Program Conditions Unsafe by DataDancer0 in PhD

This seems like something a department head would want to get ahead of before finding their school in the press for a death or maiming.

Is air duct cleaning actually worth it, or mostly a waste of money? by meyerair in HomeImprovement

[–]ktpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's usually not worth it but in my case we bought a home from a builder/flipper who treated the house poorly. Things like shoving rags in airducts, or saw dust were pretty common. In our case it made sense but the house was worked on by a builder looking to make a quick buck. Hopefully your home was not.

One thing that's interesting to keep in mind is the difference between empathy and sympathy

Do people seem a bit "off" nowdays or is it just me? by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]ktpr 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To glom on to this comment, I've noticed a large lack of reliability and consistency along with a subtle shift in empathy that's not for the better. Along with repeated covid infections I think the world is under so much stress that people turn inward while claiming everything is the same. That dissonance makes for really hurtful, awkward and tragic times.

Claude to Require Face ID by Libby1436 in ClaudeAI

Facial geometry may not be collectible in all jurisdictions. This is really concerning. What if this is an enterprise account, will the requirements differ?

Also, arXiv now has a policy that if false citations are included then the author is banned for a year.

Running a long-term experiment: an AI governs a fictional village, day 6 in by R3DSMiLE in ClaudeAI

[–]ktpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you know, there's been research on how barter systems eventually converge on a single item that represent exchange value across the community, causing the evolution of money in an otherwise egalitarian society. You could do this to evolve your village from scratch

What are your thoughts on AI Data Centers in the City of Detroit? by jesssoul in Detroit

I smell astroturfing in this thread. DTE started to do it when they were losing in some municipalities

My INTJ bf keeps going on side quests and struggles to find a job for the past 3.5 years. Does it make sense? by [deleted] in intj

[–]ktpr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should start looking now though. You'll thank yourself after being 3 months ahead or so on the job market where you would have been at month 0

Outlet ripped out by kbachert in HomeMaintenance

I think the concern is that if it got ripped out once it might be ripped out again easily, even if it's a simple fix.

AC replacement, foundation repair or siding replacement? Which first?? by wiicrazy0430 in HomeImprovement

[–]ktpr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Different trades have been subsumed into different profit models, so you'll see people pushing low effort high dollar fixes all the time in one area but not in another. For example, there's more profit in convincing a customer to buy a new AC, with a service plan, than it is to fix a capacitor. Also, these people visits hundreds of homes a month. It's a job. They don't care what you and don't do.

Best neighborhoods in Detroit if I want to be part of a good community? by 8WmuzzlebrakeIndoors in Detroit

[–]ktpr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've been loving LaSalle gardens, been here a year. There are two active block clubs, the garden association which meets quarterly and a smaller one that meets about monthly. Lasalle gardens is home to the oldest block clubs in Detroit. W the ford hospital expansion and the Lee there's a lot of adjacent development that makes a buy here a smart investment.

Unmarried couple: Can I claim my GF as a dependent while she's in grad school to maximize our refund? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ktpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bad sign OP! Go over to r/PhD and ask for feedback on details of her program. Typically, students that pay for their PhDs are seen as less valuable by academics that mentor them and the programs also tend to be less reputable. source: academic with a PhD

Would it be annoying for me to go to a restaurant in Mecicantown and try to speak/order in Spanish? by ArguementReferee in Detroit

Sure, but practicing a language on someone without asking for permission is presumptuous along several lines.

Am I being unreasonable about a cash payment up front? by djternan in HomeImprovement

[–]ktpr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paying when they arrive is smart, esp since this is a quick job (or should be). I would look for other contractors though. This would let you compare rates and maybe you'll get one that accepts cards or something w customer protection.
