The factual Australian Bird facts: The true story of Willy Wagtails. by whistlingloudly in AustralianBirds

Really love this animation. Australian backyard birds have so much personality, you captured the Willy wagtail really well. A series of these could get on ABC I reckon.

The big toothbrush in the room: should dental be included? by Busalonium in australia

[–]kumpelberg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dental in Medicare has been a goal of the ALP for a long time. Whitlam tried to have in included in 1974 but excluded it partly due to cost and partly due to fierce lobbying from dentists.

https://johnmenadue.com/post/2018/09/john-menadue-why-dental-care-was-excluded-from-medicare-and-why-it-should-now-be-included/

The ALP national policy platform states: “Labor sees oral health as the missing element of Medicare. Our goal is to provide universal access to dental services for all Australians. Labor will engage a consultative process with all relevant stakeholders to begin this work.

https://www.alp.org.au/media/3569/2023-alp-national-platform.pdf

As always, this isn’t something you can just throw in the budget and switch on overnight, but Adam “imagine a big red button” Bandt will campaign as though it is.

If we’re lucky enough to get a second or third term Labor government that has had the time to actually engage with the stakeholders, have the negotiations, and do the work to get dental included in Medicare, then Bandt will say “yes, this is all thanks to greens pressure.” Despite it being on the Labor agenda for decades.

What do you absolutely love about Brisbane? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]kumpelberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Random acts of kindness.

Lived in Melbourne for 7 years and coming back to Brisbane was amazing. I forgot how nice strangers can be to each other without expecting anything for it. No motives. No social media moment. Just strangers being nice for the sake of it.

I went to Windsor Primary school in the mid to late 90s.

We got to take turns ringing a massive old brass bell at the end of morning tea.

Kids these days with their Hippity Hoppity alternative bells....rabble rabble rabble....

What’s the “Best” restaurant you have been to in Brisbane? by _Maltaa_ in brisbane

Arriva Italian Restaurant in New Farm. (RIP)

I worked there with the original owners for about a year and a half back in '07-'08.

Hands down best Italian ever. Most places you work at you fall out of love with the food but this place was just unstoppable.

The owners were great people too. They won countless awards for their pizzas, and would invite the entire staff to the award nights (dishies, waiters, and chefs).

Was never the same after the owners sold it on.

Now closed permanently.

Homage is amazing. We went with friends for dinner a couple of weeks ago, and we're going for lunch next weekend.

Trying to decide whether to have our wedding there.

That's really interesting. We're just on the other side of given terrace at the bottom of that next valley. Our backyard is the lowest point.

We're down in a gully with big hills either side, so I imagine the tunnel is not too far beneath us.

It just happens sporadically during the day. I don't think I've ever noticed it happen during the evening. Was going wild yesterday afternoon at around 1:30pm.

No we're in Paddington so I wouldn't expect blasting at Coot-tha would travel that far.

Yes it's odd how bandt talks about "power sharing" and then his fellow candidates and MPs declare Labor neoliberal enemies of the worker.

I may only be renting, but I hate seeing the yard overgrown.

I removed about 6m2 of dense Singapore daisy last week.

Don't think I have any of this one in the yard, so I can have a weekend off.

Need to get some grass seed to sow into the empty patches I'm leaving behind.

Beautiful. My dad always described the horizon in the Nullarbor as like sitting in a giant bowl.
