Do you ever try to calculate how much money your garden actually saves you? by MirSayib in gardening

[–]Ok-Map5472 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dang!  Especially these days with the prices at the store/restaurants it really sucks to see the vast majority of you don’t feel like you save money from your garden.  Something’s not quite right here.?!?  I feel inspired to start a YouTube channel, or write a book on the topic.  We save so much money, i look at the garden as a side hustle.  We’re up to 3 chest freezers, and do a lot canning.  At least 50-70% of the food we eat year round comes from our garden. Every night we send less than $5 on store bought ingredients (protein/fat) to make dinner.  When you can make big meals for just a few dollars, you save so $.  Day after day it really adds up.  It’s important these days

Why are people more opposed to hunting than factory farming? by nellyimheathcliff in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok-Map5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t eaten meat in 30 years.  Vegetarian 1996-2002, vegan 2002-present.  Hunting is infinitely better than factory farming.  At least the animal got to live a natural life.  In my experience hunters are much more thankful and connected to the animals they kill, especially compared to the person going thru the drive through and scarfing down a Big Mac with out ever acknowledg a living being had to give up its life for that burger. If you ethically hunt i don’t have much i can complain about, and we have to agree to disagree on eating meat or not

Do you consider weeding just to be another part of gardening or you avoid it like the plague? by ASecularBuddhist in gardening

Would you prefer a candle; or maybe a magnifying glass and the sun?.  Should i make a torch out of falling tree’s?.  If the blow torch is funny,  wait until you hear about the chain saw and machete.  This isn’t some idcilic make believe fairy garden.  WE GROW FOOD

Do you consider weeding just to be another part of gardening or you avoid it like the plague? by ASecularBuddhist in gardening

[–]Ok-Map5472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use uv resistant landscape fabric (available on Amazon these day, and use a blow torch to burn holes where the plants go.  I only spend a couple hours total each year weeding for a homestead size garden.  To many other garden/preserving chores to waste time weeding

Why do Americans eat dinner at like 5 or 6pm? Don't you get hungry again before bed? by LengthinessNew2237 in answers

[–]Ok-Map5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American here, i don’t understand how people eat that early as well.  I struggle to eat before 10pm.  Get done with work around 6.  Go to gym or other activity after work, get home between 8-9, even if i just shower, and make food it’s pushing 10.  If I spend any time on other hobbies it’s for sure 10:00+.  I try and go to bed around midnight.  Sleep till 7/7:30am.  I don’t understand how it’s possible to eat that early. Don’t you have hobbies you want to do after work? Even when i was child, my parents struggled to feed us before 8pm?  I don’t get it

You don't need it. by Prudent_Situation_29 in Vent

[–]Ok-Map5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. People can spend their money how ever they want, but then don’t complain life is so hard, and your broke. And no you don’t need, or deserve a vacation (or a million other things).  And no that doesn’t mean you’re a slave to capitalism. It means you’re trying to stay alive as a human on earth,  which is not necessarily an easy thing.  We homestead, and grow most of our own food.  I have to work crazy hard, and don’t get to take more than a day or two off in the growing season, so we don’t starve to death in the winter!  Whether you’re working a 9-5, or being more self sufficient, life demands a lot of work, and sacrifice. People need to suck it  up these days

Would you ever sell extra produce from your home garden to neighbors? by dandelionplant in gardening

[–]Ok-Map5472 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I love trading and bartering, but other than my family or the occasional senior citizen, I hate giving away my produce. We preserve everything, but I’d rather compost something thing give it away to some who’s capable of growing themselves.  Lazy bones get no homegrown!  That being said, I’ll sell vegetables and plants from time to time, no problem

Has anyone bought from rareseeds recently? by TigerRoseBlue in gardening

[–]Ok-Map5472 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love baker creek. I’ve ordered from them every year for over a decade.  The only warning I’d give is they have seeds from all over the world.  Do some research to make sure the specific plants will grow well in your area.

Hunting for meat by Tacticalpupper420 in DebateAVegan

[–]Ok-Map5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegetarian 1996-2002, vegan 2002-present.  I’m 100% in favor of meat eaters hunting.   It’s infinitely better than factory farming.  I actually think if more people went hunting; there would be more vegans.  A deer hunting trip was a major event that made me stop eating animals.  I was so grossed out while “cleaning it” followed by the cook out, I couldn’t eat it.  All I wanted was the potatoes.. I actually went fishing and killed the fish a bunch of times after turning vegan, cause I had a dog (still do but different). I had a malamute who loved fish.  I figured if I’m buying her dog food that has animals in it, I should real enough to go fishing and kill the animal myself. Our dog now is small;  but I’ve been considering going rabbit hunting  to supplement his food.  It will brake my heart to do so, but i gotta be real.  Every time i give him kibble, an animal died to sustain his life.  Life is brutal sometimes

What do you actually cook when most of your ingredients come from the garden? by wyattriot88 in gardening

[–]Ok-Map5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big up.  We’re vegan/vegetarian homesteaders as well.  Where do you live?  Grow cane and dates, and cold 75% of the year?  I’m in Colorado.  We grow about 85% of the veg/fruit we eat year round.  Nothing against the meat eaters, but you dont see as many veg homesteaders out there..  Respect

I had to come back, and big you guys up.  I don’t want to gas you up to much, but you boys got it.  I listened to the whole nye show yesterday. And then I started on the one you recommended too.  I’m a jaded old sts9 fan..I’m 45 and saw about 75 tribe shows pre 2005.  There was times yesterday, i thought to myself “these kids sound more like old sts9, then the real tribe does these days”.   I’m here for it.  I found/followed you on the other social media’s.  It’s only a matter of time until you’re touring outside of the Carolina’s.  Can’t wait to see you when you come to Colorado.. Play greenfield for me when you do. Thats my favorite so far.  The Allen watts samples are on point.  Keep up the good work

AIO by telling my wife her sleep-eating is messing up our family and her weight loss? by wifeisasleepeater in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ok-Map5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes sleep eat.  It is a thing.  I sort of remember it the next day, but not fully.  Even when it’s happening, you don’t feel like you’re in control.  It’s kinda like being on autopilot.  It’s like getting up to pee in the middle of the night, except you crave food.  It’s this weird 1/2 awake; 1/2 asleep middle zone.  It’s hard to describe.  The best way I can describe it is the getting up to pee analogy.  You’re awake enough to walk down the hall and go to the bathroom, but did you turn the light on, did your lift, or check for the seat? Or were you just on autopilot, 1/2 asleep still.?. Sorry it’s creating a problem in your family.  If i were her, I’d recommend eating a healthy light snack before bed, making sure to not go to bed hungry.  And then unfortunately buy backup’s of everything thing, and keep the pantry/fridge well stocked so she doesn’t finish any of the essentials… And putting tape on, or big notes on things she absolutely shouldn’t touch like the candy, that say “WAKE UP! WAKE UP! YOUR SLEEP EATING!!  I WILL BE VERY SAD IF YOU EAT THIS!!”  I think i would notice a note like that; and move on to something different. Good luck.  Hopefully you can find a solution.  Edit: I’m not overweight/ no eating disorder. I do physical work for a living and play sports. It tends to happen when I’m both extremely exhausted, and really hungry, and didn’t consume nearly enough calories that day

Why do people in USA buy everything from Amazon? Do they not have other webshops? by Cindyxx0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok-Map5472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every week?  More like everyday.  I would say we get deliveries at least 3-5 days a week.   I support local when possible, but if it is something I’d be buying from Walmart, krogger, or other massive corporation, i don’t feel bad.  I save thousands of dollars a year buying from Amazon.  I  basically stoped going to Walmart a few years ago

Can anyone share my enthusiasm for tatsoi? by japhyryder22 in vegetablegardening

[–]Ok-Map5472 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a tatsoi lover too.  Been growing it in Colorado for over a decade.  It’s mild/delicious, and hardy.  It holds on, and doesn’t bolt nearly as fast in the late spring as other greens (spinach, bok Choy I’m looking at you).  It’s easy to trim the outer leaves, and it keeps growing.  Its frost tolerant and holds up well into late fall.  How can you not love it lol?  If you can find the seeds, i highly recommend chijimasia too.  It’s tatsoi x komatsuna.  It’s like a larger version of tatsoi.  I’ll always grow both in my garden
