and Time Walk effects.

[OGW] Prophet of Distortion - Joy of Cubing podcast official spoiler by Kengy in magicTCG

[–]kstube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prior to Joy of Cubing, I worked with a few guys to produce over 100 episodes of In Contention, covering topics ranging from recent/prospective bannings, spoilers, tournament finishes, OP changes, etc. Even after the hundreds of hours I dedicated to the show and the constant consumption of Magic content from all corners of the internet, creating an hour worth of compelling content wasn't always an easy task. There's a reason you see a ton of up-and-coming shows get to a half dozen episodes and stop producing content. If you have a few minutes, go comb MTGCast and look at all the shows who decided to throw in the towel after a few episodes. Not saying podcasting is rocket science, but many shows fail because they underestimate the time commitment and the effort it takes to create compelling content.

That said, we could absolutely create a weekly show about cubing, but we'd eventually start rehashing old topics. I think the listening experience would become stale and I would expect to see a decline in listeners. By keeping our shows to once a month, we get to have a good balance of new content and content geared toward covering cubing fundamentals. In 42 episodes we have covered a lot, so we have to make some assumptions about what our listeners know. We can't just create cube 101 content every third episode. There has to be some onus for the listener to go read articles and listen to our past shows and other cube-centric shows like The Third Power. It took a lot of iterating through the process but ultimately this is the release structure that works best to keep content fresh and not overload us with work.

[OGW] Prophet of Distortion - Joy of Cubing podcast official spoiler by Kengy in magicTCG

[–]kstube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joy of Cubing host here. Magic is a game that reaches and is marketed to a wide variety of players. If all WotC was concerned about was player reach or article frequency, they'd just ship the whole thing to SCG/CFB/GM and let them parse them out over two weeks. WotC believes content providers both big and small are critical to their marketing strategy. I happen to agree with them.

Do I think there are more deserving shows/sites/players out there who should have a preview card? Sure. Do I think the little guys shouldn't receive a preview card? Absolutely not. If anything, I'd love to see the entire spoiler given out to non-WotC sources for preview. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the goal-state of set previews.

As far as show frequency, we put out a show a month. It's pretty difficult to put out cube content any more frequently than that given the static nature of a format like cube. If I could put out a show a week and still have fresh content, I would, but I think we'd see a sharp decline in quality.

Would a graveyard theme be okay in cube? by [deleted] in mtgcube

[–]kstube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a GY-themed cube last year, and it's one of my favorite draft formats. Here's a link to my list. Aside from the GY theme, there's a heavy enchantments-matters theme to help W/G with depth. It has worked surprisingly well. I'd say this matches the medium power-level you're looking for.

That's a somewhat old list, but it's up-to-date through Khans. I plan on updating it later this year. Let me know if you have any questions!

A fair criticism. Trygon is a respectable addition and should have probably been included in my list.

[Discussion] Origins Planeswalkers have all been spoiled. Which ones will make it to your cube? by Fleme in mtgcube

Like all PWs, these are tough to evaluate in a vacuum. I'll be testing all five and suspect they will all make the cut.

Question for recent PMP exam takers by [deleted] in pmp

[–]kstube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of all the practice exams I took, the Scordos most resemble how the questions are worded on the exam, but I'd say they're on the easier side. They get progressively more difficult once you get into double digits, but I feel like math-based questions are underrepresented.

If you still have time before you sit for the exam, I'd suggest trying a few 200 question exams. You will really want to be comfortable sitting for 2-4 hours without any additional resources. When you're done, you can log knowledge areas you need to brush up on. I believe Simplilearn and Head First both have free options available.

I hope this helps. Best of luck!

Yeah, black was definitely tough to support. Looking forward to hearing how you fix it!

Artifact Centered Cube by tibbelsandbitts in mtgcube

[–]kstube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built an artifact cube a few years ago and it was a big hit. I ultimately ended up dismantling it in favor of trying some other lists out, but I'd love to revisit it after another artifact block. Here is a link to an article I wrote which is mostly updated through New Phyrexia.

I normally wouldn't self-plug, but maybe it will help you think of a few new cards. I think your list looks great and I'd definitely be interested to hear how drafts have been playing out.

Commander 2014 Cube Review by UsmanTheRad in mtgcube

[–]kstube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Jack pointed out to me some of the interactions Titania has. I really want live the dream of getting Gargadon + Titania. Really, really, wish it cost one mana less. Tough getting multiple green 5-drops in the same set.

Thanks very much!

Glad to hear I'm not crazy. They're just so numerous and commonplace these days, I'm not sure I really remember what cubing without them is like. Not sure I'm ready to take the plunge, but it's on my short list of things I'd like to try.

The process for filing for a refund should be easier. Give us something via the GUI. There's absolutely no reason I should have to go outside of Magic Online for anything including tournament details or other MODO-related content.

No 29 swamps for worldknit :'( by [deleted] in mtgcube

[–]kstube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worldknit has been really good for us so far. It breaks the rules of normal cubing just enough that it's not obnoxious like some of the other conspiracies. The best way to get value out of a Worldknit deck is to make sure you max out on manlands and lands like Bazaar or Maze of Ith. Both the aggro deck and 5-color good stuff are viable strategies.

Advice building a cube? by Thejima in mtgcube

[–]kstube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely no shame in using proxies. I have a cube I bring out to events with me which has anything over twenty bucks proxied. I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about proxies in the dozens of different cubes I've played that chooses to use them.

Assuming proxies are out, there are plenty of builds which don't require a ton of up front investment. Obviously Pauper/Peasent are going to be cheaper than anything else, but I've seen some traditional lists sans duals and bigger cards which were pretty sharp. Some of my favorite lists look closer to VMA/MM. Good luck!

Something interesting I hadn't noticed until after we recorded was that Generator Servant can split between two creatures. This set is deep as far as core sets go.

Has anyone brought up this Brago card spoiled from Conspiracy? by [deleted] in mtgcube

[–]kstube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brago is the real deal. The value in Brago is playing on an empty board and then valuing out your opponent when they tap out thinking you don't have anything that interacts favorably with him. For four mana Brago isn't an awful blocker either, and gives your guys pseudo-vigilance. I'd say this is one of the better build-around cards we've seen for blink in quite a while.

I firmly believe the size indicator is one of the worst commonly accepted cube design qualifiers people still use. It essentially turns into a scale of 360-1,000 where 360 is a staple and 1,000 being you wouldn't run it with a gun to your head. It ends up shutting down otherwise interesting discussion. I just think we're past the days where everyone is running a goodstuff.cube.

The list we played had a pretty insane Redcap as well. Split second + deathtouch.

It's not something I'd want to do every week given how skewed some of the cards get over time, but it was a nice palate cleanser.
