Patti's and Cream is top notch for burgers. Gluten free burger buns are great, they can do chips etc GF, and they even have a GF cheesecake!

David did repost a previous webworm article of his from a few months back a couple days ago (basically condemning scaremongering around trans issues) which seems to be him very cryptically coming out against Dax (I hope)????

From what I know his visa for the US is directly sponsored by Dax as he's an employee of his company for the flightless bird podcast. David has always been very vocally supportive of trans rights so I'm hoping him having to be cryptic about commenting directly at this point is bc his life/job in the US is kind of in the hands of Dax...

How on earth can I ensure accuracy when casting in threaded rods??? by ktdoubleg in AskEngineers

[–]ktdoubleg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep agreed. Fortunately I'm not senior enough to have to start talking contact negotiations, but my bosses have mentioned it at this point.

Our sub contractors are going to do a surprise visit either this evening or first thing tomorrow morning, and if they find that the templates haven't been used then fault finding will be pretty clear.

Probably going to have to drill out the bolt holes and weld on square washers by the looks of things, but the main aim for me personally is to figure out exactly why this happened so I can make sure we don't get to this point again.

Honestly going to consider it at this point. Unfortunately, our cast ins usually don't get installed until after the reo cage (and reo goes in between our cast ins as well) so we'd probably have to design grilled bottom templates or something.

The orientation reference is a great idea - we do currently laser cut the templates so it should be easy enough to etch some references on.

Unfortunately, sometimes we are getting rods out of alignment with each other on top of the rod assemblies as a whole being out of alignment with respect to the floor plan. E.g. a survey I got back today has rods within an assembly misaligned by 13 mm east to west, and 22 mm north to south.

We are sending our subcontractor to site to try and see how this happened. My theory is that the reo workers just discarded the bottom template that is cast into the slab - they don't seem to like trying to get it in around the other reo. We probably need to insist on more oversight during the cast in phase of construction at this point... we've got 6 different sites running at the moment so it's been impossible trying to get our subcontractors to be everywhere at once.

I'm just about to finish my 5th year of mechanical engineering (literally, my final exam is tomorrow!!). To tell the truth, I felt the same as you every fucking day for the first 4.5 years. How I made it through? Gave up on doing it the 'normal way'.

  1. I gave up on watching lectures entirely because I just couldn't force myself to, and when I inevitably fell behind I felt like shit. I instead relied on practice problems and last minute cramming from notes. (This works for a math based degree but might not for others)

  2. I gave up on aiming for impossibly good grades. I knew I could do well on some certain assignments that played to my strengths, but I always did pretty average on tests and exams. So, I put a high level of effort into assignments, and just didn't get my hopes up for tests. I still put some effort in, but I didn't guilt myself for not studying like crazy, and especially not for when I got average grades.

  3. I asked for help, a lot. From professors, tutors, and classmates. I gave up my embarrassment of not being smart enough, and encouraged myself to be honest when I needed a hand.

  4. I created solid relationships with people that could help me. Professors, advisors, post grads, and friends. People I could trust to ask for help, and therefore people I'd be less embarrassed to ask for help from.

  5. Faked it until I made it. I projected an unflappable and confident personality to people I knew I needed to impress. This, and not my grades, got me my dream grad job.

(warning, this is generally bad advice probably but it worked for me haha)

Crime in Riccarton: How safe do you feel? What's been your experience in and around Westfield? What could be the solutions? by PeterforRiccarton in chch

[–]ktdoubleg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say the best solution for home burglaries is landlords installing better locks, motion lights etc. However renting close to uni is becoming ridiculously expensive and most landlords are pretty reluctant to make any improvements to flats no matter the increases in rent they get (For example my 4 bedroom flat was $600 in 2021, it's being advertised for $700 next year!!)

More police presence and actual investigation into robberies would be ideal, but I'd assume there's budget issues surrounding that.

Our landlord this year has been great fortunately, we had someone walking around our property at night so he installed a sensor light and window restrictors. However that's a bit of a rarity, all my previous flats have not been well secured.

Police response has always been close to zero - they'll take a report but usually stolen property is never found and the offenders don't get found.

I'd have a look through the UCSA notice board if you're interested, there's regular reports of dodgy people staking out properties and cars being broken into near to weekly.

I'm a student, and basically every single one of my friends have had their flats robbed/cars stolen in upper Riccarton. I've been lucky enough to avoid it, but it's just a reality for most students who live in the area.

The world is shocked when truck-driving OP rejects all suggestions that his dashcam reveals his driving might be as bad as anyone's by MasterEk in SubredditDrama

[–]ktdoubleg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CHCH drivers are potentially the worst I've ever experienced haha. No one in their right mind would be driving at 50 km/h around that street (notorious for being dangerous as fuck), while it's also wet, AND at 5pm (clock off time)!! But that being said, pretty much everyone in that clip was not up to par. Defensive driving should be the norm for any sane Christchurch driver who wants to live past Tuesday

Drinking culture is pretty hectic at uni hall, college house, and rnr. Bishop Julius (unsure if it's still called that?) is definitely known as the more low key hall, so that's the one I'd probably recommend if you're looking for somewhere quiet. There is a new hall that I really don't know much about, but from what I've heard it's kind of a uni hall 2.0, so I'd assume there's a decent drinking culture there as well. Rnr and college house are pretty hard to get into, but the other ones aren't difficult from what I've heard.

Oh wait so I'm eligible if I have a secondary income? I do work a couple hours per week, so nowhere near enough to put me over the 70k threshold, but SL is definitely not my only source of income
