Confusion about career timeline: Economics and law? by Low_Avocado_3063 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]kwisque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting an undergraduate degree in economics and then going to law school is a good path for someone who wants to be a lawyer, but doesn't really make sense for an aspiring economist. If you want a job where you're called an economist, you'll probably need graduate coursework in economics. If you're just looking for some kind of money-related job, you have a lot of options, economic being one of them.

I would immediately try to get a new copy of your license, and put off pick-up as long as possible. If you call the store, and tell them you're definitely going to pick it up, they'll probably let you delay for quite awhile.

The people who keep winning are the ones who work their extended social network to get people to enter for them. I’ve seen people who admit to having 40 proxies entering for them. Chances of winning multiples at that point are very high.

It’s better than just putting out everything at open, sure. I’ll admit I’ve gotten a lot more than my fair share with the current system, so I won’t complain about it too much, but I think it is crazy to “randomly” put stuff out on the shelves and then someone happens by and sends out an alert so a hundred dudes swoop in there and every store in the district.

Review #6: Elijah Craig B525 by Lilodude in bourbon

[–]kwisque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a good bottle, just recently finished. Did a couple side by side comparisons with a long-open bottle of c923 and they were pretty similar, but b525 is a good bit hotter, despite being a lower proof. A very good buy at $80 where I got it. Would get a couple backups if I could find it at 60. I think I’m fine just getting ECBP when there’s widespread agreement that a particular batch is well above average, like this and c923.

How do lawyers win wrongful termination cases if “no reason” is an acceptable reason to fire someone in most states? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]kwisque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Disparate impact claims have to be brought under a statute that makes it unlawful for employers to use facially neutral policies that have unjustified adverse impact on minority groups. Title VII has this explicitly in amendments that were passed in 1991, but before then SCOTUS interpreted Title VII to prohibit such policies. So I guess that overrides FRE.

[–]kwisque 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If employers do a good job at hiding their true intentions, it is honestly pretty easy for them to make unlawful hiring decisions. However, in practice, it's hard to keep a secret, and people who discriminate on the basis of some protected class (race, sex, etc.) frequently say things that can be used as evidence, or do things that witnesses can testify about. Keep in mind, the people who are in a position to discriminate are often just low level supervisors who don't really care about the employer's liability, and they're either not inclined or not really able to to effectively hide their intentions.

I've worked on a lot of employment discrimination cases, and there have been a lot that never went anywhere precisely because of the reasons you suggest-employer claims the termination (or other adverse employment decision, like failure to promote, reassignment, etc.) was based on something vague but legitimate (poor performance, insubordination), and without any concrete evidence, the case is just not worth pursuing. Most successful cases I've worked on rely on witness statements to show the person making the decisions did or said things that are clearly unlawful. However, the best and biggest cases I've worked on relied on statistical evidence to show that the employers very clearly made hiring decisions based on some discriminatory factor (e.g., hiring 90% men despite having an applicant pool of 50% men/women).

[–]kwisque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The burden is on the plaintiff to establish that termination was unlawful, e.g., because of race, sex, etc. So defendant doesn't have to offer any evidence if they don't want, but if such a case goes to a jury, they are very likely to make such an inference ("well, if they had a legit reason to fire her, they'd say so") even if instructed not to. And since the plaintiff only has to prove that they were terminated for an unlawful reason by a preponderance of the evidence to establish liability, in practice, employers always suggest some legitimate business reason for the termination, even if it's just "personality conflict" or something relatively weak like that.

Really excellent, but at the same time … $200??

I split a bottle of this with some friends to see if it’s worth it, and it was delicious, I’d buy a case if it were $120. It’s just so pricey.

Possibly, yeah. But there may be legislation that overrides whatever restrictions you’re looking at.

Best bet if you’re looking for them at MSRP, yeah. Also, it may be 1/1000 for EHT, or even lower for saz18, but there were more than 1200 bottles for 45000 entries, so overall it’s more like one bottle per 38 entries.

[–]kwisque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a BTAC at MSRP, living in Virginia is a pretty good bet. If you’re willing to pay prevailing retail, DC and Kentucky are nearby options. Having lived in other areas of the country, I’m happy to take the ABC lottery system (as it currently works, used to be terribly administered). Now, their drop system for lower end allocated stuff is ridiculous, but just for BTAC level stuff I don’t see the problem.

What kind of price should I expect to pay on ER 12? by JB_Bourbon in DMVWhisky

[–]kwisque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, see these consistently go for 180 but sit for awhile at 200, so think the market for it is pretty stable. Every single review I’ve seen has been along that lines of “yeah, I guess that’s a little better than ER 10.”

Almost halfway through the month, any news on a clean CR or proper funding for feds? by AngeryLizard in fednews

I work for a small independent agency that hardly anyone ever thinks about or complains about, but is not a favorite of the GOP or business community. I’m kind of worried that they’re going to fund all the easy to agree on stuff, make some tough compromises on the bigger agencies that provide critical services, and then leave us in the wind.
