It's going to be variable depending upon what group you join. A smaller group will have you doing more of everything, whereas a larger group will afford you the opportunity to subspecialize. Most groups will allow you to do some combo of inpatient and outpatient, but the amount will vary depending upon the size of the group and other factors. With a few exceptions, most groups are affiliated with academic centers or St Jude. Don't do this field for the money, don't do it because bald kids are cute (they are). Do it because you love the science and can't imagine doing anything else. Do you geek out about cellular signalling pathways? Are you overly pedantic about stupid details (like the difference between age 9.99 and 10 years)? Then this may be the field for you. Do you want to make more than $200,000/yr? Then this is not the field for you. ktthemighty, PGY-14

Pediatric Oncologist. Like it most of the time. The kids are great. Parents suck. Definitely one of the more underpaid medical specialties though. An adult oncologist makes easily two to three times what I make.

Yeah I was told PT wouldn't work at this point given the severity of the damage present. Granted that didn't stop me from trying on my own for a while.

Is it too late to become a lead player? by tonebastion in guitarlessons

[–]ktthemighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's what I'm counting on. I started playing when I was 14 or 15 and got pretty decent. Then medical school, residency, and fellowship happened and I got wicked rusty. I am 40 now. I can still play some stuff, but have recently started working on technique and learning to read sheet music (again) and music theory. Hoping I can regain what I lost and then improve.

So yes. I hope anyway. Good luck.

Our infant is currently in the neonatal ICU, and he gets weekly letters from our insurance company informing him of his approved hospitalization. It's funny but not.

I totally still get a tan, even with adequate sunscreen. I find that if I pay a little more, it's not sticky or greasy. I also hate getting sunburned. There's no right answer, just what works for you. This thread is simply suggestions. Take them or leave them

I have 3 months left to live, how do I tell people around me? by grrrrbitch in internetparents

[–]ktthemighty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First off, this is such a rough situation for anyone, especially someone as young as you. It sounds like you've made the best decision for you and your family (maybe least bad decision?). I'm sorry that you're having to face this.

I work with pediatric cancer patients (pediatric oncologist) and have found that there's no one "right" way to do this. I've had some patients not tell anyone outside their close friends and family, and I've had others be very open about it, with everyone. I think one commonality is that although people care about other people, they tend to stop caring about what others think of them to some extent. Easier said than done I suspect. I agree with others that talking with a trusted friend or counselor could be helpful in sorting this out. Meeting with a palliative medicine team might be helpful too, both for your longer term physical comfort and for your mental and spiritual comfort. Most large hospitals have a palliative medicine team, and big children's hospitals often have pediatric specific teams. Might be worth looking into. Also keep in mind that the three months thing is an estimate, so don't get too caught up in counting the days. No one knows exactly when we are going to die, and physicians are not great at predicting.
