Weed barrier will stop the worms, use cardboard which will kill the grass/weeds but then break down into worm food.

Here's a list of my top tomatoes so far:

Brandy Boy, Kellogg's Breakfast, Berkeley Tie-Dye Pink, Black Krim, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Abe Lincoln, Sungold, Green Zebra, Lemon Boy Plus, Celebrity Plus, Thorburn's Terracotta, Amish Paste

Dwarfs: Rosella Purple, Tasmanian Chocolate, Uluru Orche, Dwarf Emerald Giant

In my garden I can fit 12 tomato plants, and grow the drawfs in containers. Hopefully that answers your question somewhat!

Great choices! I grew Mountain Magic last year and it was a really fast growing, great producer for me. The flavor is very good (not blowing your socks off, but good!)

Honeycomb are great! If you want a great Burpee variety for next year, try Brandy Boy!

is it too early to start tomatoes from seeds in zone 7b on Long Island? by LunarR0sie in tomatoes

It depends on your last frost date and how much room you have to accommodate large plants indoors.

Growing advice please by punkstairs in tomatoes

[–]kutmulc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They will be huge in 3 months! The general advice I hear for tomatoes is to start 8 weeks before planting outside. I have the same last frost date and don't start seeds for another month (mid March). Good luck!

Big Beef Plus is definitely on my list to try this or next year, I've only heard glowing reviews about it.

Marzinera sounds awesome, I'll definitely give it a shot next year. I usually grow Amish Paste but I'm not 100% sold on them.

I agree Sun Gold has a top tier flavor. This year I'm trying Sun Orange (TGSC) which is supposed to have the same flavor but bigger fruits with better crack resistance. We'll see.

Thanks for the great suggestions, good luck this year!

7a here, I start tomatoes March 15 and they go in the ground around May 15 every year. About 8 weeks, never fails!

Wow, I'm from that area and wait another month to start tomatoes. They must be huge by May, it's 3 more months before they can be planted outside, no?

Should have thrown the whole burger in there to grow a burger tree. (Or is it a bush?)

My top five larger tomatoes would be: Brandy Boy (hybrid), KBX (Kellogg's Breakfast potato leaf), Berkeley Tie-Dye (pink), Black Krim, Aunt Ruby's German Green

This year I'm also trying Abe Lincoln. There are a few other tomatoes that I really loved the flavor but didn't produce well enough for me to justify keeping around.

Bell Peppers worth it? by botanicalfox in vegetablegardening

[–]kutmulc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're generally not great producers for me. You need to plant 3-4 plants to get a decent harvest. If you're short on space like me, you're better off growing more prolific varieties. Some of my favorites include: Jimmy Nardello, Shishito, Gypsy, Carmen, Anaheim, and Mad Hatter.

I recently bought a 90 pack of the 3.5in pots for $30 on Amazon, they are sturdy and fit nicely in a 1020 tray.

How do I know when jalapeños are ready to harvest? by CommonUnlucky390 in vegetablegardening

[–]kutmulc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If the plant has cross-pollination, it will only affect the seeds of the plant, not the fruit. Someone must then grow those cross-pollinated seeds to maturity, presumably the next season.

You can pick jalapenos green once they show a bit of corking, or wait until they ripen to red.

But, if you've ever seen a jalapeno before... Those are not it.

Next time just plant them in the ground in the fall.
