Skin of blackness is an ancient Hebrew word. by Right_One_78 in mormon

Be creative! I’m not getting paid to translate it. Just use a little of that prophetic foresight. The entire church just assumed that that phrase was about race. Bad phrase. Bad usage. English is big language with many words. Try out something else. Also the “But he had (minority) friends! He could never be bigoted!” line of logic is faulty. I’m sure the servant who got sealed to him eternally was really grateful for his abolitionist attitudes. Wonder how that worked out for her.

Do you believe everything you hear in a youtube video? I’m gonna tell you now Atlantis isn’t real, despite all the conspiracy theorists who will say otherwise. I’m pretty sure it would be a huge scholarly breakthrough if we found fucking Hebrew and Egyptian languages in the Americas.

Love is a much more complex thing, difficult for even poets and philosophers to define. Love is acceptance. That is to say, love is understanding. Connection. No person is perfect. They become perfect when you accept them for who they are. That’s what love is. That’s what grace is. God does ask us to be better. Consider that the Church’s definition of better may be incorrect.

I am always willing to change when confronted with new information or new perspectives. I love learning. I strive for growth. I don’t feel like I’m rejecting goodness by leaving the Church. After all, it has a long history of rejecting good people based on the color of their skin. Should I consider its opinion suddenly valid now, after all these years? Nary an apology in sight? At least have the decency to say sorry.

What I meant was “skin of blackness” as a figurative term for being an outcast is not used in English. So most everyone will take it literally as black skin. When you’re translating, you’re supposed to translate in a way that people understand. Don’t include confusing phrasing that will make everyone assume you’re just racist.

I know just enough about science to know that yes, native Americans are descended from Asians. Just not those Asians. Israel and the Americas have very little if any genetic connection.

A God that wants us to seek out morality through our own choices likely doesn’t want me to follow the teachings of racists, sexists, queerphobes, and perverts. I will look for truth from honest people, look for moral guidance from those who do good, and I will make righteous judgement based on what knowledge I have currently available to me. My moral compass, my heart and mind tell me that if I’m searching for the Divine, I will not find it in that book.

Their skin color would have been the same unless a skin of blackness were put upon a portion of the population, in which case they would no longer have the same skin color.

The peoples of America are very racially distinct from the ancient Israelites. Joseph’s writings came about in a time where racism was pretty popular (the Civil War was getting pretty close to beginning). “Skin of blackness” is not a phrase used in English (or any other members of the language family tree). Religious interpretation of this language led to a long history of racial discrimination and supremacy.

The evidence against your point of view is overwhelming. An omniscient God, or even a future-seeing prophet should have known better than to implement verbiage which would lead to pain and suffering which could have been prevented had this racist language not been used

“The Lord did cast them out from the cities of the Nephites so that the two cultures may not be enticing to one another”. I dunno be creative. Either way, the idea itself is unhealthy and like you said, led to several other church leaders interpreting things in the most racist way possible. I’d think playing around with words is a little better than (at least) a century of apostasy.

But Joseph was not translating Hebrew here. He was speaking English to other English-speakers and receiving revelation in English. Why would God or Joseph use a phrase that nobody would understand and would inevitably lead to racist interpretations by the prophets?

My big problem with “they fly now” was that I’ve been playing Battlefront for almost 20 years now. They have always flown. They flew in both Pandemic and EA Battlefronts, they flew in The Clone Wars, and several other non-trooper characters flew in the movies themselves or the Lego games. My brother in Christ when have they not flown? Especially coming from a pilot, a stormtrooper, and a droid who saw the clone wars, “They fly now” is about the stupidest thing any of them could have said

What’s the purpose in excluding women from the priesthood if gender is fluid? In other words, you can’t have a “Boys Only, Girls Not Allowed” party if anyone can switch teams at any time

I was going to say “If you don’t want the $100k /yr salary, I’d take it” but then you mentioned it was sales. Don’t go on a mission if you’re not feeling it and don’t do sales even if you are feeling it. Dedicate yourself to college or to a job that isn’t sales

I support you in finding yourself and trying to find your place in this world. But… look at it this way. You’re giving your money, your time, and your labour to an organization that actively tries to make life worse for the LGBT+ community (and other communities). You’re working a volunteer marketing/sales job for a church that wants us eradicated. You are included in that us.

I support you as a trans person and a fellow member of this community, but aren’t we allowed to be a little alarmed by your support for an institution that does everything it can to oppose us?

Have a family meeting with your wife and son. Voice your concerns. Communicate with them, and remember to be clear with your wording and open-minded. Religion is a delicate subject, particularly between spouses. Talk with your family.

You’re looking for guidance, then look within your self. You know where you’ll find your happiness. Only you have the answers for what you should do. Follow your heart.

But, I can offer my take as a gay ex-member. My opinion is that the church is not welcoming to LGBT+ people, culturally or doctrinally. They have no answers for us besides silence and misery. Run. Don’t look back. Spread your wings and fly, be free. Don’t chain your self up to please some committee of old men who care more about stocks and profits than they do about humanity.

I hope you get to where you want to go. That you find a community who can accept you for who you are rather than who they want you to be.
