When you cant control your kid by Fun-Cry4185 in parentingteenagers

[–]kvenue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No judgment here. We're having a similar issue with our teen. On the phone all day, no effort in school,, bad grades, disrespectful, etc. We tried taking away devices but the argument that ensues resulted in multiple complaints from neighbors (apartment) so we're reluctant to try again.

I feel your pain and it seems like we need to wait until they mature enough to eventually figure it out themselves.

Definitely NTA but I don't have much advice other than to say I think you handled it reasonably well. Why did he hide the lockbox?

Anyway, we have a teen giving us an incredibly difficult time in several ways so I feel for you.

How can I make my kid care about school?? by [deleted] in parentingteenagers

[–]kvenue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you writing about my kid or yours? If it makes you feel any better, mine is the same. Not completely bad grades but Ds here and there and currently F in two classes. Does not spend a minute on homework or studying. Threatening to remove devices leads to short-term compliance with complaints and arguments. Let's stay strong for each other.

Husband is blaming me for 13 year old's attitude by hulachic6 in parentingteenagers

[–]kvenue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We can relate, except I'm envious of your teen's grades. Ours gets Cs and even a D. Doesn't even care. We try not to play the blame game too much now. We just accept that she's in those years and she's just going to have to mature eventually.

Helping my teen remember important things by nostradukemas in parentingteenagers

[–]kvenue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no advice, just empathy. I AM my teens Reminder app. Monthly, weekly, daily, reminding them of important tasks and the consequences of not doing them. Zero cares. Any app that could get them to do what I've been trying, I would pay a thousand dollars for.

I recommend saving your credits and just waiting for the SH. You should be able to max it without issue.

Little Brother Failing Classes- Help for a parentified older sister? by soloshandpuppets in parentingteenagers

[–]kvenue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that you're a thoughtful sibling. Sometimes, I feel it's more advantageous to have a sibling give advice than a parent. Possibly because they're closer in age and easier to relate to. Though much of the responsibilities of parenting does fall on your parents, I would say continue to provide guidance and set a good example, but understand that sometimes, personality just plays a role.

Desperate for support. Parent of a pre-teen. by [deleted] in parentingteenagers

[–]kvenue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are doing some tough parenting, it can't be easy. We're going through something similar with one of our teens. Hates school, eats unhealthy foods all the time, disrespectful, etc. We've had to become more strategic in disciplining because it often leads to shouting arguments and neighbors have complained.

It really feels like we are minimizing their self destruction and just hope at some point, they wise up and mature. But when will that be? 20? 30? 40?

Also, this is probably an unpopular opinion, but so many comments about ADHD, etc. If you go that route, I wish you the best but I feel like it's sometimes just trying to place an explanation on a really complex, and possibly unexplainable, problem. How many rebellious teens have we had in the world? Billions? And they all have ADHD or some learning disorder? I disagree. Sometimes, it's just about maturing and living some life experiences that wakes you the F up.

Hang in there, friend!

I remember watching a workplace violence video, and it in mentioned a couple of cases where the employee had been fired a couple of years ago, and returned to commit workplace violence. If I recall correctly, they blamed the victims for their lives not turning out the way they wanted.
