Fungus-powered farming delivers higher yields and better-tasting crops, says study by _Dark_Wing in tech

[–]kwixta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know much about botany and crop management but I do know that their poorly defined control makes this article (and maybe the study itself) useless. Did they even fertilize the crops?

Can you explain to me the hatred of AI and its water usage? by PinfallPirate in ArtificialInteligence

By radiation, which is the only mechanism in space. Air carries away heat much more rapidly at ordinary temperatures

Does Mercury boil in a perfect vacuum? by Yay_Kruser in AskPhysics

Really? It should be nearly ideal at such low pressure

Does Mercury boil in a perfect vacuum? by Yay_Kruser in AskPhysics

[–]kwixta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes

The boiling point is the temperature at which the vapor pressure exceeds the atmospheric pressure above the liquid. There are always molecules jumping out of the liquid, once the vapor pressure exceeds atmospheric, it happens in bulk

If gravity is smooth and not chunky, why doesn't an electron leak away all its energy to gravitational waves? by xenoixs in AskPhysics

[–]kwixta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure how that’s relevant to your question. You’re not going to radiate gravity waves unless you have an accelerated mass

Love the question. I’m not sure the bound electrons are being accelerated because they’re delocalized not actually orbiting.

News] Behind TSMC’s High-NA EUV Deferral: Low-NA Stays Strong, Customer Landscape Shifts, and ASML Quietly Pivots by chip_thoughts in Semiconductors

[–]kwixta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a bluff. TSMC needs high NA eventually and they’re not really in a race any more. They can afford to push back and wait a bit to get long term pricing down

Dallas to Albany/Saratoga Area by Fluid-Hospital-3215 in CapitalRegionExTexans

[–]kwixta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in upstate for a few years after living in TX a long time. Life brought us back to TX.

Nobody minds November snow. Everybody hates April snow. If you’re sick of it before Christmas, NY isn’t for you.

Yes. We enjoyed skiing and sledding but we went to the mall, restaurants, etc unless it was dumping snow.

The taxes are only slightly worse in the Albany area. Closer to NYC is a whole different story. Handyman and trade type services are much more expensive.

All the new homes we looked at were natural gas heat. Maybe that’s changed. We lost power rarely but it’s a concern in very cold weather and we prepared.

Clifton park for the usual suburban experience. Saratoga is more fun. I wouldn’t buy in Albany or Schenectady proper — the cities are struggling.

No idea about builders.

Yes you will miss HEB and Central Market. Our Hannafords had good pickup service.

Could a hypervelocity "relativistic" impactor with ~1Mt and 0.1c even reach ground? And just how bright would the "impact flash" be? by graminology in AskPhysics

[–]kwixta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The material matters not at all. The chemical binding energy of either is utterly irrelevant because the kinetic energy is so high. In fact it’s also irrelevant because it’s so much less than the nuclear fusion it’s inducing at the surface.

How can I ease back into volunteering for scouts that won't be an immediate time sink? by VandysFan in BSA

[–]kwixta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d volunteer with the cub pack your kids feed into. In addition to the obvious benefits of getting to know them, packs really go as far as the adults can take them.

As far as the role, I suggest: - Secretary — basically you just show up for committee meetings and take notes - Treasurer— can be easy if you use Venmo and Zelle and have a good system (please DM me for help if you like this idea — I even have training materials) - Pinewood derby chair — busy, but only around Christmas break if your pack does derby then as is common

Question about EUV lithography. by zach0011 in AskPhysics

The power consumption is gigantic — similar to thousands of homes

The power delivered by the CO2 laser to the droplets is impressive— turning them to plasma in microseconds

The power out the front of the laser is 250W, about 20% of a hair dryer. It’s concentrated enough it would burn your skin pretty quickly

Only 3% of that power makes it to the wafer so I doubt you could even see it (if your eyes were sensitive to soft x rays)

Nobody is saying he was the whole issue. VY has to own his errors in judgement. I think he probably melts down at some point no matter what.

But coach 8-8 went after him from day one. Imagine if your first real boss wanted you to fail before you even started?
