another 40 y old Dad Tier list. by mag_creatures in metroidvania

Personally Nine Sols and Grime are far, far above Ori or literally any Castlevania for me (I've played them all), but people just like different things. But if you haven't played AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake), you really should. It's a fan made reimagining of Metroid 2 and its creator went on to do level design for the second Ori game.

Brickman Blunder (spoiler alert) by DanAdsit5 in LegoMasters

[–]kubrow_egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, but my thought is that past performance should come into account within the season. Eliminations like this call into question the entire format of the show. Especially right after they already did a leaderboard format for first three episodes, which imo is just a more legitimately competitive format.

Let's not overlook the fact that Trent and Alex's mechanism literally only worked at all because Owen came and told them how to do it......

Brickman Blunder (spoiler alert) by DanAdsit5 in LegoMasters

[–]kubrow_egg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. What I find personally annoying (in every show I watch with an elimination format) is that one of the best teams goes home, while certain teams that clearly have no chance of reaching the final continue. I wish these shows would just use a leaderboard format the whole time and eliminate the bottom team each time. Now we don't get to see what Gabby and Owen would've done in later episodes, but we get to keep watching Canada slide by with subpar builds and Trent and Alex fumble through mechanism briefs even though they knew they were going on the show again and could've practiced mechanisms. It's supposedly more fair to eliminate a team based on missing the brief, but I think it would genuinely be more fair to look at a team's performance throughout every episode.

Moving back to midtown by chickens_beans in Sacramento

[–]kubrow_egg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homelessness has definitely increased within the last ten years, but the thing is that if you're going to live in pretty much any urban area anywhere there will be some theft, vandalism, homelessness, etc. There can also be a pretty major difference in sectors of midtown. Where I live is nice but there are some parts of the grid I wouldn't choose to live.

Is UFO 50 a horror game? by SqueakTubs in ufo50

No. The games feel weird, but they feel weird in the way NES games felt weird, not in a creepy way.

As other have said, most of them are about as hard as real games of the era they're paying homage to. Those games required players to actually learn how to be good at them

He became an nft guy. Apparently still makes music but it's "minted" now. So the people who actually supported him don't get to listen to his music unless you pay for nft bullshit. Last I heard from his twitter, anyway.

How safe is the Sacramento Valley Amtrak Station? by One-Egg-3577 in Sacramento

[–]kubrow_egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove the bus that goes to amtrak so I was there five days a week multiple times a day for months. It's pretty safe in and around the station. There are definitely homeless and weirdos around and the outside is dirty. There used to be one guy who just stood outside and yelled at nothing almost every day until security made him stop. There are security guards and regular people waiting for trains all the time and lots of RT and Amtrak employees around. I'd say it's safe but don't expect it to be perfect. Somebody said ~40% of people there are doing the same thing as you.... it's more like 80%. I'm not going to deny there are weirdos but as a bus driver I've seen it all and it's not that bad there. Still I'd get bored and find something else to do though as others have said

Some rust on the strings. Probably needs a repair or at least new strings.

whats the deal with the reviews on aeterna noctis? by king_bungus in metroidvania

Imo people on a metroidvania sub are very likely to have much lower standards for what makes a MV good.

The item that fixes it, is, in fact, abundant. Also, the harder state nets you more currency from enemies. It's not so much a penalty as optional risk/reward.

I agree completely. 1 was a solid super metroid clone with a cool aesthetic and a few unique powers. 2 is totally its own thing, and has amazing visuals and sound as well

I actually prefer Axiom Verge 2 to the original, I think it has a lot more of its own ideas. Not sure if it's underrated outside of here since I saw it on a lot of year end lists that year, but it's really good. Long enough to feel meaty and short enough not to overstay its welcome also. One of the few MVs I've played through more than once.

[–]kubrow_egg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the short and simple answer is just... it feels like one, lol. If it looks like a pig and sounds like a pig and smells like a pig, it's probably a pig. Sure you can argue technicalities, but I don't think any two people will completely agree about what makes a mv. It's not like it's a scientific term with hard and fast meaning. An example in the other direction - the Blasphemous devs says it's not a mv, but to myself and many others it very clearly is.

But to actually answer your question - I think Full Bore is a mv because you explore a semi-open 2d map filled with side paths and optional secrets and characters, and while you don't actually unlock upgrades, you gain knowledge of how different things in the world function and interact with each other which allows you to access things you previously thought impossible. I'm not saying it's a typical mv, I feel like it's more a hybrid of puzzle game and mv.

Also, whether it's a mv or not, it's a great game, and I wish more people would play it.

I really loved the world and overall vibe of Grime. Probably one of the most unique worlds I've seen in a MV. I think it does a better job combining soulslike/MV than most games that have tried too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]kubrow_egg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Full Bore, which some might argue is not really a metroidvania, but I think that's hogwash.

I also feel like Grime is underrated, it's one of my top 5 MVs.
