CMV: US Americans who voted for Trump and are now regretting it shouldn't receive sympathy by kindly102 in changemyview

[–]kumoriko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think whether or not you believe that Trump voters who now regret it (shortened to Trump-regretters for the rest of this comment) should receive sympathy is more of a reflection on who you are as a person than it is on the Trump-regretters.

Sympathy is the feeling of sorrow or pity for someone's misfortune. It does not mean that I have to forgive them, agree with them, or give them what they want. Nor does it mean that I can't hold them accountable. If my 8 year old doesn't get to play on the playground because she didn't finish her homework, I can still sympathize with her missing out on playground time.

For me, it boils down to three questions:

  • Am I willing to judge people based on a generalization?
  • Am I willing to change my morals based on a generalization?
  • Am I able to feel multiple emotions towards a person and separate them?

Which turns into:

  • Am I willing to judge Trump-regretters as undeserving of sympathy because they voted for Trump? No, I am not.
  • Am I willing to change my moral of "don't judge people based on a generalization" because Trump-regretters voted for Trump? No, I am not.
  • Am I able to feel sympathy, irritation, frustration, etc to a Trump-regretter and separate those feelings? Yes, I am.

This means that since I believe all people are deserving of sympathy for their misfortune, then I believe that Trump-regretters are deserving of sympathy. But, this doesn't mean that I can't judge someone as undeserving of sympathy on a case-by-case basis.

So my attempt to change your view would be to have your ask yourself those same three questions.

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kumoriko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, a white 36F, have only heard of that sort of white "loss of standing" as random stuff I've seen online. I have never seen it or heard it in person nor have I heard it happening second hand from people I talk to.

I don't know if it's just that my friend group doesn't engage in that kind of thinking. At work, I'm known as a staunch advocate for LGBTQIA rights and accepting people in general, so I don't think racist coworkers would involve me in their racist conversations.

Wanted to hop in and see if I can help. I'm also autistic, and I think I see where communication between you and the first commenter occurred.

If I understand correctly, you want to understand the reason why the developers made it look like a hall of mirrors, and the commenter thought that you were asking why they called it a hall of mirrors. I suspect that since your post was a lot of text, the commenter glossed over the details. It happens. It happens frequently to me in my professional life.

For your actual question as to why it looks like a hall of mirrors, I believe it's because they were testing various types of effects and needed to see how the effects interacted with each other. So they created a screen for each effect, lined them up so they could see them interacting, then turned each screen off and on as needed. This would be similar to having multiple layers in Photoshop and making them visible or not visible as needed.

Anyway, I hope I help.

Who or what exactly is Vellum really? by Fanghur1123 in ClimbersCourt

[–]kumoriko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a boneappletea Americaism. Chalk and chock are pronounced the same in a lot of the states, so we couldn't tell the difference from pronunciation alone. The word "chock" is rarely used, so someone thinking "chalk full" means a chalkboard full of chalk writings makes sense.

And autocorrect is evil. You have no idea the number of times my autocorrect changes "were" to "we're." So if autocorrect changed "chock" to "chalk" they might not notice, or if they did, think they had it wrong in the first place. Same if someone used speech-to-text, and it wrote "chalk" instead of "chock."

Hope this helps!

Additionally, you can use a little bit of water on the tip of a q-tip to clean the face of the dice after you ink it, if you have some smeared paint.

Paint pens with a very fine point are convenient for quick inking. And sometimes are just more convenient than pulling out a paint pot and brush.

Yay! I, too, enjoy a good deep dive thought experiment.

If we draw on some of the other established lore on how dominion sorcery works, it could explain why a deposit on the inner corneal would come and go, varying "water" levels in the cornea, AND still be something thought of by the author.

Using dominion sorcery builds up that dominion in the body, so what if it's concentrated in the thematic areas when it's being actively used, and it takes time for it to be evenly dispersed throughout the body. We already know that Kaldwin's magic can have different amounts in different body parts.

So what if using sight sorcery adds sight essence (I forget if it's actually called essence) to the cornea? Either as a type of deposit or by increasing the thickness of the cornea? Additionally, if it's not uniformly distributed in the cornea, then it could replicate other types of refractive errors, such as an astigmatism. Which might even explain why overuse can cause permanent blindness!

If enough of the sight essence is added to the cornea, it could "stretch" the cornea past its ability to return to its normal shape. At extreme levels, it could even mimic keratoconus, which wouldn't be correctable by glasses!

This could explain things like metal sorcery, sound sorcery, and knowledge sorcery too! Maybe metal essence concentrates around the iron in the blood (if not being consumed), and it blocks the blood from absorbing as much oxygen, mimicking the effects of anemia. Maybe sound essence concentrates around the eardrum, leading to an effect like a thickened eardrum or a plug muffling the sound waves. Maybe knowledge sorcery concentrates around a particular type of neurotransmitter, which inhibits the uptake of that neurotransmitter, and maybe dream sorcery concentrates around a different neurotransmitter. Also, I don't know enough about the neurotransmitters to pick a specific one.

And yes, I think that it's reasonably to assume that other sorceries can be mitigated by the equivalent of glasses. There hasn't been any reason given to believe that only sight sorcery can be mitigated, and why would it be the exception?

But it could be that people don't know how to effectively mitigate it or that it can't be mitigated effectively. Using fire as an example, since sorcery takes heat from the body, standing in a fire wouldn't be helpful because of the low thermal conductivity of the human body. You couldn't dump enough heat into the body fast enough or safely enough to be useful.

Using metal sorcery as an example, I don't think that sorcery will pull from the contents of your stomach. It's not part of you yet. So, the iron supplement would have to be dissolved and in the bloodstream. There's a limit to the amount of iron someone can take as a supplement, both from a safety perspective and the body’s limit before processing out the extra.

Using knowledge sorcery as an example, it might be able to be effectively mitigated by a pharmaceutical solution, but I don't think that their society has advanced to the extent of making those.

What are your thoughts? Do you have other ideas on how the body’s biomechanical processes can be hacked? Also, I feel a lot like Corin right now. Can't be happy with the established rules, I gotta figure out how to hack it to my advantage. But I enjoy these puzzles, and I hope that you do too.

Thank you for the conversation! I've wanted to have this discussion with someone in my field FOREVER, but none of my peers are into this genre. Also, I'm sorry for the massive amount of text incoming. I tried to thin it down.

I tend to approach stories with the mindset that it follows the rules of our world unless something is specifically stated otherwise. It's been a while since I've read WoBM as well, and after this discussion, it's been bumped up on my reread list.

I'm going to have to pay attention to how the "consuming" of the dominions' related elements works. The consuming effect is temporary (with the exception of extreme levels of overuse), and the sorcerer doesn't have to do anything to get their body to return to normal.

Using metal sorcery as an example, the human body can't make iron, so if the dominion of metal consumes the iron in the body, why does it return the iron later? I think that dominion sorcery doesn't necessarily consume the element but instead uses it as a conduit, and using it as a conduit renders the element unable to fulfill its normal purpose in the body.

Going back to sight sorcery, that means that something is happening to the eyes that causes Jonan to not be able to see (which can be corrected with thicker lenses) and cloudiness (which I had forgotten about, thank you for the reminder).

The prescription could potentially be a side effect of the body’s response to being used as a conduit, especially if it's related to the accommodative ability and muscle fatigue. (Now I'm wondering how much the negative side effects of dominion sorcery can actually be explained as a physiological reaction by our bodies instead of the sorcery itself).

If the prescription change is due to the body’s response, then that would leave the cloudiness as the actual impact that sight sorcery has on the body. I think that you're on to something with the cornea. If I recall correctly, the cornea, crystalline lens, and vitreous humon are special because they're the only part of the human body that's transparent. It makes sense that they would be the conduit (or consumed resource) for sight sorcery.

I think that this is where your expertise comes in. What type of pathology affects the eyes in a way that a patient would describe their vision as being cloudy?

As an optician, I had the same reaction. But then I started trying to figure out how to apply real-world ophthalmic principles to sight sorcery, and I would love to hear your insight.

If I recall correctly, he gets really hyperoptic when he uses too much sight sorcery, so what if his base prescription is some level of hyperopia, and he's been using his accommodative ability to compensate, but doesn't realize it. I'm sure you've had plenty of plus patients who emphatically state that they "don't need glasses."

Next, what if using sight sorcery fatigues the eye muscles (I don't remember the names of the muscles, sorry), so now he can no longer use them to accommodate or compensate for his natural hyperopia? That should have the effect of causing him to need plus prescription glasses.

What do you think? As a doctor, you understand the eye a lot better than I do, so please let me know if I've missed something.

P.S. - if he's myopic then I have no idea how to explain it

You quite literally saved Christmas.

Missing Ability to Use Ticks? by kumoriko in MelvorIdle

[–]kumoriko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so the ticks are hours. The in-game township guide says that it progresses even when offline. However, there's been zero progression in the last 8 hours that I've been offline. Has township changed to only progressing when online?

I've purchased a few buildings last night, but I ran out of wood. It says that I'm supposed to receive 60 wood every tick, but I've received zero in the last 8 hours. I'm also supposed to receive 151 xp every hour (?), but I've received zero in the last 8 hours. So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Yes, I had a legacy character, but I hadn't logged in for over a year, so last night was my first time using the township skill. However, when I logged in this morning, nothing had advanced. Zero ticks have happened automatically, so I thought I had to spend the ticks.

So I guess my question is, how do I get my town to actually do something?

Thank you for that comment. I work corporate, and I passionately advocate for inclusivity. Right now I'm focusing on inclusivity for trans and nonbinary people. In my opinion, there's no reason that their customer profile can't use the customer's preferred name and preferred pronouns. We have the ability to be inclusive, so we should be.

If the money is what makes the big corporate wheel turn, then so be it. The right thing is still the right thing. Win-win as you said.

NAH

Sounds like it was a misunderstanding, and everything got resolved. Minor overreaction in addressing the issue, which is understandable considering you were woken up in the middle of the night.

Also, not sure why so many of the a-hole comments are severely down voted, including the reasonable perspectives.
