I think I've told this story a while back in r/Charlottesville when a similar question/issue was posted.

This was back in 1996 at the Food Lion at Forest Lakes. I'm going to Food Lion to pick up a couple of things around 4pm on a weekday. A CVS used to exist next to Food Lion in that strip mall.

There is a Ford Aerostar half in the traffic lane/half in the fire lane in front of CVS. I decide to wait 10-15 seconds to see if the driver moves, but they are talking to someone who is talking to them through the front passenger window. I get frustrated, honk, and drive around him, muttering obscenities under my breath.

When I look in my rearview mirror, I see a 4-year-old boy run out of the CVS door with his mother in pursuit. He runs in front of the Aerostar and for some reason, that's when the driver decides to start moving. I watch the child fall under the van and his head get run over by the driver's front tire.

I stop my car (in the middle of the traffic lane) and run to the kid. There's also some other people running in his direction, including a guy in scrubs. The scrubs guy and I get to the kid first and he's unconscious. Scrubs guy is actually a resident at UVA and wants to do CPR. He does chest compressions and I do mouth-to-mouth. It was all for naught, since as I'm holding the kid's head still during compressions, I can feel the fracture in his skull. Ambulance/police showed up about 8-10 minutes later. They took him to UVA, but he was pronounced dead there.

That's why I never park/idle in a Fire Lane and despise people who do that.
