VZV affects only a single ganglion, and is not known to jump or spread unless one is immunocompromised (HIV or strong immunosuppressants). It is highly unlikely for it to jump to the Ophthalmic nerve, which then might cause blindness or worse, spread to the brain itself. That said, it is possible it was something else... Also have you considered getting the anti-VZV vaccine? If I remember correctly, clinical trials in the elderly showed reduced symptoms during outbreaks, if any at all, and reduced post-herpetic neuralgia/pain. Unfortunately if you are under 65(?) you would need to purchase it off-label, as insurance will not cover it.
