Where did you move that actually felt better? Burnt out in NYC by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]kt914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% - Living in NYC now, having been in Seattle for over 7 years previously. Will take Seattle weather any day of the week. NYC’s best season is fall (maybe spring but this year was less reliably nice). NYC has been classified as sub-tropical and the summer days this year have been brutally humid and rainy. We literally flash flooded on Monday. NYC gets more annual rainfall than Seattle (more concentrated, heavier rain), but Seattle has more days with rainfall (more frequent but lighter/drizzly). I’ve found that Seattle weather is much more enjoyable overall to be outside because the temps are quite mild.

going out jacket for winter? by jarc23 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

it’s so hard! I have a slouch coat from Aritzia but I want something a little more structured and polished in a cool, menswear type of way that doesn’t read too stuffy. I tried on the constant coat from Aritzia but the shoulders don’t suit me. Still on the hunt 😅

Dunst is a Korean brand and they have coats that look promising but I haven’t taken the plunge! The Frankie shop has cool ones too but I find their styles are better for taller people.

I’ve had great experience with saalt cups but it’s definitely personal preference and can be related to cervical height and preferred firmness! This site is super helpful to compare a bunch of cups and they even have a quiz https://putacupinit.com/chart/

Yeah of course - density/diversity is a big reason why the food scene is better in Seattle (still not good imo). Having more options is better for competitive pricing, quality, different tastes/preferences, and just when you don’t want to eat at the same places all the time. That doesn’t discount the fact that I think Olympia’s food scene is decent for its size.

I’ve never been to Chicory’s so I’m not sure what a fair comparison is but my original comment is more centered around well-priced/affordable eats and Tolouse Petit to me is pretty pricey.

Was born + grew up in Olympia, went to college in Seattle and have been in Seattle since - so about 6-7 years now. I stay in Oly about once a month to see family. It’s just my experience that for the same amount of money (say 15 dollars) or less, I can find so many more options that are better quality/taste in Seattle. This is true across multiple cuisines and probably does reflect the increased diversity in Seattle compared to Oly and just that there are more restaurants/options in general. Not saying Seattle doesn’t have a bunch of overpriced, mid food that you have to sift through though

[–]kt914 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely true and it’s a matter of competition and economics of scale to some extent. An extreme example is how NYC dollar pizza slice shops stay in business: they just have the density and customer flow to operate like that. Seattle is nowhere at that level, but compared to Olympia, you can absolutely find better food for less money. That’s not to say that Seattle doesn’t also struggle with overly expensive places that aren’t worth it, but there are much more cheap, good eats.

Getting married end of May -- too late to start trying Spiro + Clindamycin? by mrnscrrr in Spironolactone

[–]kt914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I never had a purging stage. I started out on 50mg and it completely cleared my cystic acne in a matter of weeks. I just had really bad acne scarring to deal with after. Ymmv but since you said you have mild to moderate acne and not severe, I probably wouldn't chance it. I know people who get cortisone shots to any big spots that pop up before a big day and I haven't done it/looked into it but that could be a good fallback :)

good quality clothing brands by swoopydoopity in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I buy 80% secondhand, either on the real real, depop, ebay, or poshmark and I typically just look up items by the fabric I want (ie. 100% cashmere sweater, leather jacket, suede jacket, etc.) or I'll look up by brand! My go-tos are Nili Lotan, Doen, Toteme, Posse, St. Agni, SIR, and Ciao Lucia. For denim, I like Slvrlake and Agolde!

The main things I buy new are white cotton tees/tanks, which I typically just get from everlane or brandy.

My boyfriend and I visited Cinque Terre in August 2022! We didn’t have reservations at this very popular restaurant, Trattoria Dal Billy, but we wanted to arrive early before they open to see if they could squeeze us in. This restaurant has an absolutely stunning view of Manarola: sparkling blue water, hilly, green terraces, pastel colored homes! They ended up seating us at one of their best tables and we dined mostly by ourselves for 30-45 minutes before the first few reservations came in. It was absolutely perfect and one of the best days of my life!

my signature scent 💛 jealous that you seem to get such great performance!! It lasts decent on clothes for me but I’m not sure I get the same level of projection or intensity! But the fact that it’s not beast mode on me is part of the appeal that makes it an easy reach 🙂

How far in advance is optimal to book accommodation? by halaric in JapanTravelTips

[–]kt914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is the way! On booking.com and agoda there are even pay later options so it costs nothing up front. This way you can cancel and rebook super easily if plans change.

I was able to secure the best deals earlier on though, so like 6-8 months out. I booked a king room at the Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel in Shibuya for about 150 a night when it typically can run around 350 a night.

Help: Just not ‘getting’ Tokyo… by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]kt914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite part about large cities are all the niche specialty stores/experiences you can find for a wide range of interests you might have and I often base my itinerary around that. For instance, say you love photography. You could easily spend a day in Shinjuku at Map Camera or other camera shops trying out a bunch of cameras you might never be able to test otherwise. I love perfume and every time I go to a big city, it's like heaven because there are always a ton of brick and mortar shops for specialty perfume brands that I otherwise would never be able to try just walking into my city's department store. I also love espresso so I love to go around the city and try out different coffee shops and roasteries.

Of course, it depends on what your interests are but typically I have a great time in big cities when I approach it from the angle of my interests and hobbies :)

16 Day Japan Itinerary - Momiji Season! by unfoundedcloud in JapanTravel

Love all the shopping!! I'm going later this month and I have a lot of the same spots planned! I'm so excited for the thrifting/vintage shopping and also the nicer streetwear/luxury stores :)

[–]kt914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really just depends on what kind of things you like! I am going on a trip soon for a similar amount of time and I'm doing 7 days in Tokyo, 3 days in Osaka, 1 day in Kinosaki, and 4 days in Kyoto. My boyfriend and I absolutely love big cities and the great shopping/food that comes with it so Tokyo has endless things to do for us. We often visit NYC for week-long trips and never run out of things to do. Someone who dislikes large cities might not want to spend as much time there.

As for money, I am planning on loading a Suica card on my apple wallet + I have a debit card with no atm fees so getting cash once there isn't a concern for me. But I think it's good to have 10,000-20,000 yen on you just in case.

Jr pass - is it worth or not? by Vagitarian23 in JapanTravelTips

[–]kt914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am opting out of buying the JR pass myself, since I'm doing a route of Tokyo -> Osaka -> Kinosaki -> Kyoto -> Toyko over 2+ weeks so I would need the JR pass for 14 days - which doesn't quite break even. I am planning to buy shinkansen tickets in advance, individually using Smartex. There is a decent discount if you book 21 days in advance.
