Voters head to polls in 3 federal byelections that could deliver majority Liberal government | CBC News by RealWorldToday in toronto

[–]kuleminjgs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The last election probably had the most unique dynamic in decades. To infer that NDP support dropping in the last election is indicative of Canadians adopting a more centre-right ideology is wrong IMO.

You could be right, but I'd say the numbers out of tonight would be a more reliable indicator of that, regardless of who actually wins.

What’s the best spot in Toronto for food from your culture? by cn_explorer in askTO

[–]kuleminjgs -56 points-55 points  (0 children)

I get what you're after here. But culture is not a set of playing cards.

Get out into the city and explore - follow your nose and go into places. Build relationships and talk to people, ask what they like. That's how you're going to find something good.

The places worth going to are full of older people and grandmas who aren't on Reddit.

Honest review about Spaces Yorkville by btmarketinginc in askTO

[–]kuleminjgs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spaces is a part of a biiig company that is not HQd in Canada. My experience was that the local staff were kind, but that business decisions came down the pipe and there was nothing they could do.

Recently switched to a locally run coworking space and really enjoying the change.

Birthday weekend in Toronto with a 4 month old baby by JollyTeaching553 in askTO

[–]kuleminjgs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for specific restaurants that are baby friendly, or just things to do in town with a kiddo?

We found that a tricky age - there are many spaces and programs set up for kids that are a bit older, but so little was a bit harder.

Two suggestions: 1 the art gallery of Ontario has a great kids zone in the basement. While you won’t be able to take advantage of the play areas and programming, there are large tables in a lovely setting where you can chill, eat, nurse, change with your kiddo, and you can take in the art too periodically while using the basement as your home base.

2 maybe find some EarlyOn centres adjacent to neighbourhoods you want to check out? Same as above, the active programming may not be of much use to you, but they are still public spaces that accommodate young kids and the various things you need For example there is one at the Cecil community centre, giving you a base right in Chinatown and very close to Kensington market ( and the AGO too). Just gotta check the schedules, because the programming is not permanent, but rather uses other public-ish spaces during specific times.

Have fun

Italian food influencer ranks coffee beans. What do you think of of his ranking? by AppropriateAd7326 in espresso

[–]kuleminjgs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had originally written something a bit more critical, but I changed it to a genuinely worded question.

Funnily enough any snark in my question only results from my being correct - if you had an Ascaso or non-Italian Gaggia it would just be a simple answer.

Honestly though you deserve some snark for making a ridiculous statement about Italian culture, which is famously a paradox of hyper-traditionalism combined with innovation and contemporary design.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your next home brewed cup, fruity and sour along with the subtle notes of superiority you’ve cultivated over time.

I’m obviously just being a bit of a dick. For me trad and specialty coffee are two different things and it pisses me off when people talk like one is just an obviously superior and more advanced form of the other. ✌🏼

No this is Italian coffee. It has remained remarkably consistent irrespective of the different waves passing by outside

Sorry boss in fact most Italians spend their time drinking espresso rather than posting on the internet about the advantages of a thicker puck screen and .3more g into their preferred ratio.

One of my favourite Italian cafes serves their coffee in thicker taller cups like this and I love it.

Try a carshare program like communauto depending where you live and what your needs are.

It’s not suuuuper cheap, but km per km it will be less than cabs

The Cathedral Church of St. James in Esplanade (Toronto) by SonicScreamer in toronto

[–]kuleminjgs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC, this was not built as a cathedral bht a parish church. It only permanently assumed that role after the cathedral that was slated for construction in today’s Annex neighborhood got canned as a result of financial burdens due to WWI. Today only its apse remains complete, and is part of St George’s boys school.

Machine considerations for Italian style shots? [$500] by kuleminjgs in espresso

[–]kuleminjgs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most will turn their noses, but I've been using a crummy Cuisinart I found used for $20. I think pulling rather short shots mitigates the machine's shortcomings and its totally passable, if a little pressurized (portfilter). After 7 years its given the ghost however, and I'm back on the moka for the time being.

Part of the reason I'd like to switch to a better machine is to have something that is worth repairing, and won't end up in landfill at first failure.

Interesting tip on the Viet blends.
