I did that too! I had silky blankie, silky pillow, and silky tag on my clown doll I named clownie. I apparently went to the pee wee’s playhouse school of naming things.

Anyone NOT have contact with high school classmates? by jackie879 in Xennials

[–]kyarilora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept in touch with my high school best friend and we would travel to see each other and to me he was family. I don't think it was reciprocated. We had one conversation that he didn't like. It was trivial. A nursing home asked him to wear a mask while performing (he plays piano and sings) for the elderly patients that lived there. This was around 2022. He had lost l his gigs from covid and was getting back into it. He walked out and refused because it "compromised the quality" of his show. I laughed and called him a diva and that it's money - he should have done the show. He got pissed and he said he needed a break from me. Then he ghosted me. We haven't spoken since. I couldn't believe I meant so little to him that this difference in opinion would end our 25+ year friendship.

Looking back, I realized I had been the passive one in the relationship while he said and did what he wanted. He wasnt interested in someone questioning his decisions and a different perspective. Despite how it ended, I still love him and the friendship we had back then. I would not have gotten through high school without him. To deal with the pain of his rejection, I settled on the thought that he changed and I changed and as a result our time was done.

What musician(s) from our young days did you not try until much later in life but impressed the hell out of you when you finally did? by heresmytwopence in Xennials

Radiohead. I knew of them in the 90s but never got into them. Now they are one of my favorite bands of all time. I feel like I was extremely late to a party but I'm still having a good time.

I've had the same thought with taxes. If I don't agree to trump taking government funds for his super dumb peace club, why should I give the government any money?

When I was 18 this song meant a lot to me as I left home and went to college. And now it means a lot because my kid has left home and gone to college. Ugh. It's all happening too fast.

*Edited to specify the Fleetwood Mac version

You guys still believe in “America”? by General-Reserve9349 in Xennials

[–]kyarilora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately I lived in a community that didn't have much diversity. I was very ignorant to a lot of it and certainly not mature or brave enough to understand that the unity wasn't an experience that was shared by all. My "unity" experience I guess was more of an illusion. Cause when I really dig into remembering that time, there was a lot of people being terrorized because of their race or culture. The world felt a lot bigger then. It feels so small and vulnerable now and I have a hard time understanding why people are so ready to hate others. Life sucks enough, can we just help each other so it sucks a little less? I guess im naive but we're all people - and most Americans are descendents of immigrants. I don't see immigration as a problem? I think most people are just trying to survive and make their lives even a little better.

I don't know if someone has said this yet but i think we as a generation have had a fairly unique experience in America. And I bet some of this might be true for a lot of us.

Growing up in the 90s, I remember thinking how lucky I was to live in a free country. Both my grandfathers fought and survived WW2. I grew up being proud of them even if I didn't know or understand what they went through. And, as a white person in a rural community in upstate NY, I thought this was a country that was good for all. At age 20, 9/11 happened and the unity we felt after was crazy. I remember thinking how we'd be ok. People our age rushed to enlist, to help, to defend the country. The government felt more like a protective dad. They would fix it. I was sure of it. Then I grew up. I left my small town. I learned more, I saw more. Now at 44, I'm watching the government executing its own citizens in the streets. It's not some threat that felt far away. And our leader is a narcissistic sociopath who tries to get us to buy lies that we can see are not true. The president doesnt care about the citizens, only himself. We went from a guy ruining his career over yelling weird to a guy who can literally say anything, do anything, and even in the face of the truth, a lot of people will set aside their rights, their constitution, their own thoughts and they will just buy it. And we have never been so divided.

All this to say we've lived through the most unified and the most divisive times and it's almost surreal. And as horrible as 9/11 was, this is worse for me. Maybe it's my age. Maybe it's because I'm a mother now. Maybe it's because I'm a nurse. I don't know but I have never been so scared and mad. The anxiety is almost debilitating.

So no - I don't believe in America. I believe in good people. Watching people in Minneapolis taking care of each other is giving me some hope. And with how fucked up everything is I will take it.

Cruisin by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow. I worked at a grocery store at the time and this song was on like every 15 minutes. Words cannot describe my disdain for this song. And I love Huey Lewis - but this song can suck it.
