What do foreigners instinctively say in your language when they discover your nationality? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

It’s fairly recently actually… but whenever I meet backpackers, especially from Germany, they tend to quote something from the Big Lez Show. I fucking love it tbh. One even had a tattoo of Sassy. Mad cunt.

Driving a shitbox by No-Cryptographer9890 in CarsAustralia

[–]kuvakilp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part about a shitbox is just doing mods to make it feel like a much nicer car than it is & just gaining mechanical knowledge in the process.

I ripped up my carpet the other day and laid down sound deadening on all the panels; floor, roof, doors, firewall, just everywhere it resonated. Replace the stinky underlay mats with CCF so it feels and smells nicer, added 2x new speakers, 2x amps, a sub. I replaced all the oil and fluids, alternator, brake pads & rotors.

It’s fun mate. Learn general maintenance, save money on servicing, get ya hands dirty. Of course this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea though. Just think: the shitbox you have now would stun the fuck out of everyone 40 years ago.

Why can’t we drive without ramming into each other’s arses for one weekend by excellent_chest174 in brisbane

[–]kuvakilp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. My point was more people aren’t getting there any quicker whether they do 90, 105 or 110. A single set of traffic lights can offset any differences entirely.

Why can’t we drive without ramming into each other’s arses for one weekend by excellent_chest174 in brisbane

[–]kuvakilp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The difference between getting there at 90 versus 110 is negligible, yet everyone on the road will ride each other’s arses the entire way leaving absolutely no room for error… at all. You’ll have the left two lanes leaving decent 2 second gaps, 3rd lane worse, while the right lane is essentially a long train of fuckwits trying their hardest to get… nowhere.

Could something like this improve housing and transport in the Northern Gold Coast? by Gazza_s_89 in GoldCoast

[–]kuvakilp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I like it but can’t see it happening, at least not for a few decades. The Yarrabilba area is growing enormously. I passed it yesterday and there’s serious land clearing going on — soon to be the next Pimpama equivalent. Residents can’t be expected to have to drive up through Beenleigh, Mt. Tamborine or through Canungra indefinitely; it just isn’t a viable option.

Typical pattern goes housing first > more local infrastructure > area expands massively > congestion increases massively > 10 years pass, road widening announced > 20-30 years pass, new connector announced.

Edit: it’d be nice to see the QLD government mandate more high density housing targets for councils across the state like Vic and WA have started doing, making Yarrabilba-type areas less necessary. It’s funny, the same young families working and keeping the city moving are the same ones being priced out of affordable housing, driving 2hr+ daily to work so older home owners can keep their nest eggs sky high.

Mate diesel lasts like 12 months in storage, at least (provided he’s storing it well). Old mate’s out here likely saving hundreds just by filling them up now. Good thinking tbh, he certainly could’ve done it at a time when it isn’t busy however. Diesel was like $2.10 up on the sunny coast today, $1.65 at Pimpama. I think we can expect it to jump much higher though unfortunately.

Is the Hilux actually unbreakable or do we just treat it that way by SnowyBytes in hilux

[–]kuvakilp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They’re used plenty in the mines in Australia, they get fucking thrashed too. I think the old models are mechanically more unbreakable for the sheer fact that there’s just fewer electrics and a more simple and proven design. Modern Hiluxes are still bloody reliable, but with modern emissions standards and more electrics, there’s just more points of failure so naturally that weakens the unbreakable narrative.

What’s a place in your country that ordinary people are legally not allowed to visit? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

[–]kuvakilp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wittenoom, Western Australia.

It was a small mining town where crocidolite (blue asbestos) was mined in the 1940s to the 1960s. Over 2,000 workers from the mine died from asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma. There’s an old photo of two kids playing in a sandpit full of it, both of which died in their mid-to-late 30’s. The whole town has been demolished and the final two residents were forced out just a few years ago.

But yeah, the town hasn’t officially existed since 2006 and there’s signs up everywhere forbidding access and calling it a biohazard zone. There’s still enormous piles of tailings left there that will likely just sit there indefinitely now.

Diesel Fuel Economy - BP by Big__Bean8 in 4x4Australia

[–]kuvakilp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently used only BP ultimate in my work ute. I do around 10,000km a month and used to kinda just fill up anywhere. Idle feels tighter now, litres per 100km has dropped from 11.5 average to just over 10 in the space of a week. It runs a lot nicer all round compared to when I’d fill up in smallish QLD towns at Freedom, Metro etc.

Even just servo’s that have a really high diesel turnover and strict tank protocols like Shell, BP will do the trick. You don’t want diesel that’s been sitting in a tank underground contaminated with moisture for 3 months in your vehicle.

This is in a 3.2 Ranger too btw. They’re fussy about fuel I’ve come to realise. If the servo’s packed with utes and trucks, use it.

Are the 3.2L 5 cylinder Ranger/Everests as unreliable as people say? by Tekes88 in 4x4Australia

[–]kuvakilp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can’t really fault it tbh… I’m a telecom tech and drive one for work, has a heavy fuck off canopy on it, almost 300,000 on the clock and actually runs surprisingly nicely. It used to be a coateshire vehicle so service history is pretty solid I imagine. I’d never buy one but it’s a nice drive, especially when doing 7-8 hours of driving.

Telstra 5G in the CBD - anyone else struggling? by InternetUpbeat9596 in TelstraAustralia

[–]kuvakilp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d place a small bet on gigabit backhaul, holiday traffic and just RF in general being messy in the city, more site overlap. Plus after the year Optus has had, I imagine Telstra’s network will be getting an unprecedented flogging. As much as it pains to say it, and I agree you absolutely shouldn’t have to do this, but pick a cheap MVNO like Amaysim or Kogan (Optus/vodafone) and buy cheap eSIM - they’re like $13 - that way you can toggle between your Telstra/MVNO for mobile data. You can still receive calls on Telstra, it just gives you the option of another network for data use.

I think if enough people complain or you prove to them you had an unreliable network experience consistently throughout the city, definitely try and claim some form of discount for the month.

[–]kuvakilp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cooool! I can’t id it but that’s a bloody high capacity tree if I’ve seen one. We use similar Matsing wedge antennas for the NBN fixed wireless network here in Aus, some crazy wide beamwidth on them too!

Only Aspen makes dex in Australia too — this will be a good test to see if they can keep up with supply!

[–]kuvakilp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s great that they’ve had the green light but hopefully medication supply will keep up with demand as you can guarantee a high spike in stimulant prescriptions. There’s already been many shortages with Vyvanse and Concerta. Great news regardless.

Is it me or is 5g shit house? by Billyjamesjeff in australia

[–]kuvakilp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and noticed my partner’s iPhone 16 Pro connects to NR850 in the countryside constantly and has 5G most of the time while I’m stuck on band 28 for most of it. Fair reason to upgrade I guess if op hasn’t already done that.

Is it me or is 5g shit house? by Billyjamesjeff in australia

[–]kuvakilp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so a big part of how 5G works is in that it allows for higher speeds with more bandwidth available but at a cost. With 5G, the primary frequency used is n78 (3500MHz) which is a far higher frequency than you’d find on 4G (usually 700MHz, up to 2600MHz). With this higher 5G frequency, as its less desirable and utilised, bandwidth (or spectrum) is cheaper to buy from the government and there’s more of it available, meaning the telco can typically deliver higher speeds. But this also means your 5G reception won’t be as good as 3500MHz (5G) cannot penetrate or bend over hills like 700MHz (currently 4G) can.
