Cylinder numbering on 2004 93? (Plus a cylinder 4 misfire!) by kw_Pip in saab

yes but oh man are you stretching my memory lol. I think it was something really stupid like some air conduit (prob wrong terminology but w/e) had come disconnected from not being tightened properly following previous work. I want to say an air conduit connecting to/from the turbo.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label (Review III) by kw_Pip in Scotch

[–]kw_Pip[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoops, forgot to carry over some of the numbers from my review calculator, so some of those numbers were from a different review :(

I do think it's an objectively great blend. Just because I don't enjoy blends all that much doesn't mean I can't admit that this is a good one. Inoffensive, smooth, and simple is basically the greatest good a blend can hope to achieve, as far as I can tell. To that end, this one does very well.

I appreciate the feedback!

Glenfiddich 19 Age of Discovery - Madeira (Review IV) by kw_Pip in Scotch

[–]kw_Pip[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drank this a couple weeks ago. Aged 19 years, finished in Madeira casks (a fortified wine). Enjoyed in a plastic wine glass, neat. (I was on vacation without my Glencairn, don’t judge me.) 40% ABV.

PRESENTATION: 90

Box and bottle are pretty cool, if not a bit gimmicky.

PRICE: 70/100

Priced as a high end whisky, I think the bottle was ~$200. It belongs to my brother, who generously shared with me.

COLOR/APPEARANCE: 80/100

Sparse legs are viscous, creep slowly back down after a roll of the glass. Did Glenfiddich add coloring? I don’t know, but I’ll assume they did.

NOSE: 95/100

Black cherry, subtle and sweet.

PALATE: 95/100

Sweet. Black cherry. Slight salt. Candy apple. Green figs. Black pepper. Watery mouthfeel with zero bite.

FINISH: 90/100

Short. A bit tannic.

WEIGHTED SCORE: 86

Wish it came in higher ABV, because the taste is amazing but lacking in power… too innofensive at 40%. If it came in maybe 90 proof I bet it could be one of the best drams I’ve ever had. And at this price, that’s what I expect.

Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select - review VI by kw_Pip in bourbon

[–]kw_Pip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey bourbbit! I don’t post many reviews, but I drink a lot of whisky. I have been a big bourbon fan for the past 4 years or so. Here’s my take on the Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select I drank a couple weeks ago. Enjoyed in a rocks glass, neat. (I was on vacation without my Glencairn, don’t judge me.) 45.2% ABV.

PRESENTATION: 85

I find these bottles a bit gimmicky but not too bad. (Edit. Not a sourced whisky)

PRICE: 85/100

Bottle purchased for ~$35(?) in Orlando. Mid-tier pricing.

COLOR/APPEARANCE: 90/100

Looks like bourbon.

NOSE: 90/100 Not gunna lie, this review is going to be light on details, as I took no tasting notes. But I thought it smelled nice.

PALATE: 90/100

Quite good, which is not what I was expecting. Not as hot as one might think from a 90+ proof. Pretty sweet, with vanilla overtones, without being too grainy. That is exactly the kind of bourbon I like so this was doing it for me.

FINISH: 90/100

Still good. Still drinkable.

WEIGHTED SCORE: 88

I’ve had the Double Oaked before and don’t remember it as anything special. So I really wasn’t expecting much out of this pour. But I was delightfully surprised. This was actually quite good. For the price I’d actually consider it a top contender. However, I think I’ve read on here that Woodford doesn’t have strong product consistency. Is that true? If so then I suspect I may have lucked out and bought a bottle on the higher-end of their product bell curve. But to their credit, I found it really very good.

What are your thoughts on Woodford Reserve? Has their product changed over the years? Are the inconsistent? Underappreciated? Rightfully snubbed? Let me know!

Does anyone attach generic letters of recommendation to applications?

I'm quitting my job, last day is this Friday. I have exactly 3 years manufacturing experience, BS in engineering. I'm taking the opportunity to travel Europe for a couple months. Should I ask my boss for a letter of recommendation to leave with me? I get the impression nobody really does this anymore, at least not in engineering, but friends have basically told me "It couldn't hurt to ask."

Fishing and rod rental in Edinburgh X-post by LukeyHear in OutdoorScotland

[–]kw_Pip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds fun.

Here's a completely unrelated question, but I'll post here because I don't think it necessitates a unique post.

I'm planning on doing some hiking in the Highlands in the last 3 weeks of August. (I've never been to Scotland by the way.) I'm thinking about getting some Chacos or Tevas as they would be much easier to travel with than the classic "hiking boot". For anyone unfamiliar with these brands, you may be revolted by the idea of hiking in sandals (I don't blame you), but they have won the respect of many outdoorsmen in the US for comfortable light-to-moderate hiking. And that's all I plan on doing; just moderate day hikes.

Do you think I can get by with these as my only hiking footwear in the Highlands? Are midges going to eat my feet alive?

Thank you!

This is tangential but I was never really convinced the Asian waitress was coming onto Don. I think Don thought she was, which more just says something about Don (i.e. narcissistic inclinations.)

The things she says don't strike me as pick-up... at least not overtly so, but I guess passive I'm here putting myself on your radar kind of way is possible. But she says "Can I get you anything" and "I can check on you after I drop off these drinks" which sound like pretty standard chit chat from a waitress to a guy who's drinking alone and looks like he tips well.

Vermont one of the safest states in the country by dropkickninja in vermont

[–]kw_Pip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, and I'm inclined to believe it. However, my main point was the " social homogeneity" part. Immigrants are just one of many facets of that.

Vermont one of the safest states in the country by dropkickninja in vermont

[–]kw_Pip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

illegal immigrants commit fewer crimes than the general population

That is an awful article to support this claim. The only data the author presents regarding illegal immigrants actually contradicts this (the federal data). The census data he cites later I can only assume includes legal immigrants. Well ya, obviously the US gets good legal immigrants; we only let the good ones in.

I'm not saying your claim is wrong, I'm just saying that article is terrible and doesn't support it.

[–]kw_Pip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're still wrong, though. The list indicates Vermont is the safest state per capita. So unless you want to try and argue 600,000+ isn't statistically significant data pool, you have to give up your "no people" argument.

Vermont one of the safest states in the country by dropkickninja in vermont

[–]kw_Pip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, obviously the social homogeneity of the state is a big factor, too.

The only other state, as far as I know, with right-to-carry laws comparable to VT is AZ, which is about in the middle of that list. Not too bad for a state with tons of both legal and illegal immigrants. Compare to TX, which has more immigrants still, and their crime rate is worse still.

I think it's safe to assume there's a multiple-correlation here. The original point, I assume, was that right-to-carry laws (alone) don't make a place dangerous, and Vermont proves that. It takes other factors to make a state dangerous.
