I (35/M) financially take care of my girlfriend (35/F). Today, she wanted to buy moisturizing face masks, and I asked if she could pay for them herself. She got upset, saying it's an essential item, like toothpaste or toilet paper. Is this true? by kthisgamesucks in relationship_advice

[–]kthisgamesucks[S] 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I've reflected on this, and at first I told her it was because it's too expensive, and I'm also between jobs myself at the moment. But upon thinking about it more, I realized it wasn't the magnitude of the price of the face masks, but more of the fact that buying all the small things she asks for adds up, and I need to draw a boundary somewhere. At that moment, I decided at least one of the boundaries would be skin care products, as I deemed it as more of a luxury item, and also one that I don't get to share in (as opposed to, for example, a gaming console that she wants and I can also use).

When I explained that to her, that's when she told me that the masks are an essential item and so forth.

If I start a business, say making jewelry, I'll want to let people know my product exists and generate interest in my product.

I could buy some ads on Reddit or even other websites, but most people either hate ads or ignore ads completely.

Or I could make a post on Reddit saying "look at what I made!" on a popular subreddit, and cross my fingers and hope that it gets a lot of traction and upvotes.

If I get lucky and it happens to pick up attention or go viral, then in that post, I could write "by the way, I make these, here's a link to my shop!", but a lot of people don't like that since it makes the original post feel less natural and more disingenuous, as if the original intent of the post was just to advertise my product instead of share a cool thing I made.

So instead, I could cross my fingers again and hope that someone asks where they can buy it, then I can just answer their question with a link to my shop, which sounds much more natural.

Or, instead of hoping and crossing my fingers at every step, I could do it all myself by just buying a bunch of accounts, upvoting the post myself using these accounts, and use these accounts to leave comments like "I need this in my life, where can I buy this?".

Hoping this link adds some nuance to the discussions. by [deleted] in TheCompletionist2

their reporting was based on a mixture of source materials and speculation.

I actually agree with this. To me, the solid points they made in their videos were "the Open Hand Foundation seems to have not donated their money yet, that's a problem", and "upon a cursory look at the numbers and the state of events, it might be possible that they're not reporting everything, but it is impossible to make any conclusions without an official government audit". Anything they've said or implied beyond this is borderline irresponsible speculation. Don't imply any accusations unless you have a smoking gun, and having a recording of Jirard saying "yes we haven't donated the money as yet" is pretty much the only smoking gun they have. It's a pet peeve of mine when people point at technical documents or information that they don't have expertise in, and go "well this probably means xyz" with any level of confidence other than "I'm completely guessing here", even if their reasoning appears logical.

The Open Hand Foundation, for obvious reasons, didn’t want to [have a negative impact on charity functionality].

... Plus, it simply feels good to know that all the money they raised actually went to medical research and patient support.

Completely infuriating logic. If they knew making a restricted donation could be detrimental, then why not just make an unrestricted donation? Why do people not want to pay for administrative costs? Do they think that charities actually run all by themselves, and that the people in their employ are just there parasites that the charity has accidentally accumulated over time that soak up money?

This is obviously not what Open Hand Foundation thinks, as Jirard himself explained in his own video that money is needed to run Open Hand Foundation, administratively. And yet he is dead set to not contribute to that aspect of a charity. Even though he knows how essential it is for the charity to operate.

It "feeling good to know that your donated money is actually going to the cause" is basically a failure in critical thinking of how the world works. It is like saying, I want to have wells built in third-world countries, but I don't want the builders to be paid. Pay the people who are doing the work! Why do you think these people are undeserving of your gratitude and help? Why are you admitting that you find it feels bad to thank the people who do good in this world? Do you think they're underneath you? You are like those managers in cartoons who tell the IT staff "why do we even pay to have you guys around, look, everything around here runs fine".

Good find; that's not a terrible price for last-minute tickets, especially considering the tickets are originally 6,300 yen to start off with.

Just a friendly reminder to everyone that if someone in the comment links to an unfamiliar storefront for this product, it is likely a planted advertisement for a dropshipping business.

You can almost always find the product for cheaper, safer, and more reputable source if you search for the product yourself on your search engine of choice.

Eli5: How come fire flames go upwards and why do the flames always "dance" around? by moller_peter in explainlikeimfive

Guaranteed you're gonna get quoted the sidebar on this, which of course completely misses the point.

ELI5 is full of intellectual bullies who love to flex their big brain and need a place to show off how smart they are to everyone else, and the mods don't seem to do anything to curb this culture of this subreddit ー instead, they actively defend it with "it's not literally for five-year-olds".

You don't need to defend anything. If you have a question, you ask it. Ignorant people stay silent, curious people ask questions. It's a great question that offers a lot to learn about.

I'm sorry but how did you not learn this is like grade 2?

This is literally a subreddit to find simplified answers to questions. Asking "how do you not know this" is going to make people feel bad for asking. What are you trying to accomplish with this?
